Improved Commoners - Villagers

Here is the first of a new series inspired by my Improved Backgrounds product

Inspiration (and editorial guidance) was provided by user KDLadage. He suggested creating commoner NPC stat blocks based on the backgrounds in my Improved Backgrounds DM Guild product. After a few attempts I settled on this format where a small number of background types are found in each document, and each document represents a certain settlement type.

The commoners defined here are those you would see and meet in a human village. It provides a stat block sleightly modified from the MM 10-10-10-10-10-10 commoner with no skills or proficiency, which gives stats for one type of NPC at different tiers of age and skill. Also included is one (or two) NPC types that are distinct from the stadard progression of the NPC type, but that still fit the general NPC type.

The inspiration for assigning skill proficiencies comes from the backgrounds in my previously mentioned product; the notion of a +1 proficiency bonus comes from a zero level character concept (obscure homebrew notion).

This document also defines what these commoners are carrying, and what items you can find in their homes. This is useful if you want to give your NPCs a little more depth and distinction, or if your PCs want to steal it from them.
