Thank you for the jousting mechanics! An off hand comment during a session about a nearby jousting tournament turned into me having to come up with a jousting tournament in a week, and this really helped bring it to life. It is well thought out, from the mechanics to the flair like catching a thrown lance.
However, I found it hard to translate these rules into a kind of "flow chart" so I know what do for each tilt. Maybe adding a step-by-step guide to this so it is easier for the DM to know how to run each tilt would be easier. Thanks!

I love the system you put together for jousting. It has been a great time playing with it.
I have a few questions. When would a lance break and thus need replacing? When a roll is under a certain threshold denoting a badly aimed blow? Perhaps above a number to show the great force behind the blow? Or at random on a hit?
You have rules to govern a double knockdown but I don't see how that can happen since the first being knocked down can't make their attack. Is there more information on this?
Thanks again for this great addition to the game!

Had a player challenge a knight to a joust just before the session ended last week. Was really happy to find this to make it more interesting. Should definitely enhance the session.

However, I'm a little confused about calculating the attack bonus because of how it's worded. Is the total bonus Strength + Weapon Proficiency Bonus + Wisdom + Animal Handling Skill Proficiency bonus (if trained)?

Basically what I'm asking is whether the Wisdom bonus should be added? You only refer to the "proficiency bonus" in the guide.

Same thing with the initiative. You refer to it as a proficiency bonus only, rather than an ability check.

Justin. Apologies for the long delay in replying. I've been away from the site for several months.

I agree this is poorly phrased, I'll look into releasing an improved version 1.1 which includes all the feedback I've had from customers and friends. In answer to your specific questions, after reviewing the document and my playtest notes I suggest the following answers (which you may of course adapt to your own needs).

The attack bonus should include your Proficiency Bonus for Weapons and Animal Handling and your wisdom modifier for the Animal Handling Check. For example, at first level, if you are proficent in the Lance and Animal Handling (which any participant should be!!) and your wisdom modifier is +1 then you attack bonus would be:

Lance(+2) + Animal Handling (+2) + Wis (+1) = +5.

The strength modifier IS however used within the damage calculation.

As to your second question, re initiative - yes include Wisdom.

Just wanted to say that I think this is fantastic. I was trying to come up with an alternative opener for Curse of Strahd and a spooky joust intended to impress the lady of the house is altogether too perfect. These rules are simple and interesting, and they give my players something else to build towards in case I try to run another joust in the future. Specifically excited about running an NPC from down the road as a black knight who'll knock one of the PC's on their XXX. Really build up the hate for later. Thank you for this outline. Great stuff.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
