It Builds Character: Character Options for 5th Edition

5th edition does a wonderful job of boiling the myriad characters from fantasy literature into the 12 classes. However, there is limited room for customiztion. It Builds Character Presents players and GMs alike with myriad options for character customization and advancement. This book features 8 new playable races, 36 class archetypes (3 per class, more than doubling the options in the PHB), and 20 additional feats.

Ok, after looking over the comments posted by people in this discussion, I had to go back and carefully look over the class and features argued regarding said statement. It boils down to this, no matter which direction you extend the conversation to, its conclusion ends in this; the class and the bonuses tied in with the obvious problems one has to deal with by playing this class are clearly taken into full consideration. I see no weight or logical argument that can remotely convince a seasoned player that these are not balanced. The objective of this document is to give people a huge variety of options that are not overpowered and that do not “break the game”. If one is to believe this is not the case, they clearly do not have a reasonable grasp of the core rules. In my mind, that in itself needs more attention that trying to nitpick at a supplement that seasoned games and Dungeon Masters can use.

So, after reading through the races, there is absolutely no reason to actually play any race outside of Pangoli for Druid & Clerics. There are also a lot of issue with the other races as well.

No offense but did you actually playest this and stack it against other options? Because everything in here makes the PHB almost irrelevant.

It's honestly really poorly designed which is a shame because you seem to have alot of good ideas here.

I honestly don't mean this as an insult to yourself, but the very first bit of crunch I read in the preview tells me that this book will be extremely unbalanced. The Bugbear gaining a +4 +2 and a -2 -2, gaining a feat, always having advantage on stealth, rerolling 1's on attack rolls, and proficiency with ALL bludgeoning weapons (which could include campaign specific weapons, or possibly exotic weapons in the future) is absolutely bonkers.

We've play tested, nothing was broken. You are welcome to your opinion... and duly noted.

I think broken is meant in terms of "Why would I play a PHB race when these ones get so many better traits?" It doesn't necessarily mean it breaks the game, it just makes existing content sub-optimal choices.

In all honesty, that is an standard D&D question, and it all boils down to flavor. These races and class options have been available to my table for well over a year... only one player has chosen one of these races after play test. Not everyone wants to play a gnoll, kobold, or bugbear... I get what you are saying... but it's not all numbers

Is there any difference between this product and the one you published a few days ago?

There was an issue with a copyrighted race that my people didn't catch... we had to remove it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
