{WH} The Witch, a character class of natural arcana and the old ways of magic

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $5.00

Long ago when the world was young, magic was the domain of gods and shadows, utterly unknown to mortals.

In these forgotten times, a bargain was struck between mortals and these antediluvian entities. Thus, the first inklings of magic were imparted, and the survival of the mortal races ensured against the primordial forces that ravaged these ancient times.

You are a follower of this grand and ancient tradition, harkening back to a time when the natural and the arcane were treated as one. You are a Witch: feared, revered, and never, ever to be trifled with.

The Witch is a full character class with progression from levels 1-20, seven distinct Coven subclasses, 12 new spells, and 10 jinx options to characterize how strange and wild your magic can be.

Play as a natural illusionist, crafting figments and strange curses from moonlight, or as a sage healer, acting as a balm for mortal toil. Conjure demons and treat with devils as a practitioner of forbidden magics, or lay unbreakable dark curses and bind mortal souls into scarecrow minions. Craft potions from your spellcraft and combine them into powerful elixirs, or animate a witch’s cottage on chicken legs to bring your home along with you.

Whatever your ideals may be, forge your own destiny as a witch, and woe betide any who would presume to cross you.

Hello again! I hope you are alright!
Just wanted to let you know that I have completed the French translation of your document and almost done with my own layout for it.
If you are interested in making it public, please reach me! :)

I love this class tremendously. Whenever I try to compare it to Wizard or Warlock to my party, I struggle because it's just so perfectly *Witch-y*. The class is balanced overall, with the spell list picking from Wizard's utility, Warlock's weirder damaging spells, and a touch of Druid's natural vibes, but it's Witch first- by default a Witch has access to Polymorph and Reincarnate but not Revivify, which is assume is because that theming of changing people's forms comes first. More importantly, it has an excellently picked spread of subclasses that round all the possible 'vibes' of witchery that one would use the class for. I've been using the subclass in a seafaring campaign, playing a sea-elven Coven of the Eclipse witch who learned magic by taking secretary jobs for magic clubs and organizations and copying their stuff. It's the creepy, devil-dealing subclass that eventually rewards an fiendish hag form, and has been perfect for playing off a sly and creeper actual *witch* between combat, social, and a bit...See more

Hi! I have been using your witch class for a while now and the teenagers in my D&D high school club love it too!
I would like to work on a translation to French language (We are a french speaking school and not all students speak english well enough to use your class). Would it be ok with you? Is there a way I can contact you privately about this? Thank you very much :)

Are there any plans to update the class to Tasha's? Also you may want to remove featherfall as an option on the Imbue Spells table as as soon as you drank the potion the spell would end, and you cant drink a potion as a reaction.

Quick question regarding the Sanguine Rain subclass feature for the Coven of the Eclipse; how long does this last as it doesn't state a duration (based on it granting half cover for a time to those within + some of their allies... I'm assuming a minute at most?). Otherwise I really like this class in general and wouldn't mind seeing this get an update in the future :)

Kind Regards
James

A while ago you mentioned plans to update the Witch to include options added by Tasha's and fix the fact that many of the bonus spells grant spells that are already on the Witch spell list, has there been some complication with doing or or have you simply been busy with other stuff?

I love this Witch class. Do you think it would work if I replaced Intelligence as its spellcasting stat with Charisma? I don't use Warlocks in my campaign, and I picture this class more as bargaining for their powers than learning them.

Don't see why not. Go for it!

My initial version of this had the player choose whether the class cast with Wisdom or Intelligence, so I don't see using Charisma instead as being a bad thing.

Thanks for asking!

Nothing too exciting, IIRC. Mostly just fixes for textual errors, that sort of thing.

I've been wanting to play this for a while, and I'm finally making a Witch character in a Curse of Strahd campaign I'm starting in a few days. The coven of the Gibbous Moon is thematically perfect for that campaign, I'm flavoring the character's divinatory powers as her discovering how to use the Gift she inherited from her Vistani mother and flavoring the Psychopomp feature to be the familiar being twisted by Barovia's dark energies.

