The Curse of Strahd Companion is your comprehensive guide to running 5th Edition's greatest and grimmest campaign. The Companion dives through every chapter of Curse of Strahd and incorporates Wyatt Trull's mithral-bestselling module, The Wedding at Ravenloft as the campaign's climax. This chapter focuses on Vallaki, an infamous riot of convoluted relationships and hidden details. This guide includes:

  • The Bones of Saint Andral. A full storyline featuring the original Bones of Saint Andral quest and St. Andral's Feast, replete with an encounter with Milivoj, a revised battle with the vampire spawn, a terrifying entrance for Strahd von Zarovich at the church, and later the execution of Baron Vallakovich—by either stoning or immolation (both are provided!).
  • The Honor of Your Presence. Baron Vargas Vallakovich is no fool. Once he learns that Ireena Kolyana has come to Vallaki, he wastes no time "inviting" her and her companions to a tense dinner where he proposes that she and his son marry.
  • Dramatis Personae. A handy guide detailing all characters featured in this chapter of the campaign, with advice and variants.
  • Areas of Vallaki. An in-depth guide to Vallaki's various areas!
  • DM Notes. Notes including but not limited to spicing up the region with valuable roleplay with select NPCs.
  • Magic Item Descriptions. Save yourself the time of digging through the Dungeon Master's Guide to determine how the magic items in this chapter work.
  • Monster Stats. Time is precious, and matters all the more in combat. Appendix B has the statistics for the NPCs used in this chapter!
  • Maps. Three new VTT maps by CzRPG featuring the St. Andral's Church, the Vallaki market, and the Festival of the Blazing Sun!

Hey Wyatt - Reading the released Companion Chapters has been a blast and I am waiting for the next ones to come out. But I have two questions for this chapter. In Chapter 1, the idea was mentioned that during Act III the adventures would/could return to Vallaki to liberate it from Lady Wachters control either due to the desire to liberate the Martikov family or rescuing their destined ally. Additionally in Ch. 1 it was mentioned that during Act III a showdown between the party and Strahd would/could occur regarding their true Destined Ally and that too would be preferably happening in Vallaki. (I reads a bit that maybe the idea was to link these two events together...?)
But neither did these two events receive more insight/detail in this chapter, as to how liberating Vallaki could look like and how that showdown could potential go down. Did these events got cut or do you plan to add them to a different chapter, like Chapter 4 as in, all these things can be done in Act III before they attend the wedding in...See more

Wyatt-- excellent guide with good suggestions for Vallaki. But I wanted to bring something to your attention. The Chapter 1 guide makes reference to the Vallaki chapter concerning Strahd stealing the Holy Symbol and giving it to Wachter after she seizes control of Vallaki, and that she has stronger stats. I don't see that stronger statblock for Wachter or details or development on Wachter having the Holy Symbol. I was curious because I'm prepping a return to Vallaki under Wachter's control in my own campaign. Did I miss this in the chapter, or was it something that was ultimately cut?

Ah, my mistake. Between Chapter 1 and 5 (about 8 months' time) I realized that buffing up Wachter was counter to her character. She's a political agent with minimal magical power. Given the length of time it took me to write Chapter 1, I suppose correcting that slipped my mind. I will make sure to update that in Chapter 1.

However, if you want a beefed up Wachter, I suggest the Priest of Osybus statblock from Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft.

Aha, I understand! While I think that's valid, I did go with using a modified Priest of Osybus statblock for her. I weighed the idea of keeping her a political agent only, but I decided that, with her cult power and the success of taking control over Vallaki, Strahd might give her some extra power in the vein of an undead warlock or something, both to reward her for her competence and devotion and to deter the party from trying to just kill her rather than engaging with the political intrigue of a second Vallaki visit. I liked the resurrection mechanic of the Priest of Osybus the most for this.

You are a wise man, Robert. When the players discover Wachter's dangerous powers, promise me you'll do a Palpatine-esque "UNLIMITED POWAH" scene.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
