Targeted Point Build & Back-story

This Character Creation method generates a characters stats based on a player's choice of class and background with a random element thrown in.

It also gives players a number of background events linked to an increase in a stat that they can flesh out into a history.

Basic outline:

All stats start at 8. Class gives 3 pts for a recommended highest stat, 2 pts for the next highest and 1pt for saves. Each proficiency gives a +1 to the relevant stat and a random +1 (weighted towards the initial stat). This gives a 75pt point build character, targeted towards what a player wants their character to be.

All classes and backgrounds from the PHB are included, but following these rules any class or background from other publications (or home-brew) can be used to generate targeted stats.

EDIT: Included spell casting (since you use your proficency bonus for spell attacks) and slight re-word to put points taking a stat over 20 into the lowest stat.

EDIT2: More tables added, formatting updated with some options and a link embedded in the document to a google sheets version that will do as much dice rolling, lookups and math as you want it to.

Note: The Proficiency tables can be used outside of this method of generation to simply create some random life-events for starting characters.

This is an interesting product that retools the point buy system of character generation to facilitate building a specific character concept. Rather than determining stats, then building the rest of the character, Blanchard has built a system that uses [...]

The Good: This is an extremely interesting alternative means of character building. I'm one of those people who enjoys the option of randomizing through interesting and creative tables--it challenges me to think in new ways or adapt to [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
