The Book of the Dead: An Undead Bestiary

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to the Book of the Dead! Inside these cursed pages you’ll find a horde of undead monsters for your D&D games. Necromancers beware, not all of these monsters can be easily controlled.

Included in this book are templates that you can apply to other monsters, turning them into terrifying undead monstrosities. Two formidable vampire NPCs make their 5th edition appearance here, The Black Duke and Red Widow. A tactics section guides you on the best ways to handle each monster.

The dead are stirring, and will not be stopped. Prepare yourself for an onslaught of over 100 undead!

Now available on Fantasy Grounds!

Another item I had on my Halloween wishlist that isn't in the Halloween sale. So sad. :(

does this contain images on the undead as well or is it just written descriptions?

This book contains a lot of images, but not every entry will have a dedicated image.

I've spent the last hour attempting to check out the sample. Hoping to atleast see a table of context, but all the sample shows is the cover. I've even tried the quick view, but am getting nothing but a blank page. I am looking for a Bestiary of undead that can range from the low end of the CR range to the upper range for a campaign that takes place in a place like Thay, and I was hoping your tome would be what I'm looking for in one convenient package.

That's strange, the Quick Preview isn't loading anything for me (not even the cover), but the full-size preview does show the table of contents.

The index of creatures by CR rating isn't in the front of the document so I can't capture it in a preview, but I posted a export of the Creatures by CR here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OapkB01jBuIj8bNb9UBxKvwR_QEY1j7r/view?usp=sharing

Any chance you could adapt this to FG (Fantasy Grounds)?

Hi Chris! Sorry for the delay, the last real update was around April, I recently updated to remove an extra file, the most recent one should be BookoftheDead_update3.pdf. Sorry for any confusion! The April update added some new monsters to the book.

I just bought this. There's 2 files offered. V3 (25 Megs) and Update3 (269 Megs) - both revised title names basically sounds like this is the 3rd update to the file. Which one is the most current? And why is there such a huuuuuuuuuge difference in size?

Hi Craig! Sorry for the delay, just saw your comment. I recently updated the file to just have the most recent one, it's BookoftheDead_update3.pdf.

Not sure why there's such a difference, the newest one had about 10 new pages added but that's quite a size difference.

Under the Grave Knight template in immunities you have lightning damage. What i'm wondering is: is that in addition to the element they died from causing them to become a graveknight or is that a mistake? I noticed te sample one in the book uses lightning damage so i can't tell if the element you pick is in addition to the lightning damage listed under immunities or not.

Good Question! The graveknight gets immunity to lightning damage normally. It can select lightning for Ruinous Revivification, which doesn't give it an additional immunity (it's already immune to lightning) but does factor into other abilities, like Devastating Blast.

I'm sorry to say this but just in the sample file, I'm seeing a number of mistakes. The intro page uses a comma instead of a semi colon and the Angel of Death has 2 'in' in the stat block.

I'm not seeing a credit section stating this has an editor and proofreader assigned to it, let alone where the art came from.

Not an overwhelming endorsement to spend $AUS12+ on this atm.

Thanks Ken!

A credit page for the art is in the full pdf in the back. All art is either stock art or art provided by WOTC for use in DMs Guild products.

Can you specify the issue your seeing in the angel of death stat block? I'd love to fix it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
