The Ranger Reimagined

To put it simple, the ranger class has many – real or perceived – issues, and many gamer minds wiser and more expert than mine tried their best to address all the problems that rise when the cool concept of the ranger is confronted with its poor capacities – to put it simple, with the fact that the class of the ultimate hunter and tracker is outclassed by an outlander fighter/rogue.

My shot is that the “ranger” suffers for being a too broad concept, one who needs a more flexible class in order to work properly for every possible ranger character. At its core, the class name speaks of a wilderness warrior specialized in hunting their preys in order to protect the civilians, and this is the idea behind the small tweaks I made to the core mechanics.

For this is not a large rewrite of the original class, nor a hoard of new mechanics hidden behind a well-know name. After all, this is a humble work for a humble – and nevertheless awesome – character class, the ranger. One of my favorite classes in fact, the first class I ever played.

I did my best to empower the two core features of the ranger, the favored enemies and terrains, with mechanical bonuses that shine true where and when they should. As the Beast Master is usually regarded as weaker than the Hunter, I focused on granting some juice to the former animal companion (namely, now you can ride your faithful tiger!). Last but not least, I did what I thought was right to tweak the nonspellcasting ranger.

So, this work, my shot at the ranger, is mostly a collection of tweaks and a rewrite, and thus work not completely mine – I was merely a scribe with a few ideas of his own.

So, please, feel free to comment, review, and suggest what you see fitting.

Thank you!

When I tried to tweak the non-spellcasting Ranger, one of the comments I got was that without the Hunter's Mark spell, the non-spellcasting Ranger was too weak for combat. Did you consider that or have any thoughts on that?

True, hunter mark is indeed one of the main features of the ranger, and perhaps the class' main asset.
However, I thought that the maneuvers and the damage bonus against the favored enemy (plus the initiative bonus in the favored terrain) would still make the ranger a good warrior.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
