Great supplement! I have a question about Chapter 2. What is it that the party is supposed to take away from this chapter? I'm guessing one, Strahd taking possession of Ravenloft and two, Strahd learning of his mother's passing? Is there something else I'm missing?

Hey David! Thanks so much for downloading. Chapter 2 was written for a few reasons:

1. As you mentioned, the party gets to see Strahd claim the castle. More than that though, they get to see that he is ritually committed to the land (hopefully not the last time they hear him say that he "Is the Land). They also have a chance to speak to his other commanders in the courtyard who you can set up for future chapters.

2. They learn the castle's namesake—his mother. This is something no living person in Barovia actually knows and gives the party another tool in their psychological toolkit against Strahd. I added another layer to this: Vasili von Holtz has a cottage outside of Vallaki that is password protected. The password? Ravenovia.

3. They get a tiny bit of access to exploring a room of the castle, and if they've not yet visited Ravenloft, they now know that there is a secret room behind the fireplace.

4. You also get to set up Gabriel Andral as a recurring...See more

I had a question about how to run this: My intention was to try and sprinkle these adventures between levels of the 5e campaign module. However, the module goes from 1-10 and this goes from 5-15. Is there a recommended way to line this up with the original campaign that ends at level 10 whereas I'd like the party to fully read the tome before finishing the campaign.

Is there some kind of level guide for the chapters? I saw the note about starting at level 5 and it scales about 1.5 per chapter. I'm thinking the only way to get them to fit is to do a couple per level to get them all in before level 10 but I may just be doing this all wrong haha..

Hi Nathan! Thanks for checking out the adventure and for reaching out. The module was built to accommodate a lot of the common homebrew expansions used by DMs running Curse of Strahd, but the leveling suggestions are easy enough to adjust for! Most of the combat-related encounters actually have scaling recommendations for stat block changes built-in, and any of the social/environment encounters can have their DCs adjusted to match the tier your party is at.

The only other thing to consider would be adjusting the rewards as well. The spells received by completing certain chapters go beyond the capabilities of level 10 adventurers. You might want to swap those out with alternative rewards appropriate to their level.

Lastly, it sounds like you're planning on telling your players "okay, you are now in the book" where this is more designed to be guided by player decisions to actively go into a chapter. I'd be curious to hear how you aim to introduce new segments to them if you...See more

Yeah I'm still trying to figure that out myself honestly. I do want the players to engage with it in any of their downtime between events but want to encourage spacing them out throughout the campaign. So 2 thoughts here;

1) Pack these in their order and have 2 per level starting at 5. Perhaps limiting the decoding checks per level by making them exhaustive in some fashion and getting 2 more options each level.

2) I havent read the whole thing yet but perhaps making chapters available prior or after experiencing a familiar location. Like Chapter 1 would be come available prior to or after exploring Argynvostholt. Chapter 4 after the events in Kresk with Sergi & Ireena and the fountain. Chapter 7 after dealing with Yester Hill.

I guess the idea was to make available the option to explore deeper into the lore of an area or situation as it was relevant in the campaign.

Maybe you can break it up into scattered pages or magical memory fragments of some kind scattered across Barovia. That way you could break up the chapters to be location-dependent and just scale the level for that chapter based on whenever the party arrives on the scene.

This was really neat and perfect for a solo interlude where the PC actually has a lot in common with Strahds story.

My only issue, is that its fairly challenging to run some of the things designed as combats, and still stick to the story described. In some cases the box text covers quite a bit of time when the PC wanted, of course to interfere. I dont mind the concept of the text story not allowing reply, it is a story and magical quantum leap thing, but it just doesnt flow well when its mixed with combat. The best example is the Wedding chapter.

I want to reiterate, I really enjoyed it, and made it work; those scenes were just a little awkward trying to allow for D&D combat, and also dictate the narrative direction.

Hey there Joshua! Thank you for your feedback, and I absolutely get that. Trying to strike a balance between the history that had to happen and the moments they could change was a big challenge. I'm working on a few new projects right now, and I'm trying to really parse down my readable sections.

I would love a few specific examples from when you ran the wedding chapter that I could improve on for the future if you'd be up for sharing.

I think the best 2 examples would be the beginning when the wedding party gets mowed down and strahd one shots his brother, and then when the party is, I think, supposed to leave in the middle and then Strahd follows after killing the rest of the traitors.

Partly what I don't get is can the players actually change what happened in the past? And if so what motivation do they have to work for Strahd in the past rather than against him? Sorry if this is answered later in the supplement for I have only read the start

Tell them before every one of them "Remember, this isn't your characters interacting with Strahd's memories, this is what he wrote down. Don't act like your characters, act like the characters your characters are reading about"

Im not the author, but I actually decided they could change things in some cases. But I put something else there to encourage them to "finish the story" which meant following history.

Like, in the chapter where Strahd becomes a Vampire. When they got to the big pit, my 2 players wanted to distract and wrestle strahd, while the other went down first. So, he did... and so I played out the sarcophagas thing as though my player was Strahd. But the players both wanted to, of course, fight the evil vampire spirit demon thing - and stop strahd from turning.

