DDAL07-04 A Walk in the Park (5e)

2nd in the 'The Jungle has Fangs' trilogy. The adventure serves as a plot device rather than a standalone adventure, In the first section there is an optional chase scene, which is the only way to get anywhere near the 2 hour run time, my party had a lot of fun with the chase. The difficulty level of the encounters is very low, expect to use the very strong option for all but the weakets parties, I had to add extra enemies to create any sort of challenge.

The shop encounter needs to be modified to provide any sort of logic as to how the main NPC is to meet the party, I had him locked inside a cupboard under the counter, a couple of characters freed him while the rest of the party distracted the owner, otherwise it just does not work.

The final section is also quite illogical, my party just simply would NOT walk into an encampment that is known to have enemies somewhere in it without a LOT of encouragement from the NPC.

Its not bad when taken as part of the whole, but probably the weakest of the trilogy.

Winters Flame is Ryan Wheaton's first AL adventure and it is a cracker (pardon the pun...).

Writing a midwinter themed adventure must be very daunting but this adventure hits all the best elements, its VERY RP heavy, my players had a blast with the midway style games and the NPC security crew, the Snowmen, gave rise to some funny moments, you can really channel your inner keystone cop (god I'm old) if you want to.

The main plot is excellent, unfortunately my lot figured out the main themes pretty quickly and it ran WAAAAY short, I would give a max of 1.5 hours unless your party is heavily into RP.

If this is his first, Im looking forward to many many more quality adventures from Mr Wheaton.

DDAL07-03 A Day at the Races (5e)

A day at the races is an absolute hoot, my party loved it, it is a skill based module with plenty of RP and only 1 short combat. The characters get to race dinosaurs! And fly dinousaurs!

Keeping the race exciting and engaging was my hardest challenge, I had to fudge a little with the pursuing teams to make them relevant, otherwise it would have been a cakewalk. The only thing I wasnt keen on was the underwater section, it is too easy for the party to get a long way ahead if they are clever, this could make the finale race dissapointing, which is something I wanted to avoid.

This is the first module in the 'Jungle has fangs' trilogy and the rest of the adventures look equally interesting.

Excellent adventure but can be VERY tough if a certain selection is made, definitely has an easy and hard mode. The adventure is the conclusion to DDAL05-13 Jarl rising and closes the story off well.

There are plenty of RP opportunities and a good mix of combat, heartily recommend.

City on the edge is the introductory adventure for the Tomb of Annihilation story season, it consists of 5 linked adventures revolving round the recovery of an item thought to be related to the death curse.

The 5 adventures introduce many of the main groups and NPC's related to Port Nyanzaru and it is an ideal adventure to start the campaign with. There is a good mix of RP and combat with nicely fleshed out NPC's although I particularly hated the way the Harper rep Soggy Wren is depicted so I changed it, playing a drunk is amusing for a couple of minutes, it gets old fast...

Definitely recommend as a starter for your Tomb of Annihilation campaign.

On the whole a decent adventure, nice variety in encounters with a few to hold in reserve if you are not short of time (although it is spelled out clearly that running extra encounters gives no extra rewards). My only quibble is the 'Challenge of Blots Notes' section is in part 3, it should have been at the start of part 2, having it in part 3 is illogical.

I would run this adventure again, it gives a nice lead in to the final tier 2 adventure Hartkillers Horn (DDAL05-17)

Absolutely excellent adventure!

Plenty of options as there are numerous traps and encounters that can be used as alternatives for the ones in the standard adventure, the traps are particularly good, my party failed to find any of them and suffered greatly! The encounters offer plenty of variation and are well thought out.

For the more lore/rp based party I could see this adventure running VERY long as it is chock full of the history of the giants, but it also works well for a more dungeon crawly type of party.

The fina lecounter is VERY tough for a party at the lower end of the level scale, I had to back off a bit otherwise they would not have survived.

First rate!

Excellent adventure, most combats can resolved by RP means so its not just a hack and slash. The party have to rescue a young giant to prevent a war, there are plenty of RP opportunities in the module, and some excellent NPC's.

Enjoy

I really enjoyed this adventure, its not your average module the party has to take a more measured approach as running in swords blazing will result in disaster lol.

The encounters can be difficult for a group near the 5th level mark but at higher levels the party should be just fine.

On the whole a great adventure.

This module is pretty tough on your party, there are a number of traps in here with pretty arbitrary triggers, its set up for 5 8th level characters and they will find it pretty damaging. I have no problem with puzzle based traps if there is a logical way of working them out, they dont have to be particularly hard, just give a clue or two.

Went through it in under 2 hours, the timing is pretty spot on unless you have a large party.

Old school Dungeoneering.
