Need a one-shot horror adventure new players?!

THE TEMPLE OF BHAAL is a "one-shot" adventure designed to last a single session of about 3 or 4 hours, for 1st level characters. The adventure has a Gothic horror theme, and would be ideal as a game to run for fans of the macabre or for Halloween.

The party investigates the disappearance of an order of clerics inside a haunted temple and discover a hidden crypt beneath that is dedicated to three evil deities associated with murder, pain and poison. They must stop an evil ritual taking place there, and destroy a vengeful spirit before it is too late...

Tom, I’m going to run this over Christmas, with some tweaks as stated by Joseph. Do you have any other one shots you might be uploading or have already completed?

Hi Douglas, sorry for the delay in my reply and thank you for purchasing this. I hope it goes well! I am currently working on my second one-shot adventure, which I have almost completed. It's similar in the sense that it's designed to be a one-shot aimed at newer players, this time it is themed around fairy folklore, and the fey-wild and is going to be called the 'Palace of Evendur'.

I ran this with some alterations for a party of 1st level characters. Since you asked for critique, here goes: first the brown mold. The DMG p 105 gives brown mold a DC 12 CON save to take half of 22 (4d10) cold damage. Failing that save would kill most level 1 characters outright. I'm not clear why you would have that hazard in an otherwise low CR module. Second, Staff of Healing, a rare and powerful healing item, given at 1st level seems heavy handed. It's not impossible to draw it randomly by using the hoard tables in the DMG, but the odds of rolling for it are roughly 3 in 10,000 (3/100*1/100). It's a very strong item to give out intentionally, and novice DMs might not realize. A few healing potions would fit the bill without being gratuitous.

In the Central Temple, Oskar is in one of two 5-ft square cages as drawn on your map. Is it assumed that the specter enters the same cage using in corporeal movement before it attacks, sharing Oskar's square, as you wrote "Oskar sits in one of the two...See more

Hi Joseph, thank you for this critique. I will take a second look into these with regards to doing a further update to ensure a more balanced challenge and to answer some of the questions that you have raised.
Regarding Oskar, he knows of Morgran's daughter but he doesn't know her name but I will clarify that in the module and explain it properly. Thanks again for your comments.

Hi Thomas, my feedback is that the fixed-width font (Courier?) that you use is very hard to read and wastes a lot of space. The map is very nice, but you should get your text checked by someone as there are a few mistakes (e.g. "it's" instead of "its").

Hi John F. Thank you for this. I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know what you think. I will have a look at the font and see if I can improve it. I will also look at proof reading again for any bits I may have missed and then do a general update of the file.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
