ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Cartographer is a ranger archetype for intrepid explorers, mapmakers, and trailblazers who forge their own paths through the wilderness. How big is the area covered by the Master Map at the point of creation?

You can spend 2 hours and 10 gp to add 10 square miles to the Master Map as soon as you get this feature, but the parchment is blank to start. :)

Hello! I'd recommend getting in touch with customer support for DMs Guild or OneBookShelf.

I really love this subclass and can't wait to play it!

One question, though: does the Cartographer's Vision feature require an action to use?

Hi, Finley! Sorry for the delay in responding. The Cartographer's Vision feature functions like a ritual that requires concentration, so (to quote the PHB) you must spend your action each turn casting the spell, and you must maintain your concentration while you do so. Does that make sense?

As to be expected from a collaboration between such a talented group of folks, this is high quality work in every conceivable way. A great and unique sub-class concept, with sublime art, design and writing. The descriptions and mechanics for the specific features and abilities are evocative and well balanced, and will provide new, exciting and fun roleplay possibilities for the PC and DM to toy with. Get it while its still at this low price, as it's worth more!

What to say? This is a fantastic addition to the Ranger Class. It's well thought out, well presented, and I have a feeling I'll be using it very soon in my in-person campaign. I absolutely Love the work that Hannah does.

This subclass really makes the ranger feel like a RANGER. Not a woodland warrior, but the scout and frontier guide they were meant to be. Thank you for adding this to my game table, Hannah. I hope everyone gets as much enjoyment from it as I know I will. ~ Dustin

Nifty! This looks like a fun variation and opens up some neat RP possibilities.

One suggestion is that I'd love to see this get something to aid in dungeon/underground exploration... Perhaps Arcane Cartography could also give a bonus for detecting secret passages as the innate map sense gives the character a feeling for where those should be.

Not quite sure how you'd work that as it would have to be a DM roll, maybe a bonus to passive perception to detect secret doors/passages.

Actually, this idea of a bonus for spotting hidden passages wouldn't have to be limited to underground exploration. I'd think that the Arcane Cartography ability would give the ranger a sense of whenever someone has messed with the natural environment. While outdoors, I'm thinking that could give a bonus to spotting hidden pit traps or concealed entrances. Basically, it's a greater chance to notice things out of place for the environment.

I love that idea—we definitely talked about dungeon cartography but didn't want to make the subclass too complicated. By all means, try this out at your own table and let us know how it goes!

Whenever the creature moves without teleporting, it must make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC or take 1d6 slashing damage for each five feet of movement.
--> do you repeat the Saving Throw every 5 feet?

Nice work btw!! Clearly a great thematic archetype that was missing :-)

I like it too but i don't understand how this feature it is contextualised with the theme of this archetype.

Hmm, I will see if this can be worded better. It could go either way, at the DM's discretion (though repeating the saving throw seems tedious). The intention is that the saving throw happens once, the first time the creature moves (like the Arcane Archer's Grasping Arrow) and then the damage is taken for each five feet it wishes to move. Thanks for pointing this out!

You can flavor it however you want, but the context for me is that the Cartographer has a strong connection with the terrain around them, and can use that connection to hinder an enemy. Does that make sense?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
