"I adore everything about Bearthazar's and would like to only shop for familiars with him from now on. I love every single one of them. Help me."

"...thumbing through this book really gave me that lovely feeling of going to the animal shelter, locking eyes with the one that was just right for me, and saying, "This one. This one is perfect."

"probably the only way I'd ever touch the Beast Master ranger is if my animal companion could be something like Paddington or the Drama Llama"

Welcome, one and all, to Bearthazar's House of Familiars

Perhaps your wizard needs a Teacup Chimaera?

Maybe your ranger needs an Immovable Rat?

Does your warlock want an Emotional Support Imp? (Yes, I am afraid the pom-poms are extra.)

4

Over 50 new familiars, companions and critters for your 5th edition game:

  • Find the perfect pet, from familiar animals like Sloths to bizarre new creatures like the Teacup Chimaera, the Rug Mule and the Man Drake
  • Haggle with Mr Bearthazar over the price (naturally) and purchase from his suggested upgrades (such as changes in colour, fluffy baskets, or other miscellanea)
  • Learn the secret formula to summon your familiar once more should it perish (or if you kick it off a cliff for eating all your rations)
  • New Ranger Companions, Wizarding Familiars, Pact of the Chain Beasties and Unique or Powerful Companions are all included inside

Attend the knowledgeable and urbane Mr Bearthazar in his shop, and allow him to help you choose the perfect new friend for your travels.

Each familiar comes with a name, statistics, a personality and advice from Mr Bearthazar himself on how best to care for them.

Once again, Oliver Darkshire has excused me from writing any plot whatsoever and just inserting one of his creations and seeing where the players end up.
Also, I'd like to purchase one Peter, please.

72 pages, at the last count! [And to help you out in in future, if you look at the top right of the listing near where the authors, artists and social media share links are listed on a browser, there's a little section for page count. It's not obvious, so people do miss it all the time, but you might find it handy to know.]

I feel like I am missing something obvious but can you explain how the familiars are priced? Like obviously I get that Serra at 50pp is 50 platinum pieces but then Doris is listed with the price 3/8 and Ginger is 9/c and these are less clear to me.

PS I love this so much, basically all my players are getting familiars instead of magic items now

Ah, you have stumbled across one of my many completely inaccessible easter eggs. In the tradition of all the best antiquarians (a field in which I have laboured), Mr Bearthazar has had some of his stock for a very long time. In some cases, so long that the currency he was using at the time has gone out of circulation - hence the strange differences in some of his labels. In these cases, he often finds he has to resort to barter, or make up the new price on the spot.

Seems really cool from what I saw on Twitter, but just as overpriced as most D&D content

This is an extensive, original, clever project that's full of quality writing, art, and extremely impressive layout. Based on the belief that creators should make a fair (or at least minimum) wage for their time, effort, and skills, this product is actually vastly underpriced for all the work that went into it.

This is exactly the reason why there is a dearth of great content. This attitude right here.

The book features all original art, exceptionally clever content, and clearly was designed using professional software. All of that costs money.

The book was written, edited, and re-edited to ensure that it has great quality for your enjoyment. All of that takes time. Time is money.

You can get the PDF for the same amount as a cheap bottle of wine or one movie viewing at the cheap seats. Those entertain you for a couple of hours at best; the PDF will entertain your whole table many times, for many hours. If you also want the book, you pay more because there are also production costs and shipping.

Taken altogether, the product is pretty freaking reasonably priced. You need to start accepting that creators can't put out great content like this for nothing but goodwill. You want quality, you have to pay for quality.

I've been super excited about this since I saw the possibility of its existence on Twitter. So I had to buy immediately. I'll review when I have the POD! :) Thank you!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
