Magus Class

A Warrior Scholar

Magi are skilled warriors as well as powerful magic users, dedicated to the protection of knowledge and the training of body and mind. As members of universities, abbeys, and arcane orders, they travel the realm to offer the guidance of philosophers, naturalists, and historians, backed by the strength of magic and steel.

The magus is a half caster, much like the ranger and the paladin. And much like how those classes rely on Wisdom and Charisma respectively, the magus relies on Intelligence.

Special care has gone into giving the class a distinct feel from the eldritch knight. To this end, themes of study, teaching, and academic specialization were incorporated, and combat was designed to encourage both spellcasting and weapon strikes.

A Wealth of Specializations

The archetypes, or higher faculties, that a magus can pursue are numerous. Each provides unique skills, spells, and thematic features with applications both in and out of combat.

  • The Alchemist, a master of matter, skilled with alchemical weapons and elixers.
  • The Arithmancer, a mathematician who augments their spellcasting with exact numerological relations.
  • The Astrologer, an expert of the zodiac, cognizent of the wonders and horrors between the lights of heaven, who divines the future and alter fate.
  • The Chronicler, a historian of heroes who can repeat great feats and summon the spirits of fallen warriors.
  • The Dæmonologist, a scholar of forbidden knowledge who can call upon hellfire and fiends, and draft infernal contracts.
  • The Leximancer, a master of the power of the written and spoken word.
  • The Philosopher, a lover of wisdom who probes the motives of others, exposes the fallacies of mages, and faces adversity with stoic resolve.
  • The Physician, a healer who combines restorative magic with medical arts and fights with surgical precision.

Bonus Spell

Includes the new spell star sight, granting you a clear view of the heavens no matter the weather nor how deep you venture underground. Use this spell for navigation and time tracking in the underdark.

I really like the idea behind the class and can't wait to try it out in my campaign but there are two points that bother me a bit. First is the fact that Spell Strike doesn't seem to csot anything meaning you could simply cast all your spells through your weapon and never use any spell slots. The second point is that Seal of the Astral Plane looks a bit broken to me, due to its phrasing, since it could be used to get rid of certain NPCs who might trouble the Party or maybe a certain villian who might not be a strong character in terms of fighting but maybe a ingenius mastermind, those NPCs would just be banished for eternity in the blink of a crossbow bolt hitting them or even more absurd a little pepple launshed at them with a slingshot. I might be reading too much into it but thats what it looks like to me.

Oh, sorry if the phrasing for Spell Strike was misleading; it's definitely supposed to use the spell's normal casting cost, including spell slots! Specifically, you use the spell slot when you cast the spell (not when you charge your weapon), exactly as if you had readied a spell with the Ready action. However, to balance it against the paladin's smites I may change it to use the spell slot when you charge the weapon.

As for Seal of the Astral Plane, there's not only a balance problem, it's also cut off by the right hand of the page! I'll definitely fix that in an update.

Update is released (version 5.0.0). On rereading Spell Strike, I realized that it *was* already supposed to consume the spell slot when you charged the weapon. However, I rewrote it to be much clearer and more explicit.

Seal of the Astral Plane has been fixed. I basically removed the part about eternal imprisonment. It's not a final strong seal now I guess, but in this case balance had to come before flavor. I also made some other tweaks, such as removing charm spells from the spell list.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
