... The tracks looks like dragging-marks and they continues into the rosehip bushes covering the riverbank. 30 meters upstream you can see a small broken raft between the bushes. It’s been dragged up onto the riverbank many years ago and layed to rest under a very old willowtree. As you lean over the railing to have a closer look, you suddently notice a brand new chain running from beneath the raft and into the water…! In that instant the wind changes and a foul smell reaches your nostrils…!

( Let PC, ”Moldy”, roll a DC15/”Wisdom ( Perception )-Check” with Advantage!

Success: As the wind changes, Moldy suddently notice a foul stench he has smelled so many times before. The unmistakable odor of his favored enemy – Troll!

”Moldy” is not caught ”Suprised” in the next round ).

Suddently the chain under the raft upstream is pulled tight and the raft is lifted up by a huge force and trown into the river. A huge Troll, with long limps and slimy hair rises from the mud…

( Let PC, ”Moldy”, roll a DC10/”Intelligence-Check” with Advantage!

Success: Through his experience with Troll-kin PC, ”Moldy”, identify his favored enemy as a very old female River-Troll or more commonly known as a ”Scrag”. She looks sick and exausted ).

The old Scrag roars loudly and suddently pulls the chain hard with her enormous claws. The chain runs clear of the water all the way to the old iron ring in the bridge-wall behind you and sweep across the platform with a loud clinking sound until its stretched out along the riverbank.

( The PC’s is caught by ”Surprise” – exept ”Moldy” if he succeded his earlier Wisdom ( Perception )-roll. The PC’s caught by suprise must roll a DC15/”Dexterity ( Acro-batics )-check”.

Succes: The PC manages to duck under or jump over the chain as it is stretched out along the platform.

Fail: The PC is caught by the chain as it stretches out along the platform and the PC is hurled into the river and dragged along by the current towards the huges River Mirar.  The unlucky PC have ten rounds to get out of the current by succeding a DC20/”Strength ( Athletics)-check” - or the PC is washed out into the River Mirar never to be seen again! )

The Scrag roars once again and hurles herself through the mud towards you!

( It takes the River-Troll 6 rounds to get to the pier-wall and 1 additional round to climp up onto the platform. PC, ”Moldy”, gain a +2 bonus to both ranged and hand to hand attacks, because of his ”Favored Enemy”-Feature ).

As the Scrag’s approaching fast, you notice that she limps heavily on her left leg and when she reaches the pier-wall you can se that the chain is attached to her left ankle. As the Srag rips appart the railing on the pier with her huge claws and starts to climp up onto the platform, you can see that the skin on her entire left side, including her face and left eye, is deformed and heavely burned – probably from a battle-encounter long time ago. Despite her deformaties the Scrag moves suprisingly agile and soon stands up-right in front of you on the platform. She roars again…

( From the few words PC, ”Moldy”, knows in ”Giant”-language, he recognizes af few words in her roar: ”No bind me!” )

As her deafening roar echoes under the bridge, she attacks…

Welcome to "The Marsh" - Part 1 of the adventure "Outposts".

Throw your PC's into the frozen trails through the wastelands of the north. Here in the wild, nature is ruthless and the coming winter is rolling down from The Spine of the World - But out here lurkes the mystery that haunts your mind and soul.

This adventure was originally made for a party of three players but with a little adaptation the story should work fine with two, four or five players as well. I think you will enjoy the settings, PC- and NPC- characters and the twists and turns in this investigation-like adventure taking place in the northern frontiers of Farún.

I have chosen to start the adventure by setting the stage in three background stories that your group should use in the creation of their characters. I made the adventure for three of my old male friends, but feel free to change the gender, names, classes and so on as you see fit.

If you do not want to use them as PC’s you can addabt the three to NPC's and get their background stories to life trough interaction with your group. With an experienced GM that should work fine as well...

This is pretty much a one-lined story, but there will be some small optional quests, divergent choises and interesting NPC’s that can help you to improvise lots of detours from the original quest. In the final pages you will also find two homebrewed tables – A “Hunting”-table and a “Random Encounter”-table that you can use as you move along.

This adventure was actualy my first dungeon master creation more than 20 years ago. I found it in a box some years back and I am now in the process of further development, poliching details and translating the whole thing into english - English is not my first language, so please bare with me for any misspellings, odd gramma or clumsy choise of words.

Translating is a very time-consuming task for me, and my daughters takes most of my time. Therefore I have chosen to break up my adventure into smaller parts and release them as I progress – "The Marsh", is the first release of 5 in the "Outposts"-Adventure.

– Good luck :O)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
