This is a controller type class for 5e D&D known as the Sigil.

You can also get the fantasy grounds module of this class Here.

If you want to play a class that gives you a lot of utility but deals with a very niche role as an anti-spell caster then this is the class for you.

It fits into the meta as a controller type so its DPR isn't going to be something write home about but as a support, scholar and a bit of luck you might find yourself enjoying yourself in new ways.

For new players this class is a bit feature heavy and spell casters in general are not what new players to D&D should really just jump into but the simplest path is probably the Inquisitor. In most cases the Inquisitor wont be casting spells but rather will be relying on their foci and innate defensive ability to hold their own. They are a bit more forgiving when you make mistakes after 6th level with their higher ac and dex saves and that might make the difference to fill in the learning curve.

For advanced players of D&D if you want something new try out the Seeker or if you want a familiar feel go with the Keeper. Keepers have a knowledge feature that scales with the Sigil level. They also gain a few chances to recover their chaos points based on the level of the spell, this means they will be casting more and more as they get to higher levels. Knowledge itself becomes an immense boon at far later levels with the ability to retain a powerful spell you've seen. Sadly you lose the spell if you expend it but the potential is there.

Speaking of potential, the most powerful of the three might be Seeker if only because of its ability to scale its offense based on how well you've prepared. If you feel like you want to try you hand at being batman then Seeker is for you.

Update: It has been a year since I set out to add more to this class and I can say with some satisfaction that I am 70% done. To be clear there are no reworks to the stuff you guys already have access to but I've been testing, tweaking and out right changing things to the new content. I'm really excited about this because I am finally entering the phase where I run the class features by folks who I trust to know 5e.

I hope you guys will look forward to the new subclass. So far it is delivering an entirely unique experience to 5e and is holding it's own niche within the class.

I did lie a little though - there was one change to the spell list and the addition of the extended spell list for the new D&D content to the main class spell section.

So what does 70% mean for when this content will be published... it means that I expect this to be finished in a few months and by finished I mean something that will only see minor tweaks from me and otherwise is safe for use in...See more

Hey folks, it's been a while.

I recently took on the challenge of adding something more to this class.

I thought of adding a healer roll aspect to this and had on and off thoughts about it. The obvious reservations of gifting an arcane caster with healing weighed on my mind but I saw the theurgy and figured... why not. To be honest there is nothing wrong with WOTC's version in my mind... except that I really dislike the whole fealty to a god thing in order to access your magic... wizards are supposed to be guys who are more independent than that.

Plus I really just figured I would like to add an intelligence caster healer and also the class I think has the potential to do well in the support role without stepping too far into the bard or cleric's territory.

So long story short please look forward to the healer subclass update. Thanks!

Hello again, okay the newest version is almost complete and I apologize for the delay. I'll note the changes in the update section when it's out but it's probably good to briefly go into them here:

Change Log:

Oath and Chaos: Wording change to add proficiency for the weapon, I thought I put it there but I didn't apparently.

Second Trigger: Additional attacks removed and replaced with a condition, damage over time removed and instead is extra damage increased from 3d6 to 4d6. Note extra damage does not multiply on a critical. Intent was to space out the consistency of Inquisitor for damage across multiple turns while maintaining the survivability of the Keeper and Seeker in close combat if they are lucky enough.

Chaotic Reveler: Loses its choice for resistance and instead uses recovery dice to add an additional roll to any save against charm or fear keeping the highest result. On a success you still rebound the effect, the duration is now the effects normal duration....See more

Hey folks, an update is probably going to hit this month on this class.

There wont be any large changes it's mostly changing things like "an" to "a".

I'm not exactly trying to focus on the language but some things just pop out.

The more important changes will be in the DMs section including an extended spell list for Xanathar and a short explanation on which magic items this class can utilize of the ones made available in the DMG and hopefully beyond.

There was a small spell list update and no I haven't updated the FG module for it yet and I probably wont since the changes are so small.

I've had 2 years now with feed back from players on this class and found that it gets pretty strong at the 17th level. It isn't as strong as say a Wizard at spell casting by that level but it certainly is no slouch.

