OUTCLASSED: The NPC Statblock Compendium

This 300+ page book was written to alleviate the agony of creating a completely new character for enemies with class levels simply because there aren't many NPC statblocks available in the officially published books. Before now, if you wanted your party to fight a righteous paladin, your options were basically a knight (MM) or a blackguard (VGM). Now you have thirteen new options! For example. There are dozens of barbarians, bards, clerics, druids, fighters, monks, paladins, rangers, rogues, sorcerers, warlocks, wizards, and even some non-traditional classes like artificer, blood hunter, and rouge, not to mention dozens of smaller disconnected statblocks for NPCs that fit a specific purpose outside of a class identity.

Included in this book:

  • 150+ NPC statblocks incorporating subclasses from the Player's Handbook, the Dungeon Master's Guide, the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, and Unearthed Arcana subclasses (including artificer), plus homebrew class material like the Blood Hunter and two custom classes I designed myself, the Long Ranger and the Rouge (that's not a typo). Not to mention a whole heap of miscellaneous statblocks that don't quite fit into a class archetype, featuring magic initiates like the Spell Sniper and Siege Mage and customisable companions like the Squire and Outlaw.
  • 12 flavourful write-ups on how to incorporate the DnD classes as factions into your game. Each faction write-up describes demographics, key features, strategic and tactical suggestions, extra statblocks for Big Bad Evil Genius-level threats, and a fully-formed example of such a faction, like the shadowy Lovelace family, the Orimorts Academy of Illusion, and the clerical mission of Helm's Holy Vigilance Against Evil.
  • Guides for quickly applying race and class to a statblock.
  • Many indices sorted by class, CR, thematic similarity, and sourcebook.
  • Clarifications and examples of the thought process behind building NPCs.
  • Bonus material and variant rules as easter eggs peppered throughout.
  • Flavourful blurbs of action for each statblock.
  • "Quick Features" to apply the flavour of any subclass to any statblock.
  • Quick racial features to apply to any statblock.
  • Quick class features to apply to any statblock.
  • Battlemaster maneuvers you can apply to any statblock.
  • Full spell lists for eight types of wizards you can apply to any statblock.
  • A lot of secrets. Browse around and tell me what you find!

The community has adapted the statblocks found in this book to be used in the Foundry VTT. Jack Porter's instructions: "It should be pre-packaged as a compendium, so once it's [downloaded] just put in the compendium 'packs' folder it should be ready to use, just drag and drop into the game." Got a quick question regarding sources referenced. In the file, there are quite a number of (DAPC) builds, but nothing citing what that stands for. Was wondering the source name.

That's the Dark Arts Player's Companion! You can see the list of homebrew material referenced on pages 7-8. The (DAPC) tag on each relevant page is also itself a link that should take you to the Dark Arts Players Companion!

This is fantastic! Over 300 pages of prerolled NPCs of almost every imaginable type. Such a time saver and bargain even at the full asking price.

So I love this product BUT, I actually can't figure out the Foundry thing. Is it possible the instructions have changed since the v. 10 release of Foundry? Or the db in a pack folder isn't read that way anymore?

The Foundry material wasn't made by me and isn't an official part of OUTCLASSED, so unfortunately I don't have an answer to your question. Sorry!

Hello. I'm interested in purchasing this and wanted to ask if the compendium pack is compatible with Foundry v.10. Thanks.

All the board postings I read tell me the VTT compendium doesn't work. Please tell me I didn't spend $10 for nothing.

Hi Mike, the VTT material is something made for free by a fan of the book. It's accessible through the github link in the description on this page. It isn't an official part of OUTCLASSED.

Great compendium, love just how many options there are! 1 issue I noticed though is that the foundry compendium link seems to be dead/not working. Other than that, everything has been great so far!

Loving this compendium! I wanted to add some of these NPCs to my FoundryVTT world, but the link given here isn't working (I think DMG stopped allowing certain outside links). Is there another way I can get the link (I tried searching around but no luck)? Thanks

Did you actually have a look at the Rouge section?

Scroll up a bit and check out some of the other DnD supplements I've published. Let me know if any seem to jump out at you, like any starting with an R specifically! ;)

I can't help but think how amazing this would be for Fantasy Grounds. I can't seem to find a version of it for FG. Would that be something you would be interested in?

I love it, made my life easier but i have a 1 complain: not sure what causes this but i find it impossible to copy and paste 1:1 text from any stat block.
for example if i try to copy innate spellcasting description from some sorcerer NPC:
"Innate Spellcasting.Thesorcerer'sspellcas" <- this is exactly what i get after copying full 8 lines of text from statblock. I've tried to open PDF in Acrobat Reader and few different browsers - still the same issue.

That's a fair issue! I've considered including a text-only version with this in mind, in fact. The PDF is generated with GMBinder so there's not much I can do about that specifically, but a text document with the full text of all features and abilities might help. Keep an eye out for that at some point in the future.

This might not be feasible depending on your setup - I primarily use OneNote and Google Docs for my campaign, I use the windows snipping tool to clip statblocks and paste them directly into my notes.

Question! I may have missed this in an update, but do you have a document that includes some of the classes fron Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, such as the Echo Knight, Chronurgy Wizard and Graviturgy Wizard?

Unfortunately, I haven't added anything from Explorer's Guide to Wildemount. I have, however, added all the subclasses from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything! You can find them in the expansion here: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/336429/OUTCLASSED-Tashas-Panopticon-of-Nemeses

Very useful indeed. I recommend creating a version up on Roll20, I think that would sell like hot cakes.

I had been using the free GM binder version of this for a couple years and it was great. While I don't per se mind paying for the use now that its on the DM's guild. I do mind paying for it and it being harder to use than it used to. Not having the PDF indexed is kind of a bummer. Happy to support the creator but hopefully we can get a fix down the line? I used to just link to the page I needed in my session notes. Otherwise I have no big issues with the document.

Unfortunately the links broke with an update with GMBinder so I was forced to remove them. I really liked the links!

If I can solve the issue, they will return. In the meantime, every page is noted in the index.

Check out the new features of the latest edition (changelog on the back page).

Good question! The August update added in flavour text for (almost) all the statblocks, rearranged a few areas, corrected the page references in the index, and added a few more statblocks including a king/queen and a higher-levelled Way of the Four Elements monk.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
