Explore the Shining Jewel of Faerûn

Waterdeep beckons! For centuries, this grand city has stood at the edge of the Sea of Swords, tempting heroes with its bustling port, thriving markets, hidden perils, and half-forgotten dungeons. Adventure waits on every street corner, behind every locked door, and below every cellar!

This supplement for the D&D game offers an in-depth examination of Waterdeep. It includes a rich history of the city, detailed city maps, descriptions of key locations, statistics for important NPCs, information on local laws, and rules for running and playing in Waterdhavian adventures.

  • 4 prestige classes
  • 38 magic items
  • 11 city maps

To use this supplement, a Dungeon Master also needs the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, Monster Manual, and Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. A player needs only the Player’s Handbook and Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

Not quite up to doing a full review - but the PoD of this is a solid and professional product. It's not quite as nice as the original book - but given that the original book goes for upwards of $100 USD in 2022, this is certainly a more affordable way to fill out your bookcase.

The original book was a hardcover. The PoD is a softcover. But it's otherwise about the right dimensions and will look fine on your shelf with its peers. It's in high resolution and full colour and suffers from none of the scanning issues of some of the 1E and 2E books on DM's Guild.

The PDF is searchable and has everything you want from a PDF edition.

I would love to see DM's Guild and Wizards of the Coast bring the other 3.x Forgotten Realms books to Print on Demand, given the exorbitant prices most of them are fetching in second-hand markets these days.

How much of this is still usable for 5e? It seems that the timeline was advanced 100 years for 4e, the Spellplague happened, and the city gained new wards such as Mistyshore and Undercliff.

Based on the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide, it looks like a lot of those changes have been rolled back with 5e, but is there an article somewhere detailing the differences between Waterdeep circa 1370s and the current 1490s?

I would love to know this answer too! Any thoughts from the author? Our group just got to Waterdeep and will be spending a ton of time there. This look like a good supplement, but I wish I could browse it a bit more before buying to know if it's a good fit.

OK, I dug into this a bit for my upcoming Dragon Heist campaign. The city of Waterdeep outlined in this book was from 100 years ago. So, you have a few choices:

1. Ignore the timeline advancement in the novels and subsequent publications. This would work just fine if you are running a Waterdeep game that doesn't use the Dragon Heist module and is fine without aligning with the novels and Adventurer's League.

2. Mine this book for add-on content to the Dragon Heist, Undermountain or other 5e official Waterdeep content.

Keep in mind that most of the humans should be long dead by 1492 DR, but through the magic of ???? many old favorites are somehow still alive: Mirt, Durnan, Volo, Elminster. Even Minsk and Boo are back in the action down in Baldur's Gate.

3. Advance the city to 1492 DR. The awesome scribes at Candlekeep did a lot of leg-work to summarize the changes to the city in the last century here: http://forum.candlekeep.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=21050

For 5E games running in the modern timeline (circa 1489 DR), it's historical background only. If you're running the sort of game and group that cares about lore and history, and you want to have a deep-dive answer ready to go for any situation, you'll find a lot of value here. But if you're looking to run a game in 1489 Waterdeep "out of the box", you're better off just buying Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and sticking to that.

What exactly are the 3 buying options? I know and understand the PDF option. But the other 2 sound like physical books? Do you get an actual printed book of some kind?

Yes, it is searchable. I spot-checked a few words and it seems to be a good scan with OCR.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
