Come one, come all, to the wondrous Witchlight Carnival! Fleeting as a faerie’s kiss, the Witchlight Carnival comes to town but once in a moonbeam, bringing with it magic and mystery before disappearing to distant lands. Astonishing shows and incredible performances await our guests! Spare some coin, don some wings, and experience the extravaganza!

A Wild Beyond the Witchlight Expansion - What's this all about?

Chapter 1: The Witchlight Carnival is the introduction to The Wild Beyond the Witchlight. While this chapter contains a lot of material already, there is a bounty of opportunity for creating more dynamic attractions, competitive skill challenges, and even some options for combat. This 20+ page supplement contains:

  • Expanded Timed Events. An expansion to the Big Top Extravaganza event giving the party the opportunity to steal the Witchlight vane or get into contact with Burly and engage in some tactical combat.
  • Expanded Locations. Optional and additional mechanics to improve five of the existing attractions: Bubble-Pop Teapot, Carousel, Dragonfly Rides, Gondola Swans, and Small Stalls (plus a little cheating).
  • New Locations. Three new attractions: Fortune Teller, Thunderdome, and the Tower Topple Game.
  • Backgrounds. Let your players play as the Party Crasher with its own adventure hook for the campaign and a guide on how to implement it in the carnival.
  • Expanded Tables. Twelve more Carnival Scenes, Carnival Prizes, and Lost Things giving you a total of twenty options for each when combined with the book.
  • Tattoos and Face Paintings. Spare a ticket punch to get some fun temporary charms and buffs and jazz up your look.
  • Handouts. A helpful handout for the Witchlight Hand background with helpful information about the carnival to take some pressure off the DM.
  • Custom Art. Two full-color hand-drawn Battlemaps, handout artwork for each of the new locations, tokens for virtual tabletops and more!

Testimonials

"The verdict: with new and expanded attractions, events, scenes, backgrounds, prizes, and more, Witchlight Carnival Expanded is the perfect expansion for one of the most memorable level 1 areas in a 5E campaign." -@RogueWatson (https://roguewatson.com/2021/12/06/dms-guild-review-witchlight-carnival-expanded/)

If we wanted to play this storyline, what titles would we need to purchase and in what order would we need to play them?

To use Witchlight Carnival Expanded, you’ll need a copy of The Wild Beyond the Witchlight.

Then, I highly recommend picking up the Wild Beyond the Witchlight Adventure Bundle if you want more great content to add to the story and flesh out some plot lines and locations! The order is Carnival, Hither, Thither, then Yon.

Couple comments and questions:<br /><br />
How do you picture the topic of the unicorn horn coming up at the Fortune Teller? Is the horn mentioned at all, or just the given hint about its location with no context?<br /><br />
The Witchlight Hand handout is missing the Mystery Mine. Also, I updated the dragonfly rides description to include the possibility of a peaceful ride, similar to the bubble-pot teapot. Also, I recommend adding a mention of the snacks and other Small Stalls as part of the Carnival Offerings.<br /><br />
Is the Active ability of the Face Paintings intended to be useable as often as players want? Seems a bit much, but maybe the stakes at the carnival are low enough that it doesn’t matter, and staff may have to intervene if PCs are harassing other guests.<br /><br />
Overall, though, great stuff!

Hey Joe thanks for the comments:
1. After Edna senses a party member's lost thing, she could say, "I sense something else lost through my trance. Are you missing a horn perchance?" and then give the clue from the Fortune Teller's Advice.
2. I will update the handout with the Mystery Mine and snacks thanks for catching that.
3. The face paintings are intended to be useable at will. The duration is only 8 hours, which will end essentially as soon as the party leaves the carnival (before it would actually affect any encounter balance other than the Big Top Catastrophe or Thunderdome).
If you have any other suggestions or notice bugs, feel free to shoot me an email!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
