Even though this is a 2 hour module and it is possible to run in 2 hours, you will enjoy this much more if you allow 4 hours and use the DM Appendix: Extending the adventure. Starting with the appendix allows you to role play out the whole interaction with Lady Fidatov. It will also allow the party to explore the estate at its best. I had a lot of fun running this part and the players seemed to really enjoy it as well. Once the transformation takes place, there is a cool battle in the ballroom that I ran with minis. The rest of the encounters in the manor house we did as theatre of the mind refering to the map of the house provided. (The characters had explored the house with Lady Fidatov earlier so I felt comfortable putting the map out on the table for all to see.) The boss fight was fun and the swarms of creeping coins were amusing. Dealing with the treasure and with the Burgomaster has some great role playing potential as well. It definitely made the players much more suspicious of the Burgomaster. Overall, a great adventure especially for the role play and exposition.

The flow of story from DDAL4-8 into here was great, and made a lot of sense. The roleplay and actual happenings of the module were great, and it ultimately was really fun to run. I think the final fight was challenging, but appropriately so, and I highly enjoyed the story award for greedy characters (since there are often not repercussions for being murder-hobo like players). Overall, I thought it was a great module. Also, it runs really well as 4 hours as well.

Recommend Purchase: Yes. XP Range: 1,310-1750

The overall story woven between all fourteen modules is called 'Misty Fortunes and Absent Hearts' and is relatively strong overall, but suffers for a couple reasons. The final module probably wasn't written at the time the first was released, so they couldn't or didn't want to spill some of the meta information that DMs would have LOVED to have. In the early modules things would occur 'deus ex machina' and even the DM wouldn't have a clue as to why.

If you're planning on running these, i HIGHLY recommend buying the bundle, reading the DDAL04-14 (The Dark Lord) Adventure Overview on pages 7-8 to see where everthing is heading ... and then reading each module's Overview in turn before running everything. This will help you greatly.

If you start with the first module you'll have enough XP to level up, stay within the module tiers and make it all the way to the 14th module. Afterwards you could always play a few chapters of the Curse of Strahd Harcover and then leave Barovia behind.

Before running any Season 4 module, you should download the following content:

  • dndadventurersleague.org/barexit-escaping-the-mists-of-barovia/
  • dndadventurersleague.org/curse-of-strahd-backgrounds/
  • DMSGUILD: DDAL04 Expanded Dark Gifts Table [OPTIONAL CONTENT]

Season 4 initially couldn't leave the Demiplane of Dread until the very end, but the Admins later introduced the 'Barexit' mechanic.

This is a good module specifically because of its atmosphere. It is certainly a gothic module and the combats are also very interesting and unique. I just think that it's too much crammed into two hours. If this was four hours I could certainly understand the intracacies that were put into this module, but it needs a lot of rushing through to run this in two hours.

A solid, atmospheric module from a veteran Organized Play adventure writer. The module even avoids the now-traditional editing problems that seem to plague AL modules in general and Season Four in particular.

It's a two hour module that can run much longer if the DM and players 'get into' the setting (a house and family with a secret a la Fall of the House of Usher or similar Gothic tales), and it leaves the players making hard decisions, both in combat and out of it.

The only real flaw in the adventure is that it is so self-contained that it has minimal connections (and basically no impact) on the overarching Season Four storyline; if it were a lesser module, it could be skipped without hurting the players' understanding of the main metaplot at all. As it stands, though, this module is one of the reasons to run Season Four; don't skip it!

One of my favorite modules out of all seasons, decent role-play, decent combat, enduring consequences for player decisions. It has a little bit of everything, but still does it well. I would recommend this for almost any group were it not for the fact that it will get your character trapped in barovia and wind up either costing you downtime to get out, or it will take playing one of the later adventures. Still worth the play though.

This is a fun adventure. Get creeped out by weird visions, attack a hedge maze, what's not too like?

Fun adventure, it connects really well with the DDAL04-08. Could use a better story hook.

The Tempter is an adventure that is fun to run, the plot hook isn't that strong because the players may find other ways to resolve the crisis or problem other than continuing on with the story but greedy players may be hooked into it. The party is fun as it shows a typical horror scene where everything was normal but suddenly changes into something horrifying. The encounter with the mirrors is fun also because it will confuse a typical player who is unaware of what is really happening but they will figure it out sooner or later. Overall I find the adventure to be average with some good gothic horror twists and reveals a bit of side story of what happened in the village.

Nice little romp, the mirror golem was a clever twist. However, the underlying plot makes little sense: a small village starving isn't much of an issue for a group of T1 spellcasters, a single T2 cleric or druid can solve this with little difficulty and avoid all this trouble.

DDAL04-09 The Tempter (5e) is another good story told well. A great follow-up to DDAL04-08. The stories flow seamlessly. Great job.

Some excellent ideas, although too many for the time slot. Great last encounter! Full review here: merricb.com
