CCC-GEL-01 Bedlam at the Benefit

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Some heroes raid dungeons. Some heroes slay dragons. And some heroes raise money for children’s hospitals. Everything is going splendidly for the fundraising gala at the Moonsea Children’s Hospital – until an uninvited guest and his aberrant entourage crash the party!

A two-hour adventure for 1st-4th level characters.

An entertaining adventure that brings together many NPCs from the Moonsea Region. With equal focus on Social, Combat and Exploration encounters, this adventure steers away from the typical 'hack-and-slash' dungeon.

This module was written for a convention centered around the Extra-Life Charity.  As such, all  proceeds will also be donated to the charity.

Absolutely fantastic! Ran it yesterday and it's one of, if not the best, of the many AL modules I've used. The players loved it, it was easy to prep, and there's something for everyone. The first section, a social pillar roleplaying challenge, was so much fun that several of the players said they'd have been happy to do that for another hour! Since this was a 4-hour block at a con I had to wrap it up and move on. But I will definitely be cribbing from that section for my home game.

My only warning - the boss fight can be tough, really tough, if the party doesn't do well on the skill challenge leading into it. Kinda like a college drinking game - failure leads to more failure and a TPK death spiral might result. Be sure to tune to the party's size and APL, and give some thought to how you use those lair actions.

Any tips on balancing the final fight?
Just ran it with 3 lvl 3 characters and it almost was a TPK.
Is it advised for the players to take a long rest? (storywise that doesn't make a lot of sense)
They had a successful exploration with some failures.
The lair action, creating aberrations every round is too powerful it seems to me. The players get overrun by the 4th turn or so.

He can't use the same lair action two rounds in a row, so it's only every other round, if that helps.

Wait did I read this wrong? From my interpretation if he chooses to create an abomination he has to pick one of the two and can't pick the same one 2 rounds in a row? But he can still pick one every round?
Also, don't he mouthers have a ton of HP to chew through?

Just played this, and it was fun. Does anyone know if the magic item is actually a permanent magic item. My DM seemed to think it had been errata’d as a non-permanent magic Item. The player handout says permanent. It’s a common magic item from Xanathar’s Guide to Everything.

Permanent just means not consumable, i.e. not a potion, scroll, or ammunition. The item is a permanent magic item. It just doesn't count toward your permanent magic item count.

Reading through this, it seems like a great adventure. 15 guests, each with their own quarter-page description of the character and nuances/challenges for when the players hit them up.

Both of the encounters look like they are elaborate enough to really require minis/maps, which isn't necessarily true of all AL encounters. Also, with 15 guests, and elaborate encounters, this looks like it can intentionally (or unintentionally) be stretched out to 3-4 hours.

With 4 or 5 players it can definitely fit into a 2-hour slot, although like you say, it could easily be stretched if desired.

With 6-7 players, though, you're definitely looking at a little over 3 hours unless they skip some interactions in order to 'Assist' their teammates, therefore cutting down the amount of guests they ultimately interact with.

So I actually ran it finally. Yes, it is probably too long. I don't see how the last fight is supposed to be a quick 20 minutes. You pretty much have to use a battle map, and a boss that can summon 2d4 minions or teleport each round is a recipe for it going long.

Yes....Normally if you see anything w/ the CCC code you know that it is Con Created Content specifically sanctioned by AL. The next 3 letters are a code for the Con it was created for.

The PDF appears to lack bookmarks. Would it be possible for them to be added?

As one of the editors of this module, I have to say it is one of the most creative modules I have ever seen. Waffles has used some extremely innovative social and exploritory interactions to tell a great story. I look forward to collaborating with him on many more adventures.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
