"There aren't enough 5th Edition products aimed specifically at kids, and it's a delight to see somebody finally producing something for that market. It also helps that this is a really fun, well-written adventure." - Loot the Room, an ENnie nominated RPG blog

"It was a great kid's adventure! It was a My Little Pony story about the Magic of Friendship." -@merlinofchaos

Looking for more family-friendly D&D? Check out Clonker's Guide to Being a Hero!

The young heroes are invited to Massie Littlefoot’s birthday party before she departs for wizarding school in Waterdeep. At the height of the party, Clonker, an ogre known to live nearby, steals Massie’s cake! The heroes must brave the forest and get Massie’s cake back before everyone goes home. This introductory adventure is designed for level 1-2 characters.

What Is This Project?

An Ogre and His Cake is an introductory 5th edition Dungeons & Dragons adventure built for and tested by kids. It is every parent or guardian's dream to share their passions with the young ones they love. We hope Clonker, the lovable ogre, opens these doors for you.

We also want to support children and families who are unable embark on every adventure. All of our creator royalties (50% of what you pay, with the other 50% supporting the upkeep of the Dungeon Masters Guild and Wizards of the Coast) will be donated directly to Extra Life, a non-profit organization focused on supporting children's hospitals through communal gaming events.

What's Inside?

  • A beautifully designed single-session module with full-color artwork and cartography. A Printer Friendly version is also available.
  • Tips on how to run Dungeons & Dragons for young players.
  • Three original magic items.
  • Stat blocks for all NPCs and monsters.
  • High quality DM and player maps for easy printing or virtual tabletop use.

I been ready to buy this for my youth center as I plan on using this to teach kids from K-4th grade how to play DND for the first time. How in depth are the premade characters included and is it easy to lvl them up from 1 to 2 or 3 if needed?

I want to thank you for making this story and having it so affordable to play. This was so much fun for my family and we have continued to use Clonker as a character in future adventures (he has now joined the party as we journey through various one shots) for the last year. When we played this adventure I thought for sure my 9 year old would think the storyline too simple as I had wanted to try this story for my 6 year old. However they both were engaged, surprised and so enthralled that this story has been a part of our campaign ever since.

As the storyline has evolved during our campaign Clonker is now a ‘wizard’ in self-training and has a hammer as his wand. Anytime he has to engage with an enemy he swings his wand at them and yells ‘SPELL’ either trying to flatten them or send them flying. He continues to be such a fun part of our D&D night. Thanks!

I was just looking through the list of creatures, when I noticed Doromand has a HP of 11(2d8+2) but the CON is 14(+2). So shouldn't the HP be 13(2d8+4)?

I'm new to playing D&D 5e style RPGs, so I'm still learning how the stats work.

Hi - I'd like to translate the character sheets to German for my kids - any chance to get an editable PDF (i.e. not reduced to a single layer graphics, but with editable text labels)?

Hi there, and thanks for picking this up!

It is really hard to give an exact age range as every child and family is different. I think in terms of the narrative content, this is appropriate for many 4 year olds. There is some optional cartoon style violence and how the heroes tackle the major problem is largely up to them (with some obvious clues/hints for the DM to dole out).

In terms of playing the game itself (the dice mechanics, character abilities, etc.) I've seen kids of all ages react incredibly differently. If I had to give any general advice for particularly young players, it is to not get so caught up with the rules. Rolling the dice will probably be fun for them and you can just give them the target number they are looking for. Example: "You want to climb the tree to look around? Great! Roll this one and try to get a 10 or higher."

I havent played D&D in 20 years but my 7yo son has expressed an interest in the game and I'm excited to pick it back up to play with him. One thing that is not clear to me about these is whether or not we need the 5E players handbook / DM guide to help with the rules or if all of that is included in the module.

Hey Nick!

The general 5e rules material is not reprinted in this module, and shouldn't be for any DMs Guild product. However, you don't need the actual Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, etc. to play. You can use the freely available 5e "basic rules" and run everything in this module.

There are a number of sites that host the basic rules in various formats. I use www.open5e.com a lot, but you can find the same information in lots of places by Googling '5e basic rules.'

Hope this helps!

Just ran this as a first ever game for my 6 and 7 year olds. They loved every second of it and asked immediately when the next adventure was going to be! They’re already hooked. My first time ever being DM too and I really loved it.

