Solo Adventure Bundle 1 (Fantasy Grounds)

5e Solo Gamebooks presents Tyrant of Zhentil Keep by Paul Bimler, a 160+ page solo adventure for Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition. This adventure is designed for one 3rd-level PC of any race or class, without a DM. Tyrant of Zhentil Keep continues the narrative of The Death Knight’s Squire (the first solo adventure in this series) but can be played as a standalone also. It follows the story of your PC as they continue their journey across Faerun, a lone adventurer wandering wherever the wind takes them. Eventually, it takes them to Zhentil Keep in the Moonsea Region, a strange city, full of secrets. There they begin a quest which takes place over two books, this being the first one, part 2 being Citadel of the Raven (scheduled for release early 2018).

Tyrant of Zhentil Keep is a mini-sandbox in gamebook form, with multiple sidequests and locations to explore. Everything leads towards a central story arc that becomes clearer as the book progresses. Where Death Knight’s Squire had a clear-cut mission at its core, this adventure is pure exploration at first, similar to how a game with a Dungeon Master might commence. The nature of your quest becomes clearer as you advance, collecting snippets of information and encountering various NPCs and locations. The adventure builds upon The Death Knight's Squire in several ways, introducing new combat sheets and sidequests!

Gamebook News called The Death Knight’s Squire “An exciting new interactive format for lovers of fantasy gamebooks and roleplaying.”

PRAISE FOR 5E SOLO GAMEBOOKS:

I ran through this last night… it was a ton of fun!

Allen D.

The writing (superb), maps, and overall presentation are excellent… for me, any future chapters/modules will be an automatic buy.

Tim C.

It was challenging at points, which as a player of D&D I was looking for… its replayability is great though.

Matthew M.

PRAISE FOR TYRANT OF ZHENTIL KEEP:

Tyrant of Zhentil Keep is a fun choose-your-own 5e adventure with tons of variety. As soon as I was finished, I wanted to go through it again to see what I’d missed.

Kristina Chun

There’s something here for everyone. Every class, every playstyle. And you literally can’t do it all in one go. This book provides so many thrilling encounters and intriguing stories that it demands that you replay again and again.

Shayne Rodrigues

Tyrant of Zhentil Keep is part one of a two-part quest, however, it is playable as a stand-alone adventure. It can be played as DM + 1, DM +2, dual PC scenario without a DM, and there are rules included for running it as such, and ideas for converting it to a full campaign.

At just under 500 entries, the adventure has numerous possible routes, ensuring high replayability. This is something that has come back repeatedly during playtesting. There are multiple sidequests and encounters throughout the adventure. There are even audio files embedded in the pdf which provide sound fx and ambient backgrounds relevant to the area you are adventuring through!

What really sets this module apart, however, is that it only needs the addition of you, the player, for fun to commence. So what are you waiting for? Pick this bad boy up and get D&Ding now!

And keep an eye out for Citadel of the Raven, part 2 of the quest, scheduled for release earl 2018. Please follow 5E Solo Gamebooks if you wish to stay informed of new releases.

Attention Non Fantasy Grounds users!

Ever wanted to TRY Fantasy Grounds?  This adventure is fully compatible with the DEMO version of Fantasy Grounds!  Just go to fantasygrounds.com, download the DEMO, and load this up!

I HIGHLY suggest you read the tutorial and play the example campaign (it's a couple of encounters).

Then you'll be ready!  Enjoy!

Would it be better to purchase the PDF, or use Fantasy Grounds? I don’t know what FG is or how it works, but sounds like it might be easier to do a solo adventure on than a confusing PDF maybe? I’ve never done a solo adventure but I have been playing D&D since I was a kid. What is the best way for a first timer to use solo books?

It just depends on your preference. Fantasy Grounds is really cool. You should watch a few YouTube videos. You can even watch me play this on the video at the bottom om this page.

I purchased the pdf and the one detail I see no reference too is experience gained from encounters etc. I am missing some obvious reference to it somewhere? The only other item I would say about it, after finishing the module is an abundance of magic items. Might be because I am used to magic items being more rare. But I feel like my character is swimming in it.

The writing is welldone and I have enjoyed the story, as it brings back many memories of past novels and older documentation from older rule sets.

Hi Robert. This is the FANTASY GROUNDS MODULE sales page, not the PDF. Those comments would be directed to the author on the PDF page more appropriately.

Played every module so far. Found the occasional missing or inaccurate link, but perhaps 2 or 3 in total across all of the modules, and I don't have notes (sorry, I know that is no help). Definitely fun, worth the purchase, and fits the bill when you are not in a regular group and want to play. Looking forward to the next release.

Anyone experience FG dragging a bit after starting through the adventure? It still works just that the dice roll real slow and stutter a bit. I close down some of the open windows but still drags. Not a big deal but if I can do something about it, I would like to know.

Just finished my first combat in this book, very intense and went down to the wire just like my first combat in the first book. I need to brush up on my 5e combat skills and find my 5e DMG which I know I have (I am more of a B/X guy). I may also need to chug another healing potion before I head out again and help out some more people. Fantasy Grounds is an excellent way to work through a manual solo adventure, I would probably skip it otherwise. I play a cautious gnome rogue and the choices given allow me to do that quite well, I would have a different experience if I played an in your face paladin or power hungry wizard.

Very well written, but it was very short with only one encounter. Perhaps - I am just making the right choices or the link I clicked took me to something else? I am going to replay now, I included (below in the discussion) two areas that I believe need to be fixed. Surprised how fast I played through this - will try again.

Fix

On 207 - I receive a ring with a crest "Knights of Myth Drannor" (add to inventory) - I am unable to find a ring labeled in ITEMS. - perhaps add a link to the text? Or labeled properly in the items list?

Currently Playing - small fix.

On 427 - there is a note that if I read the note go to 443, but there is NO button to click to it (meaning you have to search for it in the story) - so a button should be added.
On 443 - it says to click on 3xx but that takes you back BEFORE 427, it should return you to 427.

I found it going through the story. Just a note for a fix.

Note: This is even better than TDKS - really enjoying it.

Just finished TDKS and want to bring my character into this adventure. I was wondering, your thoughts on bringing two characters, rather than one?

Had played the pdf version of death knight which led me to the tyrant pdf, which I ended up getting in a mess with. Decided to buy fantasy grounds at a reduced price and the vtt version of tyrant, I prefer the vtt version. It has a very enjoyable immersive feeling. Also I seem to be learning more about the mechanics of D&D. Will continue with the series on vtt. Excellent story.

Hey Greg. If it's technical (i.e. Fantasy Grounds error) you can email me at rob DOT twohy AT gmail DOT com. If it is STORY related, that will need to go to the author. Email me either way.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
