Your world is about to get much bigger. Infinitely bigger, specifically!

Codex of the Infinite Planes is a Dungeons & Dragons supplement expanding upon the planes of existence. The planes have been a presence in Dungeons & Dragons since the earliest days of the game, with multiple sourcebooks (and even an entire setting) dedicated to describing the fantastic worlds existing beyond the Material Plane.

Most of these previously released sourcebooks are constrained in scope and content by serving multiple purposes. Codex of the Infinite Planes is dedicated to detailing exciting and usable content centered around the known planes of existence for the purpose of using in memorable adventures. The known planes of existence, in this case, includes the four elemental Inner Planes and their intersections, the two transitive planes, three echo planes, and sixteen Outer Planes.

Each plane receives a detailed description, including game mechanics handling hazards and phenomena, notes on traveling to and within the plane, a look at the powerful people and organizations operating on the plane, a review of the monstrous inhabitants, a host of interesting sites and treasures, random encounter tables for each plane, and adventure hooks providing examples of using the plane in a scenario. The information is largely aimed at Dungeon Masters looking to craft exciting adventures utilizing the planes, but the information is valuable to players looking to create characters tied to the greater multiverse of the campaign setting.

Other releases in the Infinite Planes series provide content useful in different ways. Monsters of the Infinite Planes provides creature statistics for over 200 monsters inhabiting the planes along with helpful generic statistics for planar NPCs. Heroes of the Infinite Planes includes new subclass options for each class along with new feats, spells, and magical items. Look for these releases on the DMs Guild!

Contents of the Codex

This book provides information for the Dungeon Master helpful to utilizing the known planes of existence in their campaign settings. Alternately, it can be used as a complete campaign setting in itself! The contents of the book are roughly defined as follows. Much of the information is meant to supplement the content in the Dungeon Master’s Guide, specifically Chapter 2: Creating a Multiverse.

Chapter 1 Essence of the Infinite Planes outlines the general principals of the planes of existence as they exist within Dungeons & Dragons, along with definitions for common terms used throughout the book.

Chapter 2 Using the Infinite Planes provides tips and suggestions on how to use the planes of existence in your campaign, along with details on traveling through them and a glossary of keywords that can be helpful to find useful information in the book.

Chapter 3 Gazetteer of the Infinite Planes forms the bulk of the book and includes detailed descriptions of 26 planes of existence. Planes detailed include: Plane of Air, Plane of Earth, Plane of Fire, Plane of Water, Border Elemental Planes, Astral Plane, Ethereal Plane, Plane of Shadows, Plane of Faerie, Plane of Dreams, Infinite Layers of the Abyss, Infernal Battlefield of Acheron, Olympian Glades of Arborea, Peaceable Kingdoms of Arcadia, Wilderness of the Beastlands, Twin Paradises of Bytopia, Tarterian Depths of Carceri, Blessed Fields of Elysium, Bleak Eternity of Gehenna, Gray Waste of Hades, Ever-Changing Chaos of Limbo, Clockwork Nirvana of Mechanus, Seven Heavens of Mount Celestia, Nine Hells of Baator, Windswept Depths of Pandemonium, and Heroic Domains of Ysgard!

Chapter 4 The Codex and Its Keepers describes the Codex of the Infinite Planes itself, along with the planar sages dedicated to studying its mysteries.

Chapter 5 Toolbox provides information for crafting new planes of existence. It includes a master list of all hazards and phenomena from Chapter 3 along with suggestions on how to build new planes of existence. They’re not known as the Infinite Planes for nothing!

Does the information about the various planes in this book contain new sites/locations within the planes or build upon any existing sites mentioned in 2e Planescape products? Or does this mostly cover the content that was already covered in older planar materials published by WotC/TSR?

I don't run a 5e game, so I'm just wondering if I could make use of this book even if I already own all of the 2e Planescape books and planar books printed from WotC. In any case, it sounds like a well put together book for people that don't have access to older Planescape material!

Interesting question! My starting point for each Codex volume was the Manual of the Planes from 1st and 3rd edition, since at the time I released the Codex of the Infinite Planes Planescape was not an "authorized" setting for the DMsGuild. Some of the Planescape material I incorporated as long as it didn't correlate to the key components of the setting (factions and Sigil, primarily). For example, I expanded a lot on the nature and denizens of the Beastlands, including detailing more organizations which made sense within the setting. My goal was to make a useful book for anyone interesting in exploring the planes in their campaign - obviously the mechanics are built for 5th edition but they are (relatively) easy to port over to previous editions as well. I hope this helps, thank you again for your question!

