Temple of the Mad Dragon Priestess

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Blackstone Cave was once a smugglers’ lair, but it was cleared out decades ago. Now there are strange noises coming from the cave, and local authorities are afraid smugglers and bandits have taken up operations again.  What will the adventurers find? More importantly, will they be able to survive the machinations of the Mad Dragon Priestess?

Temple of the Mad Dragon Priestess is a two to six hour adventure for first level characters. It is a straightforward dungeon-crawl with exploration, traps, combat, and opportunities for role-playing. The module includes 15 pages detailing Blackstone Cave and the enemies within, full stat blocks for the boss and her lieutenant, and two maps of the lair and the temple below.

This was the first adventure I ran as a DM and it was a lot of fun. Easy to pick up and my friends enjoyed it! I recreated a colored version of the maps, would it be acceptable to share them here in case others might want to use them?

I'm so glad you liked it! I wrote it specifically to introduce a friend of mine to the game -who then didn't get to play :(
I think it's awesome that you colorized the maps! Send me an e-mail @ JeanNadira@protonmail.com and we can talk more in depth about that. :)

They're wonderful. I'm sorry it's take so long to answer - I have been very busy with real life. That will continue for the next couple of months. O.O

Ran this as my second foray into DMing for a mostly-new group. It was really fun! The details like the crudely-carved dragons decorating the rooms and the Kobolds taking baths were fantastic.
My party loved the cave/complex so much they made it their permanent residence for down time between campaigns, so thank you for including the fantastic maps.

Ran this as a one-shot for some friends as their first foray into D&D. They loved it immensely. Great little dungeon!

No, you didn't miss anything. I had 4 players in mind when I wrote it, and I award XP for traps, RP, and other non-combat things. Honestly, the encounters are a little weak. I was trying to be careful because kobolds have Pack Tactics which can be devastating. You could throw some more kobolds into the mix, some tougher kobolds, or even something like a rat swarm. Wish I had thought of that soomer... A rat swarm in the pantry.

Dang I just did the math. For a party of 6 to level up they will need to encounter 72 kobolds. O.O or 54 kobolds and the wyrmling. That's a lot more than I intended. They are definitely going to need a long rest. Or two.

I am REALLY excited to run this in 2 weeks! I'm working on early prep today, and I'm a little confused by the red "T" on the map. I have been looking, but can't seem to find a reference to them in the module. Is there something I'm missing? To what are the T's referring to? Please help!

The Ts stand for Trap. The description for each of the traps is in the room's text block.

Nicholas is correct, the "T" is for Trap. My apologies for the confusion.
*makes a mental note to add a Key to the map*

Thank you for buying the adventure! I hope you enjoy it. I would love to hear about your session, too. I've run it twice, and neither time did my players do what I expected/intended for the module. LOL

Thank you so much! And I can't wait! The ability for the unintended/unexpected to happen is what drew me to this module in the first place!! I will let you know how it goes!

Would this be good for a new DM to run?

That was the idea when I wrote it. Easy on the DM, easy on the players. That being said, I was *not* a new DM and so probably took things for granted. I recommend reading through it and adding notes where you need them.

I use Tabletop Audio. He has a *ton* of ambience + music clips. Or you can use the Soundpad and create your own mix of sounds and music. Tabletopaudio.com
Have fun!

I am running this adventure for some first-timers tomorrow and while reading through I couldn't find any reference to the door from (8b) Narida’s Bedroom to the tunnel to (E) The Wyrmling Den. Am I just missing it or is it missing from the pdf?

You are quite correct. There is no mention of the secret door that leads from Narida's bedroom to the tunnel. Oops. O.O
I didn't intend for the door to be locked or trapped, but feel free to add those! I set the DC for finding the various secret doors at 15.
Thank you for pointing that out, and a big thank you for buying the adventure! I really hope you all enjoy it. :)

I just purchased this adventure and I am excited to take a few people that are new to D&D through it. Could you send me the maps without the labels in it. We have a table built that has a monitor inset into it that we are going to put the maps on so we can use miniatures on the grid. Thank you in advance!

First, thank you for purchasing "Temple of the Mad Dragon Priestess". I had a lot of fun writing it (and running it) and I hope you and your group enjoy it! I have uploaded maps without the labels. I don't know how to disguise the secret tunnels, but I removed the "S" symbols. I hope they work well; please let me know how they look!

Running this campaign tomorrow. Excited to try it but wondering if there is a map you could load that doesn't have the Traps and Secrets noted on it? Not sure how to hide that from my players (loading them into Roll20).
Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