Also, I noticed something I think is an oversight. The coven spells are supposed to give spells that aren't normally accessible to Witches, right? Well Augury, which is one of the Coven of the Gibbous Moon spells, is already on the Witch spell list. I'm guessing it was there there in an pre-Gibbous Moon draft and you forgot to remove it?

Oh, Scrying is also on both the Witch Spell list and the Gibbous Moon coven's bonus spells. And Teleportation Circle and See Invisibility are on both the Witch Spell List and the Lost Moon coven's bonus spells. I don't notice any other repeating spells for the other coven bonus spell lists.

I've used this class myself and it's truly fantastic. Marvelous stuff. Loving it for years, now.

Teeny thing; Small typo on Brewcraft's features. It's says 'ff you craft a magic item', and I believe that's meant to say 'if'.

Just made one!

It's not perfect, necessarily, but it'll definitely probably get the job done.

So, I have a sci-fantasy themed setting, and as such, am looking to make 'technology-themed' subclasses for various D&D classes. I'm looking to make one for this class, I'm thinking "Coven of the Satellite" for its name (but unsure). What features might you suggest?
What I might do is make it largely a reskinned Dark Moon Witch, but with the necromancy replaced or reflavored as technomagic. For example, making warforged soldiers instead of scarecrows.

Spitballing here, I'd go with "Coven of the Dawning Moon", and plunder my Technomancy supplement for spell ideas.

Construct familiars, features that focus on manipulating mechanical objects magically, and a pew pew raygun arcane focus would all be solid ideas.

Two questions. First, Cackle is shown as having a range of 15 feet but it doesn't say anything about radius or targets. Is it 15 foot sphere/cube around my character? Is it a cone in front of my character? What exactly is the range centered on?

Second, out of pure curiosity, how were spells chosen for the class? Obviously there are some obvious ones, like Find Familiar, but I'm curious what process had to be gone through to figure out what you thought worked. For example, I don't see Shatter on the list, even though it is rather commonly learned by other full casters.

First: Thanks for pointing out Cackle needed clarification! The intent is that it's a 15 foot radius sphere centered on you. I'll amend that in the text.

Second: The witch is, primarily, a controlling caster, which is its main point of differentiation as far as its spell list goes. The witch has extreme variety, pulling unique spells from both the druid and the wizard, but misses out on many iconic damage spells that are available to most other casters. This helps solidify that a witch's "job" is the classic 4e controller role: shape the battlefield to favor you and yours, and make existence especially hard for those up against you.

There are a few damage spells that the witch gets, but they need to be especially thematically fitting, such that their exclusion would hamper the class.

There's a small oversight where the Witch’s Moving Stronghold sidebar next to the Animate Hut spell still refers to the spell as a Jinx.

I had bought this class a bit ago and just now have noticed the update. I'm LOVING the new way this class works, though I saw one problem. In the Contents, in the Additional Spells there's a spell called "Evil Eye". However that spell isn't anywhere on the pdf. Was is a cut ability that wasn't removed from the contents or?

Ah, that's a typo!

The spell "Glyph of Misfortune" was originally called "Evil Eye," but I changed the name as it conflicted with a different spell I created earlier in a separate supplement. Apparently the change didn't take in the table of contents.

I'll be uploading a newer version later today that fixes that text. Thanks for letting me know!

I’m not sure how the Grande Olde Witch Capstone works. Is this supposed to be 1/day feature? Or do you get to use your jinx feature freely each time you roll initiative? Anybody know?

Hi! I *may* have/probably did just answer your question on Twitter, but I'll post my answer here, for if anyone else is wondering:

Grande Olde Witch comes into play every single time initiative is rolled, without cooldown, and lasts for one minute. During this time, you can use your Jinx feature without expending any of its uses, as often as you'd like, essentially guaranteeing unlimited use of Jinx in combat.

It's very powerful, but I tried to make it comparable to other strong 20th level capstones that remove limits a class has dealt with throughout its progression.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