What about the Greek gods in Arborea? That was pretty much the feature of Arborea that it was shared by the Elven gods and the Grichian gods.

Thank you for your inquiry! Overall, I tried to downplay the presence of the deities across the planes, especially the historic ones, and doubly especially on planes that were traditionally viewed as the "domains of the gods" - Arborea and Ygard are good examples of this I think - but with an eye towards maintaining the overall vibe. The gods are there - for example, Arborea features information about Bacchus and the Seldarine, and Mount Olympus gets details too. But I tried to pull back from interacting directly with the gods, where possible or where I thought other books had covered the material better. The various versions of Deities & Demigods are wonderful references in this regard. I hope this is helpful, thank you!

Thanks for the answer
Two comments. I liked the Plan of Waterr in 2e more than the one in 5e with the sea surface. Then it is basically only half a Plane of Water.
The Astral Plan in 2e had no connection to the inner planes and the Ethreal Plan. that's what the Ethreal Plan was for.

Otherwise a good bookOtherwise a good book :)

Question for the author: Are there any plans to update or revise the work now that Planescape has been released and opened up on the Vault? Or is this book considered complete as is? Thank you!

An excellent question! I believe this product to be complete so I won't be returning and updating the contents here - the Planescape setting focuses on Sigil and the Outlands anyway while only giving superficial information on the rest of the planes themselves. The Planescape release does impact another project I've been working on, Codex Appendix, which was going to be a PDF addendum adding information on the Positive Energy Plane, Negative Energy Plane, Outlands, and the Far Realm. Since the Outlands gets so much attention in the Planescape release, I'll probably cut that out of the Appendix and focus on the two energy planes and the Far Realm.

A Masterwork! I appreciate the attention to detail and the care arranging the material in easy to find pieces. The standardized format makes it like an encyclopedia. It is easy to drop it within a campaign and localize the material and add to the format.

This is an awe-inspiring project! Thanks for your amazing work! You said, "The quasi-elemental planes (Inner Planes under the influence of the Positive and Negative Energy Planes) are going to be absorbed largely into an upcoming release for the Appendices, which covers the Far Realm, Positive and Negative Energy Planes, and the Outlands." What is the status of this added content? It doesn't look to be in the TOC of this version currently and I cannot find the appendix as a separate product either. Thank you!

Thank you for the kind words! Gulp, I'll have to check the TOC on this one to make sure the Appendix contents are not included. I've got about half of the Codex Appendix completed now - which is the Negative and Positive Energy Planes specifically along with their associated elemental realms (Dust, Vacuum, Mineral, etc.), along with outlines of the Far Realm and the Outlands. It will be separate product but other projects have consumed my time lately, so I haven't been able to go back and give it all the proper treatment. It will include new monsters as well though, including bright undead (undead infused with radiant energy rather than necrotic) and some others. Look for it ... soon? I've been tinkering with it for awhile but I'll be able to focus on it soon I hope with GaryCon finally coming up this weekend. Happy gaming!

Thank you! The Encounters in the Infinite Planes series was fun to work on, but the sales weren't there to keep my focus unfortunately. That being said, I have full intentions of returning to the series, because it's a nice palate cleanser between other projects (and they fill a nice niche to be honest). I have 8 encounters mapped out for the Plane of Air ... just haven't knuckled down and fleshed them out yet!

Thanks for this great product Dave! I see you mentioned a Codex Appendix in one of the discussions. The Quasi-Elemental (knowledge on Vacuum is scarce) Planes included there in and the Outlands are the picks in particular I'm excited to see what secrets and information you release will be.
Is this available yet? In book form as well?

I posted this as a reply to another discussion instead of here too on accident if you were wondering

Thank you for your inquiry! The Codex Appendix is a project I’ve had to put on the backburner for a bit, though it remains very much alive – I have completed the write-up for the Positive Energy Plane and about half of the Negative Energy Plane, and I’ve developed good outlines for the Outlands and Far Realm. The product is likely going to clock in at around 75 to 100 pages in total, so my goal with it is to release it as a separate product rather than integrate it within the larger Codex of the Infinite Planes book – mainly because the Codex is so large already! As far as content, I’m folding the quasi-elemental planes into their respective energy plane (Positive or Negative) as discrete “zones” with their own affects and features, similar to how the Border Elemental Planes are presented. Each is theoretically infinite, but travel is possible between the adjacent elemental planes and the energy plane (Vacuum being the border of the Plane of Air and the Negative Energy Plane, for example). This is...See more

Thank you so much! It's been a labor that's for sure!

