The Devil We Know - A Supplement for Curse of Strahd & Descent into Avernus

Written by Lady Fiona Wachter, The Devil We Know is her personal manifesto on devils, their worship, and the benefits of serving an infernal master.

This supplement is designed to be a handout DMs can provide to their players in Curse of Strahd. The handout is lore-friendly and intended to match the kind of information Lady Wachter would have access to, including information on devil types and the various Lords of the Nine Hells.

For any DMs looking to connect Curse of Strahd with Descent into Avernus, The Devil We Know is also designed to serve as a tie between those two campaigns. Lady Wachter's manifesto works great as an overview of many types of devils and introduces the dangerous powers that rule the Nine Hells. All devil lore here is aligned with the lore available in the Monster Manual, the Dungeon Master's Guide, Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, and Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus. (Note that all of this lore has been filtered through Lady Wachter's perspective, so your players may discover she was wrong!)

The supplement includes a manuscript version and a print-friendly version (use size A5 when printing for best results).

Layout and design by the talented Maria LaRocca.

Wonderful, flavourful, and well written/illustrated suppliment. 5/5 starts. My only note would be that it is not often going to be apppreciable to the story unless the players choose to investigate Lady Wachter and steal her manifesto on their own ac [...]

An impressive addition to Curse of Strahd. Vallaki is an interesting part of the campaign, but as-written it can be overwhelming. This module includes an impressive but manageable amount of content, perfect for adding a few extra days where events can [...]

The Devil We Know adds to an already rich lore surrounding CoS. With plenty of adventures in DM's guild, it's refreshing to have a document dedicated to world-building. Whether or not you decide to add devils to Barovia or include the summoni [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
