Spells from Elsewhere

ADD TO WISHLIST >

UPDATE: "Spells from Elsewhere" is now version 1.13 as of 9/20/2020!  The long-promised (and hopefully awaited) update is at last here.  The changes are too numerous to list, but they include: the artificer spell list, rewording for clarification, spacing for ease of reading, errata (both for power level and for flavor reasons), trimming a bit of fluff, two new pieces of art, tables where there should be tables, a rework of the layout of the two monster stat blocks to match later publications (like "Little Monsters" and "Spells from the Far Realm"), two new sidebars, and just a host of little changes that should make the whole thing a bit more smooth. Now, back to the original description.

If you seek the strange,

the fantastic,

the phantasmagoric,

and the puzzling,

you have chosen wisely.

Spells from Elsewhere is a spell supplement designed to spice up your D&D 5th Edition roleplaying with an array of otherworldly spellcraft.  If you have ever wondered what magic is wrought upon other planes or worlds, this product gives a glimpse into many possible exotic locations while still maintaining a "generic" enough feel to be at home in an established setting, including Ravenloft or Toril.

The spells found herein are alien enough to elicit gasps, giggles, and grumbles from even the most veteran players.  Added to this is the fact that these spells are NOT converted from some past D&D book: these are 101 brand-new, never-before-seen spells (and two creatures) concocted by myself (Lord Rumfish), as well as a few of my playtesters.  Inspiration may be found here too, or just entertainment; mayhap even some staple effects may be found here that one would suppose ought to exist elsewhere, yet somehow do not.

Enter the myriad worlds and planes beyond for a taste of sensational spellcraft... if you dare.

Hello, a big update is in the works! I'm going back through to improve clarity, readability, wording, and in a few cases adding errata. I'm putting the monsters into the block format I used for "Little Monsters," which is much closer to standard layout. There might even be a couple of pieces of new artwork or sidebars! Most of the book will still work for "Rules As Intended" from the original version, but the intention should be easier to discern with what is written now.

Oh, and of course I will be adding an artificer spell list.

Anyway, to the 3 people who will end up reading this comment, rock on and know that "Spells from Elsewhere" will continue to grow and improve as 5e does.

This looks like an interesting product, but it looks like you indicated you would upload a revision to address some concerns of prior buyers. But, the product profile indicates that the product's current version was the original version. Any time frame on uploading a revised version?

Now that I've finished "Spells from the Far Realm," I'm ready to go back through and do some updates. "Mind Magic," "Time Magic," and "Mortality Magic" have been updated with the artificer spell list, for instance, and those didn't take long.

"Spells from Elsewhere" is getting a more substantive overhaul (readability, minor bits of errata, layout), which I was planning to complete after I finish "Matter Magic" and "Elemental Magic" ("Ritual Magic" is already up-to-date with artificer).

"Spells from Baldur's Gate" will be after "Spells from Elsewhere," and that should bring everything up to date.

There are neat ideas in here though they could use some balancing. The cantrips have some pretty strong effects compared to official ones.

I'm guessing you're not talking about the damage cantrips? I appreciate the feedback, in any case.

Peter, check out the latest update. I scaled back Dreaded Silence to 1d10 damage, and immunity to being deafened now stops it.

Some of the other cantrips read more powerful than they are. For instance, Mana Drain looks really cool, but most characters in combat against a spellcaster don't want to nibble away at their low-level spells, they power them down with damage. You could use it among allies to pile all your eggs into one spellcaster's basket, but for what purpose I don't know (it seems more useful to leave those spells spread out among multiple people for action economy).

Spiteful Strike is a lot of damage, but I have yet to see a player character brave (or foolhardy) enough to build around it in order to take it. I've given it to some cultists before, but they usually die before they run out of spell slots for Inflict Wounds.

Accursed Strength is neat, but something to build around. If you can regularly pass a DC 15 Constitution save, you can have a sort-of Rage...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
