TOTEM OF THE DUCK

Primal Path Extension of the Totem Warrior

for the Barbarian Class

In the final arc of Critical Role's first campaign, actor Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite, Blades of Glory) was awesome enough to come guest for a couple of episodes. When I sat with him in advance to make his character, he settled on a charismatic Half-Orc Bard/Barbarian named Lionel Gayheart. When I asked which Primal Path Lionel wished to walk, he felt drawn to the Path of the Totem Warrior. When I presented the animals he could choose from, he simply asked me this inspired question: "Can my totem animal... be a duck?" From this was born this majestic build you see before you, now refined for general use!

Some warriors choose to take on the deep, spiritual journey of connecting with the natural creatures of the realm, letting the ascestrial knowledge of their chosen totem spirit to guide them through their worldly trials. This broad array of noble beasts eagerly bestow their ancient lessons unto the barbarian who binds their strength to their animalistic essense. Others instead discover the impossibly powerful majesty of the duck, eshewing the influence of inferior inspirations and instead devoting their strength and attention to these incredible beaked sentinels of ponds across the realms, in return being granted supernatural skill and ability in the image of their feathered patrons.

Others still may just be ducks themselves turned into people.

Regardless of the journey that has led a rage-fueled engine of destructon to discover the endless might and wisdom of these billed beasts that protect the planes, the rewards that lay in wait for those who prove their tenacity and will to their quacking masters shall be remembered as guardians of legend, flapping forces of nature whose deeds carve a bloody (and quite loud) path of glory through the ages to come. Inspired by the creative inquiries of actor Jon Heder in the development of the majestic Half-Orc Barbarian Lionel Gayheart, you too can now harness this unstoppable source of power.

Quack quack, mother ****er.

So I just got to the episodes with Lionel in them, did Matt change the reaction in the duck totem because in the stream i'm pretty sure he reduces damage taken instead of imposing disadvantage?

This primal path works perfectly with the Polymorphed background in Xanathar's Lost Notes to Everything Else.

If my players don't pick this, I'm going to create an NPC just for it. I couldn't stop laughing at the Ducktemic Attunement ability though. I'd use it even with minimum Cha just for the comedic value!

Loved it, just watched episodes 99&100.
Just thinking about the imagery of a flapping duck. It doesnt need to hit to be intimidating. It just needs to be in your face. Why not limit the range to 5' and require line of sight without the need for a melee hit. Still forgo one atk. The target will still needs to fail a wis sv. And so shouldnt be to op at lvl 14.

True, but its only REALLY intimidating after you've effectively wounded them! Imagine the blinding white flash of sharp pain rocking your body from a weapon blow, only to have your eyes refocus in time to see the wielder of that weapon quacking and flailing loudly!

Thanks for sharing! Quick copy-edit (sorry, it's what I do for a living):

- First paragraph, "ascestrial" should be "ancestrial"
- First paragraph, "essense" is "essence" unless you're
- Second para, "eshewing" is "eschewing" (and that's a really, really long sentence)
- Third para, arguably "ducks themselves" is redundant
- Fifth para, "you, too, can now harness..." - needs commas
- Feathered Spirit, "...totem spirit and gain its feature." I assume you want "features" here?
- Aspect of the Mallard, "...resistance to acid damage, as the..." don't need the comma there
- Ducktemic Attunement, "...The creature must succeed on an Wisdom..." a, not an

Once again, thanks so much for sharing! The boyfriend and I had a great laugh over this.

Just one point. Its 6th level ability grants no penalty when moving underwater basically granting a swim speed. Would it possibly be better to change it to grants swim speed equal to walking speed. Sorry for saying this. Guess I'll Duck out.

Really like this one. A few small corrections I noticed:

In the Spirit Seeker feature, "bcast sense" should be replaced by "beast sense" and "speak with animaIs" (there is a capital "I" instead of a lower case "L" in the word animals) should be replaced with "speak with animals".

In the Aspect of the Mallard feature, "At 6th leveI" should be replaced by "At 6th level" (again, there is a capital "I" instead of a lower case "L", but this time in the word level).

In the Spirit Walker feature, "At 10th level." should be replaced with "At 10th level," (replace period with a comma).

In the Ducktemic Attunement feature, "you can replace one" should be replaced by "you can forgo one".

Good looking out! The copy function for formatting from some PDFs makes for an awkward transition, hehe.

I know these mistakes all too well! Part of the reason why I've abandoned most of my PDFs in favor of Handy Dandy DnD Beyond when it comes to copying the text and formatting of the published materials.

Looking at the latest version of this PDF just now, it looks like you've fixed almost all of it. I'm still seeing "animals" in the Spirit Seeker feature spelled with a capital "i" instead of a lower case "L" (the font used for these comments really isn't making it easy to illustrate this error >_<). Also, in the Aspect of the Mallard feature, the beginning should read "At 6th level," instead of "At 6th level." (the period should be replaced by a comma).

Matt, I love it! My next Barbarian, if the GM consents, will be Duck-based.

One small edit...under Ducktemic Attunement, it sounds as if you're encouraging people NOT to choose Duck. "Don't be a ****. Choose the Duck." Thanks!

Looks awesome! I think it'd be great for a lighthearted one-shot.

You might need a small edit, it is the word "Mallard," with 2 l's.

It is awesome! Keep up the entertainment!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
