"When a stranger comes to your house at night and knocks, there is a peculiar muffled sound about the knocking by which you can tell that the visitor is a kitsune - if you have experienced ears. For a kitsune knocks at doors with its tail. If you open, then you will see a man, or perhaps a beautiful girl, who will talk to you only in fragments of words, but nevertheless in such a way that you can perfectly well understand."

Delighting in all sorts of trickery, mischief, and general nosiness, those who know of the kitsune regard them as annoying, but usually harmless in their intentions. Most kitsune are fascinated with the adventurers they meet, often joining them in their travels to try and satisfy their inquisitive nature. Because of this spirit of curiosity they are wonderfully suited to the adventuring life.

The kitsune player race has been designed to fit in a typical adventuring party in any setting, so you'll have no trouble fitting in your pre-existing adventures. The document contains:

Background information on alignment, adventuring, society, shapeshifting, and naming.
Unique racial traits including kitsune magic and true fox form.
Fox statistics to use as a normal beast and for the kitsune true form.

What strength, dexterity, and con scores is it intended I use while in fox/true form, the ones in the fox stat block or the same ones I would be using in human(ish) form?

It functions the same as wildshape, so you would use the ones in the fox stat block.

I really like the look of this race. I've already made two characters with it! Though I do have a question. Since this race's true form is that of a fox, what happens when I fall unconscious at 0 hit points? Do I revert to fox form? Or do I stay in human form?

What happens when you drop to 0 hitpoints is addressed under True Form: "If you are reduced to 0 hitpoints while in your fox form you remain in that form."

I've purchased this, and done some comparisons to my own version of the Kitsune race. It's definitely much more simple than mine and seems a fair bit more balanced as just a single race. However, after doing research, which I see you have done and commend you for, I think using subraces more would actually be better for what the Kitsune is and how lore speaks of them. Kitsune have 3 main distinctions: Tenko, Ninko, and Nogitsune, and I've basically given the base race one ASI, Fox Form, base Fox Magic, their Star Ball, and a brief description of their tails and what happens as they level. And depending on their subrace, they have a special Sight ability that grants them a boost in certain situations and a certain expansion of their Fox Magic based on their nature, along with another ASI. If anything, I at least think your DEX and CHA ASI you have set up should be switched since they have lived 100 years as a fox before anything.

You're right that putting in more subraces would likely be more accurate as far as distinguishing the different types of kitsune. The main reason for doing one race was simplicity's sake. I'd love to see what you've done with your own race.

Excellent version of the kitsune. I've collected several versions, but this is the most solid. Like everyone, I made a few "tweaks" for my own purposes. I flipped Dancing Lights into Minor Illusion, but that's my personal interpretation of the folktales. It's by far the best version of the race I've seen.

Thanks! Minor Illusion almost made it in as their cantrip since that's also a very kitsune-like spell, but I thought that Dancing Lights was more thematic and Minor Illusion is a common spell taken from casting classes. Minor Illusion definitely works great as an their racial cantrip though. I probably would have included it as well but I didn't want to break the racial spellcasting formula.

This is a good balanced build. What i like to see if fox form can be upgraded with the character level as requirements. Such as the natural damage increase or the ability to cast spells. I would add those as a sub race where the Inari-Kitsunes can cast magic normal in fox form. The Nogitsune are more feral and have increases in natural AC and damage. Sort of how a dragonborn has a breath attack that increases as it level. I can create the write ups for the subraces for you to flesh out this race a bit more.

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. I thought about putting out some sub-races for them, but decided on one base race for simplicity. I may expand it out later and would love to hear your interpretations. I also considered making it a feat. For now though, you could probably make a Nogitsune monk if you want to do natural attacks in fox form or use sorcerer metamagic for casting in kitsune form.

The race is quite good on a quick glance. I'd think a fox would be small in size instead of tiny though.

It is indeed very close, but I ended up going with a tiny size because while red foxes can break 2.5ft in length if they go over the average (not counting the tail), in all other aspects their profile usually fits into the tiny category. If you wanted to go with a different subspecies of fox then they generally get smaller than that too. You're definitely free to houserule it to a small size if you feel that makes more sense in your game, however!
