St. Andral's Orphanage

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Suggested Price $0.00

Welcome to the orphanage. This module was designed to be inserted into the main Curse of Strahd campaign, in the centralized town of Vallaki. However, it is entirely possible to run St. Andral's Orphanage as a stand alone adventure or incorporate it into another campaign.

This chapter provides Vallaki with some additional pacing before the events of St. Andral's Feast and the Festival of the Blazing Sun. By moving Milivoj, the gravedigger, to a separate location, players have more time and incentive to explore and interact with Vallaki's various plot hooks and NPCs.

Additionally, St. Andral's Orphanage provides the following:

  • A plot hook to the Werewolf Den
  • A potential introduction for players on the Demiplanes of Dread
  • Additional story pacing for the Bones of St. Andral quest
  • An appropriate location to leave the rescued children from Old Bonegrinder
  • An expanded use for Milivoj the Gravedigger

In this adventure, players search for Milivoj at the orphanage, only to discover he is incapacitated by an unexplained illness. As players look for a cause and a cure, they will also find the shrewd headmistress, Ms. Belasco, and evidence of abuse among the orphans.

However, as they investigate, players will soon find that things are not what they seem and that the orphanage's true evil lies with a possessed child named Felix.

This adventure was originally created and posted on Reddit under the r/CurseofStrahd subreddit for a series entitled, "Fleshing Out Curse of Strahd." The Fleshing Out series attempts to add depth to various NPCs, streamline confusing plot lines, fill in plot holes, and alleviate some of the stress associated with TPK inducing encounters in the CoS campaign. Find the original posts and my other work under my Reddit username, u/MandyMod.

I would personally like to thank both my editors, u/DragnaCarta and u/Ziopliukas, and the entirety of my followers on the subreddit for your ongoing support and feedback. I love you guys from the bottom of my heart.

Great addition to Valaki.
*Spoilers*
I used this when my party of 6th level came back to Valaki after being away for a while. It made for a fun mystery to solve with some good roleplay oppertunitys as well. My players really got into it. I buffed Felix's demon a fair bit and added some shadows to the encounter as well, made it pretty challenging but a lot of fun for both the players to fight and for me to run. 100% would reccomend using the orphanage in your campaign!!!

This was an absolute blast to run.
Spoilers:
My players are in truth still in the middle of it but they had their combat and it was a tense fight. I had 6 level 5 players who hit hard so I tripled the demon's HP and gave him two attacks on top of the ability to jump bodies at will (Wis DC 18).

Made for a good time and added a lot of flavour to Vallaki. This is a must for any CoS campaign!!

Hello, @MandyMod!
My name is Francisco Ferreira, I'm a freelance translator from Brazil.
I'm working on portuguese versions of "FREE" and "PAY WHAT YOU WANT" material from DMs Guild, and I really appreciate your content.
I would like to make your content available in portuguese, and I want to know if you are in agreement with that.
DMs Guild do allow translations from contents of their publishings, but I think is important to ask for the author's permission.
Thanks in advance!

this surprised me by being SO fun to run!! The encounter was actually really interesting and challenging for my Level 4 party (took the demon up to max HP) - they had tons of fun trying to work out whether they could destroy the locket and how to convince the demon to move on to possess someone else.

The one thing is to bear in mind CWs before running this for your players, especially if you want to allow the players to believe that child abuse may be going on before they realise it's a demon.

5*!!! Had a blast using a modified version of the demon (with some Legendary actions) as a final boss for my level 1 party.
My only feedback is splitting the maps up would make them a bit easier to use in VTTs, but this took maybe 10 mins in MS paint to fix to an acceptable degree.

This is really excellent work. I wish you would do this with more of the pieces you posted on Reddit for CoS. I can't figure out how to review on this website, but I give it 5 stars ***** and a smiley :)

MandyMod, you are an absolute legend. You've made my first time DMing CoS such a wonderful experience for myself and my players. This module was a blast to run, and your entire write up on reddit is absolutely amazing. Thank you so much.

All of your content on Reddit is phenomenal, and has helped me tremendously in my preparations! Thank you!

I love the addition of the orphanage to Vallaki. It makes so much sense and gives more depth to the NPCs. This adventure was a great idea, and a perfect way to make the bones of St. Andral plot line more interesting.
Thanks for all your hard work!

There's a typo in room 10.2's description on page 4; "a old couch" should be "an old couch".

Also, "Orphanage" is misspelled as "Orphange" on page 2, in the second paragraph under "Adapting the Adventure Outside Curse of Strahd": "As a one shot adventure, St. Andral's Orphange [sic] is designed for 3-5 players of levels 4-5."

Hey guys, I'm trying to find an adventure for my group of lvl 5 players. I can't find anywhere on here the recommended party size or player level. Can anyone who has played this suggest one to me?

It's on the second page, in the second paragraph under "Adapting the Adventure Outside Curse of Strahd": "As a one shot adventure, St. Andral's Orphange [sic] is designed for 3-5 players of levels 4-5."

I unfortunately found this after my group spoke to Milivoj and conned him into taking them to Hendrik's, but my group seems to want to help raise some money for Milivoj's siblings, so I thought I'd adapt the adventure to where it's one of Milivoj's siblings that is cursed, so when they come to bring him some money, they'll find him worried over one of the kids and the group will feel inclined to help. I look forward to adding this into my story, I'll try to review once we play through it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