So, I quickly threw a young Red Shadow dragon as Vampyr (My players were lvl 12 and two of them). They were fighting and trying to keep strahd from feeding to finish the ritual. But finally Vampyr was like, "Okay, Im done. Peace." And started to just fly out the hole.

So the PCs were faced witht he choice of letting Vampyr out into the world, in the past, or quickly finishing the chapter before he...See more

Hi there Seth! Welcome to Barovia, and thank you for making my module part of your party’s journey. I’m happy to provide the plain text version of the letter. Here you go:
———————————————————— ————
Dear Lord Strahd von Zarovich, ruler of the great land of Barovia,

I write today to inform you of the passing of Queen Ravenovia van Roeyen, beloved ruler, wife of the grand King Barov—now deceased.

An illness took to her on the road from your homeland, and our healers were unable to prevent its spread. She wished dearly to see the lands which you claimed in the von Zarovich name.

The remainder of our caravan will arrive in the Barovian hills with the Queen in seven days' time.

Our attending Dawnbringer’s magic will ensure that she completes the journey to Castle Ravenloft, and we may conduct a complete burial service at your discretion.

Sorrowfully yours,

Father Groza...See more

Fantastic supplement. At the risk of being a Debbie Downer I had one very small issue, The section M2d on the 'Order of the Guardians Monastery' map isn't aligned with with grid squares of the others parts of the map, which makes it slightly awkward to use on virtual table top.

I just want to make sure you will get paid for your work, so mabe there will be a way to place translation directly there, so it won't be accessible form another source?

I LOVE THIS! My party is currently awaiting session 3 of the campaign and I want to introduce this early on and start prepping it in Fantasy Grounds. The PDF formatting makes copying text cumbersome and tedious due to the randomly inserted line breaks that is inherent with PDF text.

Is it possible to get a "text only" version of this module, like in a word document or google docs or something to make transitioning it into Fantasy Grounds easier?

Thanks again for this module. It is friggin amazing!

Hi Chris! Thanks so much for the kind words. I hope your party enjoys – or dreads – the tome as much as mine has. Unfortunately, due to the nature of building the version here in Homebrewery, the original text document is littered with markdown code that makes it a pretty nasty affair, but I do intend to clean it up eventually. I'm currently working on some minor updates (and a new cover illustration) for a 1.5 upgrade in the coming months

If you're willing to work through the clunky code bits in the interim though I'm happy to share a link to the Google Doc version with a customer! Feel free to shoot me a message on Discord (Aciduous#2711) or email me at aciduousscripts@gmail.com.

There is a program called notepad ++. If you copy and paste from a PDF then into the program, you can get rid of all the line breaks. There is a video on YouTube on how to create a mod in fantasy grounds.

Excellent content! Definitely worthy of the original book. But i have just a little question about something i didnt understand, that i would like to have an answer to. In the chapter 2, Rise of Ravenloft, Strahd receives a letter informing that the Queen Ravenovia has passed away. There we have a link to the image on imgur of the letter itself. My only problem is: I couldn't in any way understand what name is in the signature, and even thinking of all the characters i know in the book, and trying to relate the names to the few letters i could discern, i cant get it. I actually can't even know what exactly is the name in the signature. And thats making me crazy!!! I would be very happy to have a clarification on that, thanks!

Hey Rafael! Thanks for the comment. That signature reads "Fr. Groza." The "Fr." is an abbreviation the Catholic church uses as shorthand for "Father," and Groza was a random Barovian surname that I assigned to this otherwise unimportant priest character. In the canon of this Tome, Groza was one of the religious envoys traveling with the queen but nothing more.

This is truly a work of art worthy of the original sourcebook! As others have said, it adds depth and context to many of the events and characters in the core module (not to mention some great sequences and well-balanced rewards for PC's). I recommend this for every DM running CoS!
Some feedback for the creator:
There are a number of spelling and grammar oversights throughout. This becomes a real problem when they occur in the blocks of descriptive text meant to be read to players. I would welcome a revised version!
The beginning of Chapter 10 seems wonky. The Strahd-Vasili thing should be this big reveal, but there's no explicit build up to this in the descriptive text. The beginning of the chapter says that the characters are present when he arrives via carriage and transforms, but the first block of text for players places them already inside the manor home. It's confusing. I would recommend either rewriting the first player text block to include Strahd transforming into Vasili *dun dun dun*,...See more

Hi there Zachary,

Thank you so much for all of the extremely detailed feedback. I did several passes of edits myself throughout the publication process, but there are definitely still quite a few errors that went overlooked.

I'm more than happy to take a look over the introduction to chapter 10 again. I was struggling with how to establish the scene for what becomes a rather long chapter in the book.

Regarding chapter 11, I will definitely go through and, at minimum, add a content warning to the chapter and the beginning of the book. The content itself was another huge challenge for me in the writing process because I felt like it was so important that the characters had a role rather than just fully watching it, powerless, from start to finish. I would love some assistance in brainstorming alternatives. Feel free to join us over in the r/CurseofStrahd Discord server and we can chat there! https://discord.com/invite/UkxTSbe

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