I thought that by that level there were a lot of mechanics to keep track of and I was right especially for Seeker and...See more

I have a question related to the keeper.
Is the intelligence bonus to the damage of cantrips described under divergent tide only applied to cantrips used with the particular bonus action, or for normal cantrip casts as well?

Sorry for the late reply.

Coincidentally I was looking at this today when trying to figure out what I would do next with the keeper, for right now Keeper will remain the same but to answer your question:

I would apply it generally, though I intended for it to be only through Divergent Tide originally. I will rewrite that portion under Chaos Shard after considering further the implications.

Okay after checking out the original philosophy of why I wrote it the way I did:

It was intended to be with Divergent Tide for a resource reason. We wanted to tie the bonus of using your Sigil spell casting modifier to the limited spell casting. Since Keeper should be able to technically cast the most spells the mechanics was to make it so that casting cantrips for combat purposes was more appealing without devaluing things like Chaos Trigger.

Verdict: The intelligence bonus to damage and casting cantrips using your Sigil spell casting ability are only applied when you are casting through Divergent Tide.

What I wrote before can be ignored.

I wonder if this is a good place for this?

So in order to share my intentions with this class a little I will be posting this here:

This class seems to be getting very very close to where I cannot do anything with it anymore from a mechanical stand point.

I'm enjoying the changes I've made til now and I hope everyone using it enjoys it as well.

To digress a little and answer the only question that matters: Is this class fun? I would say I do not know, it is? When I use it as a player or from the DMs chair it's always with the view of a designer which is it's own kind of fun but definitely not the same thing I get when I play cleric or DM for savvy players.

So back on point, I posted this here on DMsGuild thinking there would be no large changes to the class, all the math was done this class was where I wanted it to be. Except it wasn't which was probably why I kept thinking of ways to fix something that isn't broken. Flavorful language aside this...See more

No update this week, there are some changes but because I'm still testing certain things I wanted to hold off until it's all ready.

The changes are more things that tighten this class so that it does not work too well.

Stacking is mainly what this next update tackles as certain conditions cause certain effects and by end game this class has quite a few moving parts.

Part of this was intentional because it took team work to actually accomplish those things but I wanted to address them anyway.

So most if not all the changes are either rewording of things for clarity or end game adjustments to taper things back a bit.

One of the monikers of this class is that its spell casting potential is random, it's explained that they do not tap into the weave to cast their spells and rather rely on their threading.

It's things like that I want to explain better in the pdf before I bring everything over to a fantasy grounds module.

There are a few changes for this Thursday but I'm debating on releasing it... one is a balance change that deals with a particular play style which requires 2 or more players for the Sigil to exploit it. But it's still possible so I changed it.

I am still putting together my thoughts on where I want the lore to go when I put pen to paper.

Basically I'm debating what lines should go or even where to begin. I know what the story is and I have all my source material but I am trying to find a way to upend the tea table without upsetting the arrangement so to speak.

Another change is to the way the three stories are told, I was told that it's confusing how they blend so I gave them spacing, I'm not sure if I like it but it's there for now. The wording might change a bit as well as some of it is a bit tricky at first glance which doesn't set a good tempo -I think- for the rest of the module.

I also changed the Dubiety feature to be more like what I wanted, the pure...See more

Eldritch trapper doesn't state if you only recover your spent chaos points after the artifices has been used. So, do artifices never "go bad" and if so, you shouldn't be able to regain the spent chaos points. Otherwise, lets say given downtime rules and the rules to create Artifices, you could create a bunch basically getting free "spells". If you created this feature for a reason, i would like to know so I can understand it from your point of view. I know I've been making a lot of comments, and I don't want to upset you at all, I'm actually super interested in this class, so that's why I want to make sure all the rules are worked out and balanced. This class sounds amazing and adds another "caster" that uses INT, which is really needed. Again, sorry if any of my first comments sounded mean, that wasn't my goal.

No I really appreciate the inquiry and I'm excited to respond. It's great to know you do like this class.

Speaking with another DM to review Chaos Trigger we decided that I made too many things implicit in order to save space on the PDF. So I added that the application requires from the begining concentration as well as I'm working on a way to get it to clearly state that it is single target only. While you can infer that is the intent based on just how 5e rules on concentration as well as weapons only hitting one target at a time as well as the targeting section later on he stated that I'm writing for children who can read. So everything must be as clearly stated as possible.

