Monsters of the Old World

A collection of creatures inspired by European folklore for 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons

Terrible monsters and valorous allies. Mischievous tricksters and sage advisors. Include in your games these new creatures coming directly from the European myths and legends.

This book was created by a multi-national team of writers, artists, and editors, originating from nearly a dozen different European countries. With this project, they hope to share a bit of their country’s history, lore, and mythology with you for use in the world’s greatest roleplaying game.

There is so much murdering monster magic in this thing that it is brimming with life. I can smell the musk from Fenris, feel the hatred rolling off of the trolls, and the manipulative energies stemming from the nokken.

– Comics, clerics & controllers

Monsters of the Old World is a great addition to a DM's bestiary, especially if your campaign uses medieval European motifs or themes.

– Comicbook.com

What didn't I like about this? I don't think I didn't like anything! I really love the entire supplement, I really thought it's a great collection of monsters, really unique!

– DM Dango

Everything has come from somewhere or inspired from something from some other culture, history or country. They've done that here, they paid respect, they've done it very very well. So, in that regard, I have to give this a perfect 5 out of 5 on content.

– All Things Lich

Inside you will find:

  • More than 50 stat-blocks describing creatures between CR 0 and 30
  • The lore and description of creatures including suggestions about how to use them in your game
  • Drawings of each creature, including a lot of original art
  • Tables sorting the creatures according to CR, terrain and type
  • A pronunciation table for the creatures’s names.
If you want to explore the Old World even more, give a look to "Artifacts of the Old World".

OBS_scott.pngMost D&D games are set against a backdrop that’s reminiscent of Western Europe during the middle ages. Whether that describes your setting or not, if you want to include some Central and Eastern European flavor in the game, you’re going to love this book.

Monsters of the Old World includes both lore and well-balanced stats for more than 50 mythological creatures, from Welsh afanc to German klabautermann, Belarusan południca, and Scandinavian vølve (along with a handy pronunciation guide!). Also including very nice original art, this manual is sure to find a place among your trusted references.

Dear Mathias, we are not planning a PoD version of this product itself. However we are producing a new product called "Artifacts of the Old World" (a collection of magic items) and, possibly, a bundle of these products (together with others) might come out in a printed version.

I'd love a collected "Old World" POD book with all the monsters and items and whatnot.

Will there be an OGL/Pathfinder version of this? I like the idea but am so fiscally invested in Pathfinder I can't justify the purchase of what appears to be a really awesome book.

At the moment we are not considering such conversion. The all manual is written for D&D 5th edition, but a game master with a bit of knowledge of the system might be able to convert the creatures for other games. Surely, the lore and the inspiration are suitable for any playing system

Is there going to be in Monsters of the new world version of this, Ogopogo, skinwalkers, Wendigo, Etc. And/or do you plan on releasing a part two of this? I like the monsters of the old world book quite a lot and I'm sure my players will enjoy playing against them.

There are several additional project going on after "Monsters of the Old World". The team that worked on this book was made of European authors, so they are not planning to do a New World version, but they will soon come with new contents

At the moment we are not working on translations of this title, but if you are having some trouble in understanding some part of MotOW, then feel free to contact one of the Italian authors via facebook or twitter

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
