Potions 11

From award-winning screenwriter Dale Zawada

Potions 11 is a 4-5 hour one-shot adventure for five 4th-5th level characters. The adventurers will be tasked with planning and executing a magical heist. Will they be sneaky or use brute force? Probably a violent mix of the two. This adventure is perfect for DMs looking to fill a shorter session or injecting some light humor after an intense end-of-the-world campaign.

Adventure Summary
The party is hired to put an evil potion seller out of business by robbing him blind in a heist that will go down in Neverwinter history. The players will break into the mage’s shop, steal as many potions as possible, and clear out the enchanted chest deep in the basement where the mage hides 11 of his most valuable and dangerous potions. Of course this evil mage is a bit paranoid and has many traps and surprises for any group of thieves silly enough to attempt such an endeavor.

Thanks for a fantastically written one-shot. I add it into my a campaign for level 2's and changed the cloaker, and hell hounds in to younglings. Rugo's as written definitely still needs to be nerfed, with high damage spells, drinking a potion every round, and spawning skeleton guard makes the battle far to much like fighting a tank. I also believe Rugo's reason for blood draining could be a lot deeper.

Thanks for this fantastic module! :) I'll be running it with my players tonight. I made a new map of the potion shop for the encounter and wanted to share in case anyone else could use it. I tried to be true to the text, but I now notice two details are off: the tapestry is red, not black, and the stockroom has four aisles, not three. I also added lots of potion reagents and herbalist ingredients alongside the potion stock for visual interest. It's under the size limit for Roll20 and scales well for that use; use the cell width 256px. Hope someone else can get use out of this too. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hBmkaaCsjSGW6bOqIsGgrCNx8aD48Fc3/view?usp=sharing

This was such a great adventure! I am new at being the DM but it is laid out so well. I had very little time to prepare too so it made my job much easier. I only had three people run through so I buffed a few things here and there. I also tied in a few extra things on the side to make for a few more scenarios. Everyone loved it. I am excited to to the next part!

What suggestions do you have to get past the lightning runestone, if the party doesn't roll high enough to identify it (so the don't get help from the npc) and no one in the party can do lightning damage?

I just picked this up and plan to run it this weekend. It looks like lots of fun and I’m looking forward to it..

I’m confused about a couple of NPC’s/monsters. Karl is listed as a CR 5 NPC but his stats seemed to put him around 1/2. What was your intention?

Also the Stone Statue list hit dice as 8d4 +24, this is the first time I’ve seen d4 used as hit dice for a monster. Again I’m wondering if this was your intention. The monster is listed at a CR7. The closest monster in the SRD I can find at CR7 is a Shield Guardian and it has way more hit points and a lot more offensive capabilities.

The next monster choice that is perplexing me is the cloaker. You didn’t get stats on it but the SRD lists it as a CR8.

So I’m trying to figure out the CR ratings here. Did you intend for a CR 5 Karl, followed by a CR 7 Statue, followed by CR 8 Cloaker monster? Or was it CR 1/2 Karl, CR 3 Statue, followed by a CR 8 Cloaker?

I just noticed the same... the CR values on these stat blocks are way off.

For 4 Lv 5 characters:
Karl - CR 5 -> Easy
Statue - CR 7 -> Medium
Cloaker - CR 8 -> Hard
Hell Hould - CR3 x3 -> Hard
Rugo - CR6 -> Medium

For a party of level 4s, the CR5 is Hard and everything else is deadly.

For a party of 5s, it seems like sticking to the listed CRs might work out okay. The stat blocks as-is are super easy for the first two fights, but are appropriate after, so it probably doesn't affect much.

My players are only half-way through, but we all love the theme of this adventure -- it's so easy to follow, edit and add more to, we are excited to finish and it's given me loads of great ideas on where to go next. Thank you & well done!

Thank you, this has saved me from a surprise cancellation. Instead of payment (because I'm broke), I redid the monsters for you, with appropriate stats for the CR... I sort of shifted them for my setting but I can change them after I'm done if you'd like:

I'm planning on running this adventure this weekend for my YouTube channel One-Shot Onslaught! After reading through it I think my players will have a lot of fun with it. Keep an eye out for it at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpdi5TWPc154FaS42XkkR1_5Q4w9iTEKF (if we run it this weekend it may be up around 8-8-2017)

Ran the adventure this weekend as our group's 1st one shot and loved it! Looking forward to more from you.

Quick question, was the stone statue supposed to only have 5 health? Even with high AC it felt like it would go down in one spell. I might have let the party fight him a bit until I felt like it was enough ;)

That was an error that unfortunately made it through that version of Potion 11 but great DM call adjusting that on the fly!

I made the stone statue turn into a Flesh Golem with the Stone to flesh potion the elf gave the team. That had a bunch more hp.

Also after the team took out Rugo, they wanted to go fight the headmaster. So I made her the even bigger big bad, an Oni. There is a poem you can read the players right from the MM about Oni. They have a whole thing about them being the monster kids are afraid of, and going with the poison the orphans theme I thought it worked well.

Nice adventure!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
