SpaceFaring Jellyfish - A D&D 5E Playable Race

As of this writing, it is an *exceptionally* exciting time for D&D players. Books that have deeply added to the game have been continually released, and even more are being teased. Only Wizards of the Coast can know for sure, but it’s my bet that we’re in for more renovations of classics and additional race options… in future months.

While we wait, let’s limber up our imaginations and just have some fun… and to that end, I present to you something modeled on Earth’s jellyfish or Portuguese man o’war and flavored with a little Sci Fi spice:

The idea behind this is neat. I like the concept of star traveling, drifting jellyfish with an innate 3D sense of direction. But the details seem a little "off":

* Jellyfish are usually seen as being wispy, fragile/weak things. But the PC race gives them a small increase in Strength and natural armor. Seemed an odd choice.

* Poison tentacles make some sense since since cnidarians have poison barbs. But the text cross-references their ability to Yuan Ti stats in Volo's Guide, without giving details. Which isn't really helpful since Volo's isn't a core book. Wouldn't it make more sense to give them an ability copying the effect of the Poison Spray cantrip which is OGL material? Alternately, since the effect is really a touch effect, maybe natural ability duplicating Shocking Grasp cantrip (but with a poison keyword instead of electricity) would make sense.

* Also, I really liked the idea that they were expert navigators due to their natural environment. But...See more

Thanks for purchasing!

These are solid suggestions; I really mean that.

Some things I can't comment on because of DMsGuild regulations (as I discovered), but there is a reason they are that way. That said, I like switching to referencing Poison Spray because it might be easier (since this is a homebrew race, it's already non-core, so referencing Volo's over the PHB isn't that big of a deal in and of itself to me).

Also, focusing in on navigation would be a good fit although, tbh, since there's no "navigation" skill and no officially released setting here on DMsGuild that might offer official mechanics along that line, I wasn't able to dig into that at this time. I'm hoping to be able to in the future.

I hope you can enjoy and modify as you wish for now and to be able to tweak as future books are released.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
