Puzzles Volume Two     Puzzles Volume Three   PPP Bundle

Adventurers need much more than just brute force, magical powers, and nimble moves in order to survive the dangers that await them. A sharp mind is just as important as a sharp sword. When faced with a challenging puzzle, finding the solution can be the difference between victory and defeat.

Puzzles, Predicaments, and Perplexities contains a collection of logic puzzles, brain teasers, and encoded sequences intended to test the problem solving and deductive reasoning of characters and players. These puzzles are designed to be easily placed into any adventure with no additional work, yet also provide guidance on how Dungeon Masters can customize the details to best fit into their own campaigns.

This title includes:

  • 10 original puzzles for use in your adventures.
  • Instructions on how to scale the difficulty of the puzzles for characters of all levels.
  • Hints for each puzzle to guide players towards the solution without simply giving it away.
  • Guidance for customizing the puzzles to fit into your own adventure, campaign, or original world.
  • Optional “Raise The Stakes” sidebars for making puzzles more deadly.
  • 5 original maps suitable for in person or online play.
  • 4 original hand-outs that help visualize the layout, runes, and symbols involved with some of the puzzles.
  • A table listing of spells potentially triggered by failed solutions organized by Tier and danger level.

“A new unofficial supplement on DMs Guild may become my new best friend. I read one of the puzzles, and I am already thinking of how to incorporate it into my campaign.” - Geek Tyrant

“Good D&D puzzles are hard to come by, even on the Internet, so Puzzles, Predicaments, and Perplexities is an easy buy for anyone who designs dungeons that aren't just a series of rooms with enemies to fight and kill.” - Comicbook.com

“This unofficial supplement to Dungeons and Dragons campaigns gives an adjustable difficulty to balance things out. Dungeon Masters would surely love this supplement.” - HexMojo

Note: A version of this product for Fantasy Grounds virtual tabletop is available here and a version for Roll20 virtual tabletop is available here.

Hey Steve! I recently used your Key Puzzle in a module that I'm working on and wanted to know if you have any licensing policy? I'm not planning on making my fortunes in Module Making, but I have one that I'm currently building for the heck of it.

Hi Paul!
Assuming you're publishing on the DMs Guild, its license allows for products to use content from other DMs Guild products. I also don't mind (and may be a bit flattered) that you'd include our content! If you'd like to mention this book as the source within the credits, that'd be appreciated but not required. Thanks for asking!

Any chance of getting the collected Trilogy in print? I'm pretty old school and prefer to have the books handy rather than as digital files.

You're not the first one who has asked this. There are no plans at this time, but it's something we're considering, as it's been requested a few times now.

I was just looking for a printed bundle option. I don't tend to read PDFs and if I were to print them all [the PDFs which I currently have] they would use up a fair amount of ink.

Not sure why, but the pdf version I downloaded is almost impossible to read-- most of the font is bright white. I am opening the downloaded file in Acrobat on a Mac.

That's strange, hadn't heard that before. When you view the Preview through the site, do you have the same issue? I'm wondering if maybe it's a setting within Acrobat to disable the background images or something along those lines?

Hello! The product itself is a PDF, so you won't be able to use it directly in roll20, but the contents itself surely lends itself to online play.

Hi Jonathan,
While we would love to make this available in print, unfortunately the DMs Guild doesn't offer the opportunity to do print versions for already released products. Pre-approval is needed and the digital and print releases happen on the same day.

Good question. I suppose there's a chance, but we'd likely wait for the third part of the trilogy to arrive before we pursue that.

Thank you, but I mean like having it printed into a book (by a print service) for personal use (just to clarify). That way it might live longer through my sessions. Amazing books btw. Bought all three.

Hi! How did you approach balance/difference between players and their characters? In other words, is there some way to handle a smart player playing a not-so-smart character and conversely a player who isn't able to solve the puzzle themselves but who plays a wizard with an INT of 20? ;)
Reply

Steve "Jaspor" O April 24, 2020 3:14 pm UTC
CREATOR
Good question! There are a few ways we handle those situations. Many puzzles have an optional "Raising the Stakes" sidebar talking about adjusting the difficulty of the puzzle. If you think you have a smart player that would solve a puzzle easily, there are ways to tweak it to make it harder. On the flip side, for players who may not be as good at puzzles, there is a "Tips and Hints" section for each puzzle. This section is also where character skills come into play, as revealing the hints could be dependent upon a successful skill check. So a wizard with an INT of 20 who does an Investigation check is likely to notice something about the puzzle that will help them solve it.

Hi. It's really more like a bunch of individual puzzles that can be inserted into your own adventures, though it is possible to string them together to form their own adventure. Playing through all the puzzles would likely take multiple sessions. I hope that answers your question. :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
