Van Richten's Ecology of Vampires

"On that terrible day, I swore myself to a new career:
the pursuit and destruction of those creatures
such as the one that had taken my son and wife
from me, that feed on the body of society as a
cancer feeds on the body of man."
-Dr. Rudolph Van Richten-

In his career of over thirty plus years, Dr. Van Richten risked life, limb, and at times, his immortal soul in order to accumulate his vast wealth of knowledge to become the foremost expert and hunter of the horrors that stalked the Core and beyond. All his hard won insight into the Creatures of the Night was gathered into a series of guides so that others could carry on his work long after he was gone. In the first of this series, we delve into the Ecology of the creature which set the good doctor on his illustrious, and tragic vocation; The living dead...The Vampire.

A Treatise on the Kings and Queens of the Undead

What is this?

For the first time ever for 5E, we take the classic Van Richten's Guide to Vampires and bring it to the current rule system. This supplement gives DM's various options to customize vampires to fit their campaigns, including creating older and more dangerous vampires to set against players. Also included are options concerning feeding, procreation, hibernation, and more. So sharpen your stakes, clutch your holy symbol tightly, and with conviction. For when the sun sets, the hunt begins...

This is a tool supplement for all DMs that wish to make their vampiric villains a memorable experience! Venture through the pages to unlock the mysteries of vampiric hibernation, vampire ranks and even methods of procreation! Your players will be surprised that they are not once more fighting the generic vampire of the monster manual!

Inside you will find:

  • Age ranking, from Fledgling to Patriach/Matriarch and the powers a vampire unlocks through age.
  • The stages a vampire goes till they reach blood starvation.
  • Vampire methods of procreation.
  • Rules for staking a vampire during combat.
  • Vampire hibernation.
  • Vampire Salient powers.

Would anyone (only if you have the time of course) be willing to give me an example patriarch stat block? I'd love to see one to give me a solid idea of what a vampire BBEG would look like. Thanks in advance, I know it's not a small undertaking so it's certainly appreciated.

Hi! I wanted to do the conversion for this from 2e to 5e myself, but I see yours here instead. I was going to ask a few questions about it before I purchased, but I'll just pick it up and find out for myself. Thanks for doing this work for me!

Hello Nick, this is based on the 2e rules and we believe that we have not missed anything. Appropriate measures have been taken to adapt it to 5e (for example there is no level drain). I think other than that, there are not many alterations. We always try to keep it true to the original version, as long as 5e allows us. We have not pointed out what the original version says or what difference there is with our version, but it's easy to compare the two editions if you put them side by side and see what remains the same
and what has been altered (not much). It wasn't that difficult to translate, no. If you know how 5e and 2e work then it becomes easier. Let me know if you have other questions.

This is probably a dumb question, apologies if it is but are the stats given in the pdf for fledgling all the way to patriarch meant to be a template to use with the vampires in the monster manual or simply meant to be used in conjunction with the dungeon masters guide to create your own vampires? I'm just a little bit confused, also I'm not really a DM so that might explain a lot haha. Thanks for any answers!

Hello Greg! No dumb questions! The stats given are meant to be placed on any vampire statblock (for example that of the monster manual) to determine capabilities according to age. The DM can also use the template as inspiration to create their own vampire too. The DM's guide is a huge assistant to this task. So both of your ideas are correct :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
