Character Kit: Invoker

Not all who serve the gods are given a choice.

With these variant class options for the cleric, you can bear the responsibility handed to you directly from the gods. In the time of the Dawn War, the gods forged powerful covenants that imbued mortals with a fragment of divine power...regardless of whether said mortals were willing vessels. As worship of these gods spread in the days after these wars, the institutions that ordained clerics eliminated much of the need the gods had for these covenants.

When peril arises, when the clergy is measured and found wanting, or when the machinations of the scheming divinites demands it, these old covenants are invoked once again and mortals are raised to power. Channeling divine power with precious little training, these Invokers are tasked with keeping faith through one of the following covenants:

Covenant of Ardor - These zealots keep alive the flame of faith, spuring others to work the will of the gods.

Covenant of Preservation - These guardians protect the lives of the faithful, using their power to keep safe those willing to serve heavenly powers.

Covenant of Wrath - These instruments of divine punishment are tools of righteous anger, metting out justice as the chosen hands of the gods.

Hello! Thanks for your wonderful work, I really needed to convert quickly my Invoker from 4e to 5e and you helped me to keep my character alive.
I just have some questions, because I don't think I understand how to replace/modify cleric features with the invoker features in the right way. I apologize in advance and I hope to write everything as clearly as I can.

So, if I understood correctly, a invoker gets Destroy Undead at level 5th and Divine Intervention at level 10th, same as clerics. Is it correct?

Also I have doubts about covenants and domains: every level 8th covenant ability states that "this ability replaces the 8th level feature from your domain". So... Are you supposed to choose a covenant AND a domain?
If you choose just a covenant, you don't get any ability at level 6th and level 17th, though at lower levels you have a +1 charge of Channel Divinity and another Channel Divinity effect at level 11th. It seems a fair tradeoff, but it feels like you don't...See more

As soon as I get time in the future to make updates to my catalog, clarifying these issues has been added to the to-do list.

Destroy Undead and Divine Intervention work as normal for a cleric.

Purifying Flames does contain a typo, it should be an 11th level ability.

The intent for Covenants is that these are in addition to a domain and that the 8th level ability of the covenant replaces the normal 8th level ability of a cleric. You gain channel divinity options from both your domain and your covenant.

The Invoker has a much more limited selection of spells compared to clerics and a number of abilities that require avoiding heavy armors. In exchange, they get more Channel Divinity options and more daily uses of them.

My sincerest apologies for not catching your questions sooner. I've taken on a number of professional projects outside DMsGuild, so for the moment my work here has reduced visibility to me. Feel free to reach out on Twitter if you have...See more

Thank you so much for your explanation! After a more careful reading of your document and talking for a bit with my DM about the doubts I had, we came to the same conclusion.
Thanks again for your reply!

Hey dude! BasiliskOnline over on twitter, here.

So starting off, i love the flavor and implementation of this, i much prefer spontaneous casters so much more than prepared casters and i think you have a very solid concept and a really great production quality.

--Sacrosanct Theurgy--
This concerns me, itd be exceptionally easy for a lvl 1 Invoker to maintain an AC 20. (Wis +4, Studded Leather 12, Shield, even with a dex of zero you are looking at 18) most people would grab Dex as a secondary with this option. Id either consider shifting this to temp hp, or reducing it (maybe equal to the spell slot cast, no higher than you wis modifier) or make it not useful with a shield.

--ARDOR--
--- incite Fervor---
wording is weird, Crusaders mantle does not get more powerful at higher level uses, and since this ability doesnt expend a spell slot, the whole descriptions seems needlessly complicated.
“You may cast the spell Crusader’s Aura as a bonus action...See more

I love "Happy Fun Hour," and it has been very interesting to hear some of the thought that has gone into the official products. I generally agree with Mearls on the issue you raise, but feel that while Channel Divinity is a limited resource in terms of its regeneration, the options that it fuels are generally not used as frequently as they recharge because those class features are situationally useful. The additional Channel Divinities for the Invoker were my attempt to change that and provide enough options that you are expending Channel Divinity as often as it recharges. This may be a result of my particularly gameplay experience, but I don't feel like given the abundance of other options there is a strong impetus to modify this particular aspect of my design.

I think a shield restriction and limiting the bonus to the spell slot (no higher than wis modifier) is sensible without compromising the intent of the feature.

I'll attempt to clarify the language of the features you...See more

I dont necessarily think it needs a shield restriction AND limiting bonus to spell slot, i think one or other would prove more than balancing!

Incite Fervor: Oh! I totally missed that "a" in there which changed up the reading comprehension there. GO GO ME. Though id perhaps mention "whenever you cast an invoker spell using your highest level spell slot..." it would keep people with (apparently) poor reading comprehension from making the same assumption i did and would conform with most of what i see for magic using class features (and how its handled via multiclassing)

Verbiage suggestions (mostly to keep in line with established norms):
- Preservers rebuke:
-- you can use your reaction to force the triggering creature to make a dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC, on a failed save the creature takes 1d10 of the same type of damage of the triggering attack or half as much damage on a successful one.

-offering mercy:

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
