Editorial

Welcome to the first volume of Dungeon Tales!

I was prompted to create this anthology, at least in part, by a lament I overheard on Facebook recently. One gamer informed another that it was impossible to find excellent adventures on the DMs Guild as there are too many titles and the quality varies too much.

I sympathise with this perspective. At the time of writing, there are over 1,600 community created adventures on the Guild. For the busy DM seeking an adventure for a quick session, the options are bewildering. Yes, the rating system is helpful, but most products don’t receive nearly enough ratings for them to provide a reliable guide.

I hope this series will go a long way toward solving this problem. We intend to create anthologies of high-quality adventures and bring them to you at an attractive price. That is our mission statement. Along the way, we will introduce you to some deeply talented new writers (you can see their other works by clicking their names in the Author section above).

What sort of adventures will they be? We want to highlight overlooked gems, by which I mean adventures which did not get the attention or sales they deserved upon release. For this reason, we plan to only include adventures that have not been anthologised before, and that have achieved, at most, a copper bestseller medal. And, if it is not already clear, we will only be including adventures that have already been published on the DMs Guild.

We prefer short adventures over long ones, and adventures with scaling information over adventures written for a single level. A neat layout and good editing are essential—if an adventure looks and reads like a mess, it won't be part of this series. Oh, and even though this is called "Dungeon Tales", we also welcome city, wilderness, and planar adventures!

If you are an adventure writer and would like to be considered for inclusion in an upcoming volume, please email a complimentary copy of your adventure to newdungeonadventures@gmail.com. We are especially keen to include stories from diverse voices. Remember, it must already be published on the DMs Guild.

The cover we’ve selected is an homage to the old Dungeon Adventures magazine. Like many people, I have very fond memories of that publication. If this new series can bring people a fraction of the joy that Dungeon Adventures did, I’ll be well pleased with our efforts.

Do you have any pictures of the Hardcover book? As nice as it is to have the PDF's, I personally still like to have physical books.
This is definitely going in my wishlist!

Yes, they are 5e adventures. I don't know much about FG, so I can't comment on your second question.

Dan S. I have not read any of these adventures, but if you know Fantasy Grounds this would not be hard to add the adventures. The hardest part would be adding each adventure to Fantasy Grounds because it would take time.

He is a link that would help you to convert an adventure to Fantasy Grounds.

Are the "Dungeon Tales #1" adventures individually added to your account?

In other words, if one of the adventures are updated down the line, could I just go to the product page for that particular adventure and it'd count as me owning it?

Or are the PDFs for this bundle considered separate, and the authors have to remember to keep them up to date?

They're separate PDFs; I can only speak personally when I say I'll be sure to provide fresh PDFs for any future updates I make.

I would think that you'd have to go to the product page of each of the included adventures to see previews, after all this is an anthology of them, and doesn't add new content, only collates the adventures.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
