Oh, and the abbreviation ASI is never defined in the text. It may be rather common in chatrooms & threads, but it seems ill placed in a sourcebook, even if it's 3rd party.

I love the idea of companions and I appreciate the effort toward a system that works them into D&D. 3.5/5 stars.

This book contains many interesting ideas, some of which are over-powered or simply give players additional player characters. I appreciate the warning at the beginning (basically: use this tome at your own peril).

One big issue to note is that there are many typos and bad formatting in places. As an example of sub-par formatting, paragraph labels aren't distinguished by font or punctuation. This leads to what I would call Literary Difficult Terrain.

Here are some of my thoughts on the actual content:

I would not treat this book like the player's handbook, where basically anything in it is fair game--and in fact this is asserted throughout the text. I just want to double up on that sentiment: keep an open line of communication with your players on this material, and don't be afraid to say no if you think it'll break the game.

You've got 'Monsieur Manual' for the name of a magic item. Since it's meant to be about monsters, I imagine this is a typo. Also, the document has a weird tone problem. It seems like the document doesn't want to make the things it has available, like training your companions to use armor and then get it. Hard to know how to take that.

So if you had one of the trainer feat would your animal gain your proficiency bonus plus it's own proficiency bonus from its class table?

Do familiars have manuavers because the feat talks about it the the leveling column does not

Maneuvers for companions are listed as:
Dive, charge, pack tactics, extra attacks, keen senses etc. Pg13.

This is different from player class maneuvers that have superiority dice.

Familiar (summoned magical creatures) can take companion beast feats. The beast maneuvers are not feats.

In the pets/companions table on page 7 in the black and white, there are a bunch of asterisks on certain animals (Dog, Snake, Frog/Toad, and Goat) but there's nothing to say what these asterisks entail. Little help?
And I understand that you don't advocate for a normal pet to be brought along into combat and adventures, but isn't a 1hp per level increase a little slow? What about a 1d4 each level? I mean if I had a 5-year-old mastiff it would be a lot stronger than a 2-year-old, not just 3 HP worth?

I will reread through these sections, but it should be 1 hit dice per level and not hit point. So if you have a 5th level dog it should have 5 hit dice.
I will also check the asterisks when I am near a computer, but I believe them to be typical companion animals

You're right, I misread when I speed read this earlier. My players just adopted a mastiff and 4 dalmatian puppies so I've been doing a lot of quick research to adapt and figure out the best playstyles for pets. Thanks for all your hard work!

Thank you. It's more of a joke about not having pets in game, they can be very helpful when they level with you.

Hi, I'm really enjoying this so far. Some of it seems a bit overtuned at first glance, but I'll look into it more. I was wondering how you intended the companions to gain xp/level up? Like a standard PC, at a reduced rate, or as their "master" gains levels?

A companion creature should scale in levels with their trainers. I can make anmote clears section and add it in

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
