UPDATE: Version 2.0

The new version adds some bells and whistles that I've come up with through the course of my own use of the notebook: a list of monster traits for easy access, calendar templates, timeline templates, a partial Forgotten Realms timeline, SRD spell descriptions, breakdown tables of spells by level, by class, by casting time, etc., template spellcasting blocks for each type of caster, additional DM screen info pages, and a template party reference sheet. You can import the online version (you can download it separately) according to the instructions below. Hope it's useful to you all!

UPDATE: For those of you who wanted to be able to use this file with OneNote Online, the new version should enable you to do that. The .zip now has a folder titled "DM Notebook Template Online." Extract the contents of the .zip, and then go to the OneNote importer page at this link. Select the extracted "DM Notebook Template Online" folder in the importer. That will upload the notebook into your OneNote Online and you should be able to use it there.

This OneNote notebook provides a template for running sessions and organizing your campaign.  It has tabs for:

  • NPCs
  • Monsters
  • Lore
  • Handouts
  • Events/Scenes/Encounters
  • Items
  • Maps
  • DM Screen

It includes template stat blocks with collapsible sections and convenient checkboxes for tracking the use of spell slots and limited use features. The notebook is searchable and allows hypertext links between pages. With this tool you can keep all the information you need when creating and running your campaign in one convenient location.

I was very pleased with this until I upgraded my PC and found that I cant use it with the current version of OneNote. If I want to keep using this I instead have to download the older 2016 version. I think with some effort in place you could find a way [...]

it should be noted that this only works with OneNote 2016. The current version of OneNote via Office 365 or free with windows 10 does not allow for templates. [...]

On the surface, it appears a very fesurable tool but it fails because it is NOT in a more widely used file format such as .pdf or .docx. FIX that flaw and I will be happy to re-evaluate. Would you send me the link for the Mac version please [...]

Just downloaded and am having a cursory glance; if you are using One Note for DM duties this is a fantastic template. I have been using One Note for a while now but am not a very organized person, but this template just took all the work out of [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
