I ran this one year at DragonCon and really enjoyed it. I loved the amount of material that did not involve combat, it's still D&D so there was plenty of fighting. If the players have played the earlier missions, even better. My players picked up on the easter eggs and decided how to handle the situation based on the people they had met in earlier scenarios. Great stuff.

"Bound by Duty" has alot of enjoyable material in it; a rich story- and one that is refreshingly different. There were alot of different encounters designed in the adventure. Time constraints will end up doing the adventure and the players a disservice by having to glean over encounters that would allow for RP-heavy players. There is plenty of combat options to provide. My players were a little disappointed that the ghost ship did not offer much in the way of exploration. It can be played a few times over and with different endings. I would certainly run this again! I did see that the editing team was also associated with 'Down the River of Snakes' so I do not find it surprising that it would give you similar replayability and enjoyability. Another great work by Jay Africa. A must buy!

By far my favourite module to DM in the trilogy (with no disrespect to the other two, this one is just really awesome in my book).

As a DM who really likes RP-ing, here are a few of my favourite things about the module:

  1. This is probably the first time I've seen a module that presents the table with potentially conflicting objectives. Depending on which factions are presents on the table, there could be a situation where half of the table wants the wedding to succeed, and the other half trying to make it fall through. Plus, they might also have different objectives that they have to try to prioritise. Do you save the fireworks? Do you save the weapons? Would you go out of your way to protect the crew members? Furthermore, this also incentivise the players to RP amongst themselves, especially if they are aware of their conflicting goals. It is a very refreshing idea.
  2. Yay for multiple RP-ing opportunities! You have the freedom to interact with any NPC in any point of the adventure, and how you interact with them will have its effect towards the ending of this adventure. The module also provides a lot of leads to draw the players' attention and want to speak to the NPCs. Quoting my table, "Guys, we're in a Nick Sparks movie!"
  3. The combat encounters have a lot of callback to previous adventures, Wobbles from CCC-YLRA01-02, Walharrow II from DDEX1-9, the ghost ship to the whole S1 storyline. It's a great nod to previous lore events, and I happen to be a DM who DM-ed the whole Tyranny of Dragons series. Many of them also pose a good challenge, not in the traditional sense of swarming the players with powerful monsters, but creating situations that forces the players to split the party, even just momentarily.
  4. Jay Africa played at my table. Yup, the author of this very module was playing at my table. Adding that to my CV right now. ("I don't remember writing in stuff that deals 19 damage!")

Nitpick: As an authentic Chinese, I, uh, wasn't particularly fond about the names of the Shou NPCs, especially the crew members. Or I'm just being too sensitive. Anyways.

Jay is one of my favorite writers of D&D modules. He always creates intriguing, fast-paced, compelling stories, NPCs, and combats.

One of my favorite elements is that the PCs are given different specific tasks in addition to the overall goal... and some of those tasks compete with one another. It's so fun watching the players slowly figure out that they are at odds and letting them figure out how they are going to prioritize and work together. Its an added layer of depth that you don't always see in these kinds of modules, and it's really well done.

There's a ton to work with in this mod, and it's open-ended enough that the PCs' activities have a significant impact on the outcome (something else you don't always see in mods like this). I've seen or heard about several different sessions of this adventure, and every single one has turned out incredibly different. I really love that; it gives the players the feeling that they are actually having an impact on the events, not that they are being railroaded to a set conclusion.

Get this module. You won't be disappointed.

Of the AL Ylraphon modules currently available, this one is the best. A fast-paced, interesting sea voyage adventure of with great roleplaying opportunities and political intrigues, customizable encounters, and great mechanics for how the PCs run their ship. If you've bought any of the others, you should pick this one up right away.