Eldritch Trapper:

So no you do not recovery spent chaos points after an artifice has been used.

Artifices could go bad but that would be up to your DM, if the DM thinks throwing a clay artifice in lava might damage the device then I would say that makes sense.

You store a number...See more

Precise Entropy.... I understand that getting a nat 1 on saves is very hard (a 5% chance) but that is a lot of damage. The issue is, that I actually like this feature but seems like it will draw people to this archtype more than the others. I'm not saying that this is a bad feature, I'm saying the exact opposite, it's too good; especially if it is paired with other spells like hold person or sleep.

Whats the point of Knowledge Kept.... it doesn't seem to do anything. The only benefit is that you can choose any spell for your class list with a casting time of an action and 8th level or lower. By the time you get this ability, you most likely have the spells you are going to want to use, and its too unpredictable to be of use. (Because of that 1 hour ritual and still needing the componets.) You still are using your limited points on a spell, but you can't gain these points back until you wasted the shard or cast the spell.

Right so chaos is like that at best you have a 10% chance of meeting the condition when you get to 20th level.

What prevents the spamming of it is the limited spell pool, the cost of spells are by a multiplicative more expensive the higher their levels than spell slots, while Keeper does in fact have the ability to push out a lot of magic compared to the other paths it isn't breaking the spell caster encounter average in the least.

There may however be some rounds where its damage goes through the roof on some targets.
-----

Knowledge Kept is actually very powerful, it plays more into preparation than anything else. So again this is going into designer perspective and I've seen players go about the keeper in different ways... very different ways. But Knowledge Kept has a lot of uses as the spell list for Sigil isn't that bad, it just depends on the campaign.

Also keep in mind rest times; everything for Keeper is on a long rest, while they do have cantrips their spells are where their power is at.

I'll give away one of the many tactics of Knowledge Kept, its kind of niche but this class is at its core a counter spell caster.

Broken Echo >> Arcane Echo > Knowledge Kept (Feeble Mind) + Chaotic Maelstrom. You just managed to Feeble Mind two targets at the cost of one 8th level spell.

And if you had a long rest between when you stored the Feeble Mind and when you used it you'd have done it essentially for free.

It is balanced, it was designed to simulate two weapon fighting which is what it does to a lesser extent.

Chaos Trigger is a lot packed tightly together in nearly all cases people expect it to act like Hunters mark or Hex and as a consequence think it is worded oddly from my experience.

So for starters it is not hex or hunters mark.

1. You place it on a target as part of the damage effect from a weapon attack.
2. After any weapon damage you can use a bonus action to deal an additional 1d8
3. You have advantage on certain skill checks regarding magic affecting or being used by a target.
4. You can transfer the trigger when the target dies or if the target is an inanimate object.
5. If you roll a 1 on the damage die you deal an addition 2d10 and lose concentration
6. If you lose concentration it prompts a recovery die which you use to attempt to regain the feature.
7. It can be used once per long rest and requires concentration which scales....See more

Can you be specific, general criticisms do not help.

In most cases the wording is done in a way to prevent wonky things from happening while staying as close to the PHB language as possible.

However if you feel there are specific parts you can post a few of them here and I'll gladly take a look at them.

Hello, sorry if i sounded rude, didn't mean to be. In Chaos Trigger, there is a passage that says ""If the target drops to 0 hit points, is not a creature or this effect is without a mark;weapon damage or touching a new target may then "mark" that target."" This passage is a little confusing mainly the "or this effect is without a mark" and "a new target may than "mark" that target".

Right so you are maintaining concentration through out the use, because you could technically target anything with it if that something were no longer in existence then you would technically be without a mark.

So it's basically hunter's mark or Hex, in how you target a new enemy after your first mark is killed.

For the most part the language is similar but is changed slightly to reflect that it has out of combat utility which might be where it seemed confusing as it isn't entirely a combat SLA.

Also consider that hex and hunter's mark both do damage when you damage a target for free. This requires a bonus action because it wasn't meant to be hex.

Also note that no where does it say that you cast this ability, the mention of somatic component only means you need a hand free to activate the ability.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
