Cast spells like the gods intended with this variant spellcasting system for the world’s greatest roleplaying game!

Ever since E. Gary Gygax and David Arneson penned the first edition of Dungeons & Dragons, spellcasters have suffered under the yoke of Jack Vance’s vision of magic. For over 40 years, 'magic-users' such as druids and wizards have struggled to make sense of spell slots, somatic components, and other trappings of 1950s fantasy. While these features were consistent with the mythology of Vance’s Dying Earth series, D&D players have been trying to ditch them for almost 20 years with varying degrees of success.

This supplement provides an exciting new attempt to solve this longstanding issue for Fifth Edition.

Dynamic Spellcasting is a system without finite magical resources like spell slots or spell points. Not only that, it resolves decades-old complaints about the spellcasting system, from the inflexibility of rote spells to the irrational attachment to mechanics that were obsolete before most of today’s D&D players were even born.

The rules provided in this supplement are playtest rules. Over 100,000 people playtested the D&D Next rules to create Fifth Edition, and we need playtesters to help us to essentially revise the entire spellcasting chapter. Included in this document you will find:

  • Completely revised rules for spellcasting, including disciplines, mana, and drain.
  • A new spellcasting class that combines the druid, the sorcerer, and the wizard.
  • Almost 100 spells, including many created specifically for this new system.

“I rue the day that Dungeon Master’s Workshop resolved to remove my influence from D&D!” -Jack Vance, probably

“When they made Second Edition, I really didn’t understand why they kept Vancian magic. I very much endorse Dungeon Master’s Workshop’s endeavours to fix this issue that’s been going on for 30 years too long!” -E. Gary Gygax (no, really...)

A thorough alternative for spellcasters. Whether a DM chooses to implement the work in it's entirety or in part it can easily be utilized. Homebrew DM's will find some useful material here in categorizations and specializations. The spells are fifth edition compatible and not in a game breaking way. A lot of thought and work went into this system.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
