Mama Manyknuckles’s island is really cool and creepy. The scale of the map, however, makes it hard to fit on a battlemap.

This module shines in its simplicity: a clear goal, a linear path, and a series of multiple short/simple combat encounters with a few skill checks in between. (At least, the party I ran it for seemed to have no trouble with any of the combats.) Conversely, it means that there's little room for role-playing, if that is what the players are interested in.

Unfortunately, story-wise, this module is simply to lead in to Chelimber's Descent, which is a much worse module, so I can see this module (which is fine as a standalone but not exciting) as easily skipped; these two modules don't even have any effect on the season finale (Parnast Under Siege) like most other modules in the storyline do.

(For two minor complaints: the module interchangably uses "swamp" and "marsh", even though those are different classifications: since the area is described as having trees, the Marsh of Chelimber is a swamp, and not actually a marsh. Also, the name of the module is questionable: unless your water weird is more effective than mine is at drowning characters, no one actually goes beneath Chelimber at any point.)

Overall a solid scenario.

The Good:

  • Plenty of chances for each player to shine.
  • Decent flexibility on how players can approach the latter portion.

The Bad:

  • Final combat could be better balanced, the fight that preceded it was rather more difficult.
  • Navication scene, if the players are unlucky, can really drag on. Should implement a mechanic to get them out of it before it starts to get wearisome.

The hidden dangers of the swamp can really show up in force at one point! Otherwise this is a fairly safe exploration for players that are sent on a go find a place quest. A bit of investigating and a bit of travel make this a pretty well balanced module.

A simple, straight forward exploration adventure that doesn’t actually have much exploration since they are able to find the location with little effort. The fight at the end can be tough depending on the party make up.

There is one entertaining NPC that the DM can have some fun with. I enjoyed playing Feetor when I ran this.

I thought this adventure was fine (to run). It wasn't particularly outstanding in any fun or unusual ways, but it also didn't have any errors or awkward patches I had to fix-up while preparing it. It is pretty much just a combat module (with a smidge of opportunity for the party to socialize with an unusual mephit). Difficulty-wise, I don't think my players ever felt like their characters were at significant risk (the final boss managed to corner them all in one of the huts where they'd tried to rest, so they had to stay in range of her abilities, but the saves weren't too bad for them). This is another module where the enemies don't have a lot of good options against archers and ranged spellcasters.

Not the best, and it seems more like a slog through the marsh for the sake of a slog through the marsh. The final fight seemed a bit overwhelming for T1, but my players managed. Not the best AL I've seen, but not the worst either. I like this much more as a DM than a player.

T1 mods should really be careful of being combat-oriented. Way to easy to kill characters off without even meaning to, and an absolute dearth of actual roleplaying opportunities.

2 hour mods have to be frugal with their time. This mod was too frugal in all the wrong places.

This was my first adventure that I DMed. It was easy to follow and fun. My group enjoyed the adventure quite a bit, espeically the mud mephit. The final battle was challenging. Overall I thought it was a well written module.

A fun medicore adventure. The combat can be challenging for a low tier party. This adventure can be a last minute prep without much issue for a DM.

This adventure is a mediocre module of exploration and it has a weak hook and the master must be work on it. The exploration of Marsh of Chelimber is not a exploration and the party reach the lost tower effortlessly. The magic item is not very usefull.

A simple, straight forward exploration adventure with a tough fight at the end. It has very little set-up, just grab it and go. Great opportunity for a creative DM to have fun with NPCs. Great to run on short notice, just classic D&D.

I almost had the party TPK themselves trying to save one of their comrades unconscious in the razorvine at the final encounter, while the razorvine bush was on fire, so that was fun! But everyone was standing up, nervous, excited, so that was all the more gratifying.

I love this adventure in combination with DDAL05-07 Chelimber's Descent. It's a fun adventure that allows for interesting combats. A group that loves to run in and attack without scouting or planning will have a rough go of the main area. Though it's definitely possible for the group to succeed it won't be easy if they trigger all the fights at the same time. I've run this adventure multiple times with varying outcomes. There is room for steath and ambush as well as roleplay opportunities. One particularly loquacious group talked to the enemies and got the whole backstory as well as convinced them to rethink their choices and leave.

The Adventure is basically broken down into 3-4 fights. The first fight can be quite deadly depending on how hard you make a water weird in a swamp. Also, I suggest not focusing on level 1 players here as the damage from one hit could out right kill them if you roll the damage.

Then there are a series of checks which are fairly useless as I've never seen someone fail them. The players are given ample bonuses as long as they loot the area. If failed then the adventure could drag on for a long time. The other 2-3 fights are all in the same location and seem to be scaled decently. If it is a strong table, I recommend using some creative tactics as the fights can be a bit easy, especially the "Boss" fight.

This is a good adventure, but not my favorite. We use this more as a lead up to the next adventure. While Mama Manyknuckles and her boys are interesting, my party wiped them out before being able to talk to any of them. The mud mephit can be fun to roleplay.

This is a pretty lackluster adventure. As others have mentioned, the entire adventure is basically just 2-3 combat encounters with three ability checks in the middle. The combats on the large island at the end have a potential to be very tactical and engaging, but I would have preferred opportunities for roleplaying or problem-solving.

The ability checks in the middle of the adventure could have been fun, except I found them way too easy. If the players complete two very easy tasks (which don't involve skills at all), they can get a +5 or +10 bonus to their rolls and have advantage on all the checks, which makes it almost impossible to fail.

I feel like the NPC companion in this adventure was rather underwritten and had no effect on the players' experience other than that small statistical boost mentioned above.

I would only recommend this adventure if you are planning on playing the next module in the series, although it can stand on its own just fine.
