The World of Greyhawk (1e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

So the players have been complaining that the campaign is too dull, eh? Not enough detail? Why is this country at war with its neighbors? How can trade routes exist with all those wandering monsters? Most importantly, why do all of those unsacked, unlooted dungeons and ruins stand so close to the one big city all of the adventurers in the world hail from?

Rejoice, Dungeon Masters, and relax! All of these questions can be answered by following the example of the volume in your hands. The World of Greyhawk is here, and is suitable for use as the backdrop of a new campaign without changes; or, as an alternative, city, country or geographical descriptions can be used to fill in details for existing campaigns.

The World of Greyhawk is in the form of a gazetteer written by a historian native to the region, and as such includes the calendar systems used by the peoples of Oerth, a history of the major nations over the last thousand years, a discussion of climate in the different regions of the world, and even an appendix listing many runes and symbols (and their meanings) which are found in ancient and magical writings.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Is this still available? I can add it to my cart but when I go to the cart it isn't there.

Also is this the same booklet from the boxset or does it include other stuff in it?

Can anyone confirm if the POD still has map problems? I absolutely will not purchase this until the maps are complete.

It’s not exactly a map problem; they just photocopied it and made them separate pages in the book. Refuse all you want, but it’s pretty inexpensive.
If you want the full map you can get a PDF of the ‘83 box set, although it is not perfect either.

On March 18 2018 Robert C reported "Just a heads up, the scans of the maps in the books are missing chunks of the maps. For example the first two north west scans are missing the west east hexes along row 97." This is what I was asking about, I know about the map pages as I have been buying PODs since 2016 and what good is a pdf when I ONLY buy PODs?

I’m reporting for the benefit of anyone else who reads this. It may not be of any good to you personally, but I have purchased the ‘80 folio and the ‘83 set PDFs on here as well as the ‘80 folio POD on this site. As imperfect as they are it’s better than a worn-out forty year old overpriced original from Ebay.

I have the original and the POD. I like the POD maps cause they are easy to look at without digging out a map. But I understand what you are talking about, but there is a free solution with some of the best maps of Greyhawk I have ever seen. Please check out Anna B. Meyer's maps of Greyhawk, which you can download for free. https://www.annabmeyer.com/greyhawk-content/

The map was cut into multiple pages and made part of the Folio booklet. The 1983 World of Greyhawk box set is available on pdf and has a large pdf map.

No, the PDF file is named The_World_of_Greyhawk_(1e) but if you open it in your PDF reader it is very clearly still the WGS1 Five Shall Be One module.

As Jason Z notes below, the Watermarked PDF file for this product has somehow been mistakenly replaced with the Watermarked PDF file 9317_WGS1_Five_Shall_Be_One.pdf from the product WGS1 Five Shall Be One (2e).

I sent in a report to DriveThruRPG remarking this fact, but so far no action has been taken other than the “Report this title” link disappearing from the page.

I would recommend against purchasing this product until this issue gets fixed if you want to have The World of Greyhawk Folio.

Just received my print on demand version. It is very well done. The print is a bit faint but very readable. The map is made up of (9) 2-sided pages bound into the book. If you are buying for the map, you may want to do the print plus pdf. Then you could take the pdf to Kinkos for a full size map. I prefer print products so I did not purchase the PDFs and cannot comment on the product. I really appreciate having Classic D&D products available in print at non-collectible prices. Thanks Wizards of the Coast.

Why can they not fix this. Is it possible the company no longer has a good quality original and are not even willing to try to buy one off a fan to use as a second-best "master" to scan from?

Heck Dan, the company wont even accept a fan scanned copy of old TSR products even. I have better scans of several items and they won't even let me give them a copy of my scans... :-(

Will it have the full size maps printed out or just page sized pieces in the bound book?

It’s definitely worth POD if you get the map as full size

Yeah, I kind of need to know the same before I buy. Big map or no big map? That's at least half the reason for buying this.

I bought those - print and pdf - Fantastic maps, the only problem being that they are Post Wars which is not the period I played in back in day. I'd prefer the Darlene maps of original Greyhawk.

I cannot say enough great things about the Dungeon map version though as a map of Greyhawk it is beautiful. I just dislike the Nation-changes or I'd be satisfied with that option as quality of scan is good too.

I keep hearing "the drift isn't bad" and the like - but if I am to pay for one (vs scanning my original) - I'd be doing it to get a GOOD map. Not a "close" to good.

I do have those, but the later edition maps are not useful if you did not follow the GH Wars timeline.

I’m sure if they refitted their printers to produce full-sized original maps then the POD product would end up costing more than most people are willing to pay. They print and ship their books from regional printers, or at least mine was only three hours away from my town.

Well I just ordered the POD version. When I get it, I will review the production for everyone. I own 2 original versions of this folio and 2 more of the boxed set but I bought this for two reasons. 1) play copy 2) support POD of my old games. As the things I missed the 1st time around come back in POD i'll get them. Thank you DMsGuild for these POD.

Yes, one softcover booklet. The map is cut up and bound, but otherwise everything is fine.

On the other hand, if you purchase the ‘83 World of Greyhawk on this site there is a big pdf map.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
