Who's Who... and Who's What

Everyone slides through Sigil sooner or later. But plenty of cutters call the Cage home, and it's their shops, trades, and peels that keep the jink flowing - and the bone-boxes flapping. A body's got to know who sells bogus goods, and who'll scrag him (or worse) just for the fun of it. 'Course, the trick is telling friend from foe. In Sigil, a fiery fiend ain't always a serpent, and a shining celestial ain't always a lamb.

This 128-page book provides Dungeon Masters with details on over 40 intriguing characters and groups found in Sigil, ready for immediate use in any Planescape campaign. Each entry features history, motivation, and secrets, along with complete game statistics and brand-new, full-color art. What's more, the stories are woven together throughout, creating a rich tapestry of relationships that brings Sigil alive. Among the unforgettable characters in these pages are:

  • Fell, the dabus who turned his back on the Lady of Pain.
  • Farrow, a shadow elf spy with 15 personalities - one for each faction.
  • Alluvius Ruskin, an old tiefling who sells keys for every portal imaginable.
  • Djhek'nlarr, a githyanki who dares map the Lady's dread Mazes
  • The Will of the One, a gang of Signers out to revive a dead god.

Meet your neighbors - before they meet you!

Product History

Uncaged: Faces of Sigil by Ray Vallese is a textbook example of how to make a NPC-focused game supplement that thematically matches the campaign setting. The city of Sigil, floating hub of the infinite planes, is a swamp of interconnected plots, shifting allegiances, and secret promises. This supplement to the Planescape line echoes the city's themes by creating a collection of 40 NPCs and groups who are similarly woven together by secrets and alliances. The result is a tapestry of interesting personalities that can be easily dropped into a game as a minor character or a major NPC, all of them loaded down with plot hooks for further adventure.

Do I Know You? Each detailed NPC includes game statistics, roleplaying tips, combat tips, history, motivations, secrets, and connections to other NPCs in the book. Brand new, full-color art illustrates each NPC. There are NPCs detailed from all walks of life, from the titan Zadara, the secret investor behind many a shady business expedition, to The Us, a swarm of cranium rats that has achieved terrifying power and wisdom.

The Ties That Bind. An appendix gives further information about other individuals and organizations in Sigil that might be of interest. Several pages of quick plot hooks are illustrated with diagrams that details each NPC who might be involved in the plot. A final page details at a glance where in the city each NPC might be found.

Focused and Complete. Uncaged: Faces of Sigil does just one thing - mapping the nebulous social intricacies of Sigil - but it does that thing very, very well. This is a book well worth reading.

About the Creators. Ray Vallese was employed as a games editor and developer at TSR between 1994-1997, primarily working on the Planescape line. Nowadays he is a freelance editor.

Can't comment on the difference in quality between standard and premium, but I just got the premium version and I'm thrilled. The illustrations look almost the same as the original (I used to own it) and while some of the text is *slightly* fuzzy if you get right up in it, it reads fine and is barely noticeable (there is no blurry text on the left-hand side for me). The pages have full bleeds and the production overall looks almost as good as the original version. I would hazard a guess that the people complaining about print quality are used to buying books reproduced from actual print PDFs and not printed from scans. Regardless, this is as good as you're going to get for the amount you're paying and IMHO it's great value.

Purchased the premium versión. I don't think the quality is up to what supposedly has to be. Text no so crisp in many pages and colors seems to be a bit faded some pages. Bad alignment and a border due to that in the printed document. Do not buy, as DTRPG/DMs Guild won't fix the issue and they just address you to contact with WotC.

Is the premium color that much better? Has anybody seen both?

I have yet to see a softcover title receive a hardcover option if it didn't already have one.

Planescape in print?! It's a berk's lucky day. What are the chances of the more Planescape POD books? A premium hardcover option for each boxset would be awesome. I'll be ordering this just to support the increased availability of the Planescape POD line.

Probably my favorite Planescape book for the art and the unique description of each NPC. Lots of fluff. Factol's manifesto and Planewalker's handbook also are pretty rad. Factol's for the fluff and hooks. Planewalkers because Cook tries to condense the setting into a book. Good work indeed.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
