Rats of Waterdeep

Solve a brutal crime on the mean streets of Waterdeep in this madcap companion adventure for Xanathar's Guide to Everything!

This adventure was brought to you by D&D Adventurers League admin Lysa Chen and Tomb of Annihilation author Will Doyle, as part of the Guild Adepts program. The product also includes new player options and NPC villains for your campaigns.

Inside, you'll find:

  •  A thrilling murder mystery balanced for five 1st-level characters, with guidelines for scaling the adventure up to APL 4. The adventure is playable in 4-6 hours.

  • Two new NPC villains: the Rat King and the Plague Druid.

  • Three new player options: the Detective background, the Rat King archetype for rangers, and the Circle of Plagues archetype for druids.

This product is now legal for play in the D&D Adventurers League, and has the following adventure code: DDHC-XGE-01.

PLEASE NOTE that the two class archetypes in "Appendix A" are NOT legal for use in Organized Play. You can use the Detective background.

Version 1.2 notes: Fixed an incorrect spell listing on the Circle of Plagues archetype, and revised the newspaper handout.

I was wondering. The fill in the blank security questions were fun for my players, but they guessed at grapes. Was there supposed to be some sort of clue in the module to help players realize this? Maybe in the icebox in the Captain's Apartment? I did also notice that even three thugs was quite the challenge for an APL 1 party. Was that intentional right at the beginning of the module? I enjoyed the adventure immensely and so did my players, both online and at my FLGS. I added a little more Waterdeep flavor to prime players for season 8, but the module alone provides just enough to get their appetites sated! Thank you!

Is it safe to assume that the Circle of Plagues's Rite of Rebirth ability is intended to reset after a long rest? Also, is it supposed to combo so well with a bag of chickens?

Hi Jasmine! No, for simplicity's sake, Rite of Rebirth is an ongoing thing. Comboing with the bag of chickens is a good catch though: I'll change this to "enemy" rather than "living creature" in the next update.

Better include language about the creature posing a threat to you or your allies, then. "Enemy" is pretty vague!

Will it be legal for DnD Adventurer's League one day? I adore investigation, esp. urban ones and I hoped for a long time that an adventure like this will be released! A pity I can't play it in Adventurer's League though :(

Hi Ekaterina! All Guild Adept content is considered for AL approval, but it can take time. In this case, I can safely say that the subclasses won't ever be available, but the adventure could be one day.

In the meantime, I humbly recommend you check out my adventure "Cloaks and Shadows" if you haven't already! It's an urban investigation that in some ways inspired this one.

oh I will wait for approval and yeah, I've played and DMed "Cloaks and Shadows" for about 5 times :) I think it is the best adventure ever written and I'm a bit sad cause I can't find anything with such a great plot! Thank you for that adventure very much!!! :)

This was just in an email announcing that it was now legal for AL play with one caveat:

Note: Nothing from Appendix A, with the exception of the Detective Background, is legal for D&D Adventurers League play.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