There's a couple of maps included with this that don't seem to have anything to do with the adventure. Should there be other magic included?
Also, the rogue's character sheet mentions a spell sheet - should this be included in the bundle?

Hey Gordon!

Thank you for picking this up and supporting Extra Life.

The maps are for Clonker's hut. The color version is also in the adventure PDF itself, but we included them separately as well for easy printing, importing into a virtual tabletop, etc.

The rogue "spell sheet" mention is a holdover from the base sheet that slipped through. Everything needed for the rogue should be there.

Hope this helps!

Hi Christopher,
The maps are called Fort Ruin and Frostshield Tower Inn - I think these are from Clonker's Guide.

By the way - the adventure is great. My kids are really enjoying it

That's really strange, those were actually for a Christmas-themed adventure I released this year. I can't begin to fathom how they would have been uploaded to this adventure instead. Even if I misclicked, I assume they would have come in as a separate .zip, not just entirely replace the An Ogre and His Cake maps.

Whatever went wrong, it should be fixed now. Please go to your library and find the file called 'An_Ogre_and_His_Cake-Maps.zip'. This should have everything you need. Sorry for the mix up!

I'm happy you're enjoying it!

I've ran this today as an introduction to D&D with three of my young brothers (8, 10 and 11 old) and they absolutely loved it! Even our 3 year old baby sister had fun just being around, rolling dice for the enemies, and commenting from time to time!

I couldn't ask for a better child introductory D&D adventure!

I wish there are more products like this!

That being said, I had to translate the adventure to my native language (Croatian), which wasn't a big deal, but I couldn't translate the character sheets entirely, because the fillable PDFs are fillable only on certain sections. Here's an image preview of a Human Fighter: https://i.imgur.com/6y9XNot.png

So, the creators, is it maybe possible if you can include completely editable character sheets, or maybe point me in the right direction of how can I edit the blank PDFs? Which software have you used to make the sheets, or anything useful at all? :)

Cheers, and thanks again for this amazing...See more

Hey Matthew! Thanks for your continued interest in An Ogre and His Cake.

We shifted gears a little bit and instead of a true sequel, we are launching a collaborative project where a lot of fine Guild creators are producing family-friendly content. Clonker will have his own commentary on each adventure.

We just launched the project today, actually, so don't expect it anytime *too* soon, but the wheels are turning!

I ran this with my three nieces ages 8, 11, 12 last weekend. It was the first D&D experience for the 8 & 11 year old and it made a great introduction for them! There are a lot of options for interactions in the module, I didn't use all of them but was able to modify them appropriate to our time and experience level. I printed some pictures of baby creatures for the menagerie such as owlbears and griffons and had them roll for the creature reactions to feeding and petting which they got a kick out of. And now these three young magic users have an NPC ogre friend who they might invite on a future adventure to provide a little muscle to back them up! Great job on this content, would love to see more like it.

I really don't like products designed to 'talk down' to kids, like they're somehow lesser. I play tested my brother's DND campaign material at 8 years old, playing stuff written for a much older age group. And the whole reason I so quickly fell in love with it was that it felt so real and (for want of a better word) adult, not dumbed down. So I really don't see the point in a product like this-I'm sure it is great, but equally sure it is misguided. A real world with real stakes and freedom is what children want, not this.

Do you have children? My daughter's face lit up when she met a pair of fairies in this adventure, and the tone, length, and setting of the adventure were all right up her alley. For her at least, and for me as a parent, both the execution and the intent were perfect. I never felt like the adventure 'talked down' to her; it appealed to her tastes.

Also, I think comparing an adventure like this to a homebrew campaign or a campaign setting book is inherently flawed. I've DM'd a campaign for my daughter and other kids (all below age 10), and we do play in a world with "real stakes and freedom." This is more accurately compared to a one-shot or an Adventurer's League module. It could certainly be expanded into a full campaign with all of the grown-up decision making that we all enjoy in D&D.

I don't understand why you'd be pessimistic about something designed to be more kid-friendly? I'm about to use this to get my 5 year old into gaming. It's not about "dumbing down", but it IS about bringing things to his level. He's 5. He's not going to play D&D like I do, or even like older kids do. Cynicism is really unnecessary. If a particular module can help get more kids into the game, how can it be a bad thing???

Wow, have you heard of terms like ‘Parentified’ for example? The notion that kids are still building up their mental faculties and still haven’t fully develop to understand like how we adults do. Kids just needs time to grow up in their own terms, and this module is perfect for them.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
