Bone China Isle

Even experienced adventurers deserve the occasional vacation, and our latest offering provides a setting just for that. Bone China Isle is a tropical island, known for feasts, welcoming locals, and, most of all, its magical pottery, made, in part, from the ashes of the deceased. These unique dishes are ingrained in the local culture, and are symbolically used for religious ceremonies, as well as feasts and trading – a wise chieftain may end up as a ceremonial bowl in the temple, whereas an annoying hatemonger might become the ashtray in the local tavern.

The island can be a place of peaceful relaxation and a hunting ground for rare souvenirs, though adventurers would best be careful if they step in the jungle, lest they be hunted themselves by snakes, bats and flesh-eating parrots!

We think of Bone China Isle as a flexible setting – it can be included in the Saltmarsh and Tomb of Annihilation campaigns, or in any other setting that seeks to use nautical themes, island hopping and sea travel. This island brochure includes the following:

  • A detailed setting of an island village and its culture, accompanied by our usual hand-drawn illustrations.
  • Seven adventure hooks for your players, including several questlines that lead them to the island, and adventures within it.
  • A “Bone China Table”, featuring 12 different items of pottery – some can be obtained as a curiosity, while others come with their own minor magical power.
  • A list of 10 random encounters, useable on any island/tropical setting.
  • A terrifying, magnificent monster – the Carnivorous Parrot!

Thank you for checking us out! If you’re interested in our work, here are some other settings we have made:

A more temperate Saltmarsh setting, with rivalry of local fishing fleets:

An unusual community of craftsmen, in the more sheltered location of Skullport:

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