So the original Codex of the Infinite Planes entries (volumes 1 through 26) include both player options and monsters. When it came time to compile it all, I realized there was too much for a single book, so I broke off the player and monster content into their own books (Heroes of the Infinite Planes and Monsters of the Infinite Planes), both with more content than what was originally released. The gazetteer information was collected in Codex of the Infinite Planes, though I needed to add more "connective tissue" content to complete the book - information on the planes in general, portals, planar pathways (River Styx, River Oceanus, Yggdrasil), and details on the artifact itself along with a group of dedicated scholars. All of that info exists solely here. In addition, since I removed the monsters from each individual entry, I added a new section to each plane for Creatures & Denizens.

I hope this helps explain the situation!...See more

Is there anything about Sigil in this?
Reply
Customer avatar
Dave C February 16, 2022 12:35 pm UTC
CREATOR
Thank you for your interest! Unfortunately, Sigil is a firm part of the Planescape setting, so at least currently it is not available as a setting for DMsGuild content creators to reference or build upon. Similarly, the factions of Sigil fall under the same restriction. Thankfully there is still plenty of adventure content found in the infinite planes, and the Codex of the Infinite Planes includes information on several major planar hubs, such as the City of Brass on the Plane of Fire, the City of Glass on the Plane of Water, Tu'narath in the Astral Plane, Mithrendain the Autumn City on the Plane of Faerie, Signpost in the Beastlands, Madhouse in Pandemonium, among others. I hope this helps!

CREATOR
Thank you for your inquiry! I would say this compiled Codex collection is mostly system agnostic - each plane gets an overview of the features and hazards, which is where the game system material is located, but overall it's a small component of each entry. The denizens, interesting sites, adventure hooks, highlights, lay of the land, and travel information would be relevant to ANY game featuring these planes of existence. And for 3.5, I would say most of it could be converted rather easily depending on the difficulty you wanted to convey (adjusting save DCs and damage for appropriate hazards, for example). The Codex of the Infinite Planes artifact is found in the Epic Level Handbook, though the version depicted in this codex is different (and again, I think overall very convertible to 3.5). I hope this helps, thank you again!

Wow, thanks for the quick reply, Dave! Does the Codex have quasi-elementals and para-elementals? They were ignored in 3.5. If so, how hard would they be to convert to 3.5? I always thought they offered a nice break from the standard four elementals that most of the players know too well. :-D Do you think they would be hard to convert than, say, Pathfinder versions?

No problem! When I compiled the list of planes, I debated on how to handle the para-elemental planes (intersection between each Inner Plane) and the quasi-elemental planes (intersection between each Inner Plane and the Negative and Positive Plane). Ultimately, for my sanity and the sake of getting it all done, I lumped the para-elemental planes together into the Border Elemental Planes and moved the quasi-elemental planes off to the side. Right now, I'm working on the Codex Appendix (which will be a separate product), which is going to include the Positive and Negative Energy Planes, the Outlands, and the Far Realm. I'm working the quasi-elemental planes into regions of each Positive and Negative Energy Plane for the sake of organization and content. That isn't to say you couldn't have them be their own separate planes, though their general lack of features makes it difficult to incorporate into a setting I've found.

My portrayal of the Border Elemental Planes (the para-elemental planes) looks at...See more

Hi Dave,

Is there any way to bundle the "Codex of" and "Monsters of" titles for those of us who have the previous separated volumes? I have all of the previous volumes except Ysgard, and I know that this title and the "Monsters of" title has most of the same info, but I don't want to miss out on any edits or additional work you've put into these single PDF compilations (plus it would be nice to have them in single themed books for quick reference instead of having 26+ documents). I just can't justify spending another $40ish when I would be essentially re-paying for around 75% of the content.

I am about to go pick up "Heroes of" though, since that seems to be all new!

First, thank you for your support! I knew I wanted a big compilation of all the codex entries once I had finished designing them all, though I didn't exactly know the form it would take. It was never my intention to leave customers who had purchased the individual entries out in the cold, there just isn't a way for me to do anything directly. However, I still have options! Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
