The Soulknife, 5e Class

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $0.00

Harness the power of pure thought into a blade in this new class for 5e, the Soulknife.

With the ability to create a mind blade, a weapon made of psionic energy, you gain abilities that make it stronger and grow with you, as well as the ability to augment your blade and attacks by expending psi points, a feature similar to the monk's ki points and the sorcerer's sorcery points.

Choose between three different archetypes: the Blade Focus, the Psicaster, and the Warknife. The Blade Focus grows their mind blade itself to be stronger, augmenting it with various traits. The Psicaster wields both psionics and arcane magic together. The Warknife trains their own body to and martial prowess to empower themselves.

This is a class that has flavors and influences from multiple classes (fighter, monk, sorcerer, etc.) and feels like a nice psionic mix of both.

A slight critique, for Balance purposes the Mind Blade should only deal 1 damage type, it also should not grant a free cantrip. Furthermore I would tone the damage down to match the Monk Martial Arts damage. Maybe allow the expenditure of Psi points to grant Weapon Traits like Versatile, Finesse, Light, ect. to allow for a more varied build type. For the Psicaster I feel having the abilities be closer to the Eldritch Knight pf the Fighter be a little more balanced for example the Armed Caster ability you gave it is relatively useless as the Mind Blade does not grant Two Weapon Fighting and Spellcasting only requires 1 free hand to for casting a spell, as noted in the PHB the same hand can do both the Somatic Component and the Material Component of spellcasting. However as the Mind Blade doesn't say you can't be disarmed the Eldritch Knight's Weapon Bond would grant you the bonus of not being disarmed, the summoning part is a bit of a mute point as the Mind Blade can already be summoned. Or you can instead move...See more

Shouldn't the MINDBlade have Concentration to justify it's Short Rest Recovery? the PSI-Blade acts more like meta-magic of Empowerment of Blade/Spell. the Sorcerer Points takes a LONG rest to Recover; Balancing it's POWERed Attacks.

Can the MIND Blade have a (Finesse) Quality?

Really nice class but can you update this it could use some more specification on almost everything such as what skill do I use for my mind blade what sort of actions do you use for psi powers?

I think that more information needs to be given for using the mind blade as a ranged weapon. Things such as if it consumes ammunition, and if it does not, would it still have special rules like 'loading' for crossbows.
Is the weapon considered identical to what it is based off (except for the dmg) or does it just look like your chosen weapon.

This looks pretty interesting. For your saving throws I might suggest a change. The rest of the core classes follow a theory of one strong and one weak saving throw. The strong ones are typically considered Dex, Con, and Wis while Str, Cha, and Int are weaker. This is mostly just a frequency of saves of those types kind of thing. You picked Str and Int for your soulknife, might I suggest changing str to dex or con.

This is definitely interesting, though I feel there are a number of problems with the class still. For instance, you make reference to a few things that aren't involved in 5e, such as the hardness of your weapon (which isn't normally important, since there are no core sundering rules. The Warlock's weapon that it summons doesn't have hardness for example). You make a mention of "bonus to your blade" but I'm not even sure what that would be in reference to. Overall there feels like there are too many choices. The fighting style and augmentations have some overlaps, and some of the abilities you can use your psi points on are either too costly or too low, as well as have a lot of things that basically do the same thing.

I'm posting this rather late, so this isn't well formatted and I can't get too in-depth, but I definitely feel this needs more work. It might be that this doesn't really fit as its own class, as well, but rather a subclass to a psychic class for 5e, whenever that might come...See more

Hardness/hp is something that is covered OFTEN, but it is covered in 5e (I believe a few magic items have it, and it is covered later in the DMG under...something, as well).

"Bonus to your blade" is a reference to the mind blade. I figured that would be obvious since the class is focused on it, but I suppose specifying "mind blade" would help.

Psi point cost is something I have been toying with. I'm currently playing a Blade Focus soulknife in a campaign as a playtest, and so far it hasn't felt too overpowered or underpowered, even with the assistance of magic items.

Hardness does not actually exist in 5e. Items can have AC and HP if the DM wants to use those rules. Hardness is a 3.5 rule that reduces damage to an object by the amount listed. Nothing like that exists for items in 5e. 5e items can have damage resistances, but these simply cut damage in half. Very large objects like castle walls can have damage thresholds, but something small like a blade would not. If I were you I would remove the hardness from the Mind Blade's entry. If you want to come up with an appropriate HP range and AC for the object and put it as a side note that would be fine, but hardness is non existent in 5e.

I guess some home brew might want to include Durability of the Blade and Could the MINDBlade be formed into a shield? and then Breaks and needs a bonus action to respawn the shield? Shouldn't the MINDBlade have Concentration to justify it's Short Rest Recovery?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
