Perseus's Guide to Vile Substances

Suggested Price $1.00

Perseus's Guide to Vile Substances!  The wayward alchemical enthusiast regails the reader with a cautionary brief on those substances found in D&D 3.5's classic "Book of Vile Darkness," with an additional new substance--Axelroot--thrown in for good measure.

+11 new substances integrated into the system found in Perseus's Guide to Substances, with all relevant rules blurbs reprinted here for convenience's sake.

+Colour commentary from the well-traveled Perseus, an Arcane Archer of fine living and constant adventure whose experiences have brought him the knowledge of a great many substances.

+Fully converts the Drugs found in the Book of Vile Darkness (3.5e version) to 5e, with expanded rammifications due to the Perseus's Guide system for substances being more sophisticated.

Thanks for this, just the thing for the shady peddler NPC who tried to sell my party a fake Philter of love.

The last sentence of the "Withdrawal" section seems to be missing some text, as is the 2nd sentence of the "Mixing substances" section (and the last word has a typo).

5e's passive perception is based on perception, so no need to mention it in addition to perception.

Do forward- and back-slashes mean "or" or "and"? Agony suggests it means "and", but comparing Axelroot with Blue mushroom powder suggests it means "or".

Redflower seems way too powerful for the easy ACR and DC.

Sannish: the Contagion spell doesn't mention pain.
Vodare: does "Bluff/Diplomacy" mean the deception and persuasion skills?

Addiction table:
Axelroot: Severe description has an extra full stop at the end.
Baccaran: saggier and tighter?
Devilweed: "Deceive"...See more

Unfortunately many of my DM's Guild titles were tried to a cookie based account system before the update to https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com. The laptop I'd access the site with then has died, taking the cookies with it. There's now a more formal log-in system that should prevent future tragedies of this nature.

That means some of them I can no longer access, save in the form everyone else can--downloading what currently exists on the DM's Guild.

The two other Perseus's Guides are on my current account, but this didn't make the cut off unfortunately. As cold a comfort as it is, the balancing issues will need to be dealt with by players until I can do a re-write--I'm considering redoing all the Perseus's Guides as a single megaguide, but I'm a bit busy making my own game and its splats atm.

I do have one question about Luhix (Not that my party is even close to affording it xD)

It says in Primary Effects that it's +2 to All Ability Scores for 1D4 hours.

But under Terminal Effects it says "-1 to All Ability Scores from start of PE and for 24 hours afterwards."

Isn't that just a +1 overall?

It cuts it to a -1 bonus on that level and it lasts for 24 hours, at minimum 20 longer than you'll be getting the +2 for.

You mention your party affording it--are you running a game with this module perchance? I'd love to hear about any play experience with it.

I have a trio of level 3 adventurers to work with so it may take a while.

I have the rules, any feedback I can provide I'll be more than happy to share, my own quibble is the Luhix itself.

While I understand the comedown of a -1 to all ability scores, a +1 to ability scores doesn't seem enough for 2000 a hit.

If they every take it up, I may tweak it for 4 hours of +2 to all ability scores and then a TE of -1 for 24 hours, only because a +1 isn't a game changer for everyone.

I could, of course, be wrong.

I'll have to re-contemplate, I've since taken to having a logic for pricing schemas that can be directly tied to a based product, but I believe this was either a direct port of the BoVD prices--or an oversight on my part. It does theoretically require traveling to an Evil plane to obtain, so there's a labour markup one can reasonably ask for, but mechanically there aught to be a payoff.

So PCs with odd ability scores increase those scores' *modifiers*, and there's no change to their original *modifiers* during the 20-23 hours of TE for those scores? Is the tilden meant to be the same as the range dashes for the other ACRs, meaning everyone fails the ACR? If they fail the addiction DC, is the Casual addiction cumulative with the TE (+1 for PE, -1 for TE, and -2 for Casual)? Are the higher levels of addiction cumulative with previous levels (-4 for Severe)?

Wouldn't most PCs have even scores via ASIs (at least for their primary abilities) by the time they can afford 2k gp/dose? PCs with even ability scores get no change to their *modifiers* during PE, and -1 to *modifiers* during TE.

While I like it I do have some quibbles:
Agony: Location: "The Living". Please explain.
Terran Brandy Primary Effect: +2 caster level. Is that a holdover from 3X that you didn't catch? Or does it mean spells act as if the slot they were cast with is 2 higher?

Agony is extracted directly from those who live and can suffer via dark rituals and vile machines+torture, so it was kind of a facetious way of saying organic life.

It's supposed to mean the spell is acting as if it were cast two levels higher, although I confess to having to double-check as the wording is ambiguous in its brevity.

Thanks Thomas--for some reason 684647 got out in front of the filename that isn't actually in the name of the file iUploaded, making it something of a dead link. I did a re-upLoad that should display properly, let me know if it still doesn't work.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
