This is a unique module in that it can be run as a mini-epic. In fact it was seemed to be designed as such thus it is recommended you do so in order to fully appreciate it. I ran this for a three-person party of tier 1s and I had no choice but to cut out the part of the cave encounters in order to make it finish within the recommended 4 hours. The mechanices of the final encounter with Bad Fruul's siege was fun as it showed some tangible rewards from the PCs' efforts. The whole storyline for the Tier 1 quests though seemed a bit disjointed with this module doing its best to patch it up together into something coherent.

DDAL05-09 Durlag's Tomb (5e)

Now if Durlag's Tower was a sandbox, you don't get any more linear than Durlag's Tomb. This is a straight-up classic dungeon crawl, with little to no RP social encounters and puzzles, and a greater emphasis on combat, traps, and do or die skill checks. And again, you also have that annoying special stone mechanic that makes your teleportation and planar travel wonky as hell. But I get the idea behind the design choices, because death traps and such are one of the few reliable ways of providing a possible challenge to high level parties.

This was the first Tier 3 module I ever ran, and I found it enjoyable for the most part. The intro set-up of having tea with SEER was entertaining. The adventure itself is quite interesting as it is not as linear as the previous modules this season. You have a central location or hub from where the players decide where to go to next, so if you like giving your players that sandbox experience this is perfect. I will say though that I am not yet quite sure what to make of the penchant for higher level adventures to blanket nerf or curtail certain forms of magic like teleportation or planar travel. On one hand I understand it for balance reasons, but it feels kind of cheap when characters seem to be "punished" for being what they are, spellcasters.

I like Jarl Rising because it gives you options. The various possible encounters included in the module allow you to mix and match so that the events don't always unfold the same way everytime you run it. You can mix in some practical problem solving or a little roleplaying too with the various encounters. It is also because of this that it is one of the few modules I have consistently run that I can finish within the recommended time. The final encounter in the end can be a bit of a slog if players don't come in prepared or are not clever.

Running this module reminded me a lot about season 4's "The Broken One". The mystery element behind who was responsible for sabotaging the town's preparations always does a good job of breaking up the usual expectation of the typical AL adventure module that is mostly combat. If you want to engage your players in some good old-fashioned sleuthing and roleplaying social interactions, then this is a good module to use. The "twist" is a classic cliche but because of the interactive and imaginative aspect of D&D, it will not come out as worn out like in other media.

Don't be fooled, this isn't a four hour adventure, because it leans heavily on the 3 pillars of D&D. It is at its heart a dungeon crawl spiced up with all the dead and wild magic zones, but it leaves plenty of room for socialization as well. The secret missions and the tablets really do a good job of fleshing out the giant lore, though given the time constraints might be lost in the rush to finish the module. The map can be confusing but the final fight can be very entertaining, but challenging all the same.

Since this is a four hour Tier 1 adventure, it gave itself room to breath and allows players to thoroughly experience the 3 pillars of D&D on a more complex level. Finding and getting to Ettin's camp was fun. The puzzles were particularly engaging. But I feel the most fun you can have in this adventure is the gauntlet of challenges the players must overcome in order to earn the Ettin's trust. If you had time to prep you could really go all out on the roleplay for the giant challenges.

This adventure can be quite daunting and extremely difficult, but I suppose given the primary antagonist involved, it was to be expected. As the first Tier 4 adventure available for purchase in AL, you ought to know what you are in for. If you like Dark Souls and Bloodborne levels of difficulty and a heaping dose of horror, this is the adventure you want. The encounters are extremely deadly, so I would suggest following the recommended levels and playing the game when you are at the top level of your respective Tiers. And don't be fooled, this won't just be 4 hours.

The second part of the first 2 part adventure for this season. This leans a lot on the exploration and puzzle aspect of D&D, and is basically a dungeon crawl. I won't recommend it if your players crave for social interaction, because those are few and far in-between in this adventure. The puzzles (of which there are a lot) range from easy, clever, to somewhat difficult. In my experience it also runs significantly longer than 2 hours, and the party will need some reliable way of findig traps and secret doors and opening them.

The first part of the first two part adventure of the season. It is very interesting, and I like how the introduction makes the adventure seem like one thing (fight the hobgoblins) and then when you get to the marsh it turns into something else. I know the adventure is for levels 1-4, but I would recommend that players be levels 3-4 when doing this, because the combat encounters can be difficult.

Ah, now I like this adventure very much because it is a good old-fashioned mystery. It just demonstrates quite well that not every module in AL hinges on combat, though this one has its fair share. The interaction with the river can be especially amusing, but the adventure also really leans in on the exploration pillar of D&D with all the various skill checks you can and need to use to find and decipher clues.

Ooh, I enjoyed running and playing this adventure. I enjoyed the various possible encounters included in the adventure because of the potential that the it will feel fresh every time you run it because of the encounters on the way to rescue the dwarves. It's a healthy mix of exploration and combat, though I feel in most sessions the social interaction with those dwarves can be shortchanged due to the lack of time.

Again this is a fun adventure to run for new players because it engages the 3 pillars of D&D, but it will really be fun if you have a RP heavy group, because the encounters with Thornicious and the fae lean into the social aspect.

I ran this adventure for a bunch of new players when it first came out, and will run it again this coming weekend for an event that will teach D&D to new players. Again, the 3 pillars of D&D are represented here. You can engage the creativity of the players by leaning in hard on the sand storm encounter. However, I will say that the combat might prove to be fatal for fresh level 1s and 2s. I remember having a player almost die during the goblin night attack. So just be careful when running it for inexperienced players.

This adventure module is a pretty good introduction to help those who have never played the game learn the ropes easily. Each adventure contains elements of the 3 pillars of D&D, Exploration, Combat, and Socialization in bite-sized chunks. It eases totally green players easily, and their length of time is not as daunting as other modules.
