While the adventure has interesting set-up, it often lacks quite a bit of guidance and detail. I would have liked to have more information about characters, for example:

  • Is the Baron close to his mother? Can she be used for leverage with the Baron?
  • Does the Baron have an ideology? What is his long-term goal?
  • Who hired the assassin?

I also had to rewrite Xorn's cage to make it lined with metal, so that it would not flee its cell (as the floor and walls have been described to be made out of rock which Xorn could easily leave).

I have very curious and engaged players and having more information helps to get through the session with as much ease as possible. The barebones structure of the adventure tantalizes, yet does not satisfy.

I absolutely loved this adventure and so did the players! Small elements and their placement made for a very simple set up and execution on short notice for a spooky one shot! The organization of the adventure was so easy to follow but brought in sights, sounds and smells (genius). I would play this adventure again and highly recommend it.

This adventure is very atmospheric and thought-provoking - even the potential implications for the rest of the campaign are intriguing. The NPCs are fleshed out, the maps are good, the adventure reveals are great.

It is a straight forward and enjoyable adventure.

The good:

  • The initial setup within the tavern provides just the right amount of events for the PCs to interact with.
  • The adventure progression is intuitive and logical.
  • The maps and encounters combine to make a very believable structure
  • The combat tracker was quite convenient.

The bad:

  • The tunnel, which only has the isometric map, does not match the description in the pdf with regards to size.
  • The comedic encounters in the first basement level are nice, but stacking two of them back to back gives that floor a tone that is quite different from the other two.
  • The final arena scene is a bit of a mess. There is no reason for the PCs to actually engage in the baron's fight. The room is so small that they can easily reach and attack him directly in the first turn. If the room was a little larger and there was some kind of hinderance between the PCs and the barron it would work better. The whole bit with the assassin just charging to her scripted death is very forced, and since there is not a part of the story where the PCs get invested in her cause, it is largely pointless. Either cutting out the assassin all together or reworking the initial encounter with her in the inn so that they have the chance to learn about her without giving away that it is the baron she is after would shore it up.

This is overall a fun adventure and it is obvious that the author put care and thought into designing it.

5 out of 5!

Well written, excellent setting and how the adventure takes off running keeping the party on their toes was my favorite part of DM'ing this adventure!

Great starter adventure. My gang ate it up. We're a dozen sessions on and they're still fretting about the broader campaign implications of this module. Well done. Recommended!

Selected this as my very first GM one-shot. Had a party of 6 PCs of lvl 3, so I decided to add few bits here and there - namely a trap on the tavern level in the hallway to the tunnels. The party managed to get through and kill Baron without a short rest, although I do not think I should've put in more monsters than I did - they just rolled really well and Baron was unable to hit anyone in 3 rounds of combat while suffering 2 crits from ranger. Just one of those days ;)

After checking the amount of silver available to feed the Xorn, they decided to long rest and dispatch the Xorn so he does not go terrorize the village (I have indicated before that he can break through the cage). They actually managed to kill the Xorn (again, rolling shitty with Bane on Xorn) but lost one PC in the process.

Now I have 5 man party, 6th coming in as reinforcements, the barbarian is actually now cursed with Lycanthropy and I am wondering what quest will they take on. Either continue to pursue the main quest they have been sent on by their adventurer's giuld, or investigate who was Baron working for and why.

I can already see this adventure would be great one-session hook for Curse of Strahd.

Dropped this beauty into my homebrew campaign with five Lvl 5 players. We are halfway through after one session, and it's been a blast so far. Listening to them try to figure out what the 'twist' was and then springing it on them was a delight. They all really enjoyed it so far and are eager to continue. Great buy!

So just finished running this module via PbF over at RPGGeek. Five Stars.. Period. The maps are amazing! The flow is wonderful. Contains a lot of really good flavor text. (Found one stat-block typo, listed it under the discussion comments.)

Ran it as part of an ongoing campaign, I stuck it out in the woods and changed the name to Dragon's Breath Outpost, but other than that ran it as is. The players cleared out the Baron and ended up giving the Tavern to Mitchy. After they took all the valuables of course.. LOL. The players were 3rd level and I chose the wererat option over the werewolves. They had an easy time of it, had to up the final encounter to compensate. When I run it again, I will stick to the werewolves.

My favorite aspect of the module was the level of detail given to the "wholeness" of the setting. The servants had quarters, there are bathrooms, etc.. Not just a bunch of rooms/encounters strung together. The Tavern itself would make a great set piece as a homebase for a campaign group.

Looking forward to running another Jeff Stevens module soon.

I purchased this one-shot as my very first adventure as a DM, and it provided me with just enough to engage my players. I love that it has the ability to branch into the major campaign books (which I did and am now running Curse of Strahd as the next session), and lets you establish some connective tissue to Barovia or other lands. Just a great all-around product!
